Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – November 16, 2020

If there’s one place where the news isn’t all bad, it’s the stock market. True to their nature, stock markets are always focused on the future, and the record highs being notched and funds flowing back into highly beaten-down names signal a view of the world that says things are likely to improve. For DIY investors, especially Canadian ones, the news continues to improve – at least for most.

In this edition of the Roundup, we take a look at a recent trading outage that negatively impacted investors trying to cash in on another historic trading day and examine how online brokers can set the record straight on system stability. Next, we review the gift that keeps on giving – deals and promotions – as more Canadian online brokerages jump into the deals race to make for an exciting run-up to RRSP season. As always, we have interesting perspectives to share from DIY investors, including forum commentary and real-time reactions to trading highs and lows on Twitter.

Volume Challenges Online Brokerages’ Trading Systems Yet Again

There’s no denying money is an emotional subject. Layer in fast-moving markets, fleeting opportunities, significant expectations about reliability, relatively high commission pricing, and online trading screeching to a halt, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for some serious online brokerage “haterade.”

This past week was déjà vu all over again when stock markets moved substantially higher on the news of the vaccine from Pfizer and the prospect of a clear winner to the US presidential election. The heightened enthusiasm, however, ended up translating into a surge of trading volume on stock exchanges across North America and, sadly, some online brokerage systems were unprepared for the volume.

In the US and in Canada, several noteworthy online brokerages suffered trading outages at the worst possible moment, leaving many investors angry and sidelined from making (or saving) considerable money. TD Ameritrade, Schwab, and Fidelity were among the big names in the US online brokerage space that were reporting issues with users being able to access their online trading accounts on Monday.

In Canada, some DIY investors were also greeted with a bad case of the Mondays. According to reports from users on Twitter, Questrade and Scotia iTrade suffered outages that impacted traders on Monday morning, sending users into a fury that made for some disconcerting reading on Twitter.  

Massive volatility in stock markets is not something new, and, in fact, it is something many online brokerages had already been bracing for in the lead-up to the US presidential election. For DIY investors, however, it is understandably frustrating, perhaps infuriating, when online brokerages go offline or have technical issues because of increased trading activity.

Interestingly, only one online brokerage in Canada, Wealthsimple Trade, has taken it upon themselves to proactively report and disclose issues regarding their trading systems on a separate, dedicated website. By automating this disclosure, it provides some measure of access to situations where trading systems are impacted – so users aren’t completely in the dark about what’s going on. More impactful, however, by making this disclosure public, DIY investors can also see for themselves just how “reliable” the trading system is.

For example, from September through November 15th, Wealthsimple Trade reports their trading system was up 99.89% of the time – something users can verify for themselves. It is worth noting that there were no outages reported on their systems status page on November 9th, the date that other online brokerage systems went down.

Going forward, investor patience for outages that take place at online brokerages will be very limited. The fact that “new kid on the block” Wealthsimple Trade can do so almost begs the question as to why other, larger, better-resourced firms that are competing with Wealthsimple Trade haven’t or won’t disclose this data. Seems fitting for a challenger brand.

That said, the majority of online brokerages are likely up and running without issue for most of the year. Having a site that objectively reports this uptime profile is much more likely to communicate what reality is versus what the subjective and emotional impressions are of the reliability of a platform. If an online investor is doing their homework into the stability and reliability of an online brokerage (and those burned by outages before likely will), then it seems like a bad idea to have the only record of system function be the trail of angry tweets that inevitably highlight when things go wrong instead of a site that communicates how often they got it right.

Big Deals Keep on Turning

If there’s one thing November can lock in its reputation for, it’s ushering in deals and promotions. From Singles’ Day to Black Friday, millions of shoppers around the world look forward to this month to get access to savings, and so too do Canadian DIY investors.

This past week saw three more offers come to market. Two of those promotions came from big bank-owned online brokerages, RBC Direct Investing and Scotia iTrade, which launched a commission-free trade and a combo, cash-back and commission-free trade deal, respectively. The third offer, courtesy of Virtual Brokers, was a discounted commission offer.

Compared to earlier this year, when Questrade was the sole online broker in Canada offering up promotions for new accounts, the sharp increase in promotions this month alone is cause for optimism for DIY investors who are interested in opening an online trading account.

Looking more closely at the new deals to cross the wire, the RBC Direct Investing commission-free trade offer is more of a “classic” than a new offer. They are bringing back a popular offer they have had for a few years that consists of 25 commission-free equity trades that are valid to use for up to a year from the time of account opening. The perks of this offer are the low threshold to qualify, a deposit of $5,000, and the long timeframe in which to use these commission-free trades. At a standard commission rate of $9.95, the equivalent value of the offer is just shy of $250.

By comparison, Scotia iTrade also leaned into a familiar strategy in offering up the choice to investors of accessing either a cash-back promotion or commission-free trades. The combined nature of this offer makes it one of the more interesting promotions currently in play among Canadian online brokerages. To further enhance the value, the discounted commission rate of $6.99 per trade equates to a 30% discount on the standard commission fee until June 30, 2021.

To see how the Scotia iTrade offer truly stacks up, however, it is worth comparing it to the other cash-back promotions currently in play.

The first thing that jumps out about the cash-back offer from Scotia iTrade is that the minimum deposit threshold is lower than that of any of their peers. At $5,000 to qualify for a $25 cash-back bonus, there are no other offers in this range that would compete.

As we reviewed last week, there are certain deposit tiers that it is clear online brokerages appear to be most interested in targeting. In the case of Scotia iTrade, the segment where they (and they alone) have the highest offer is between $250K and $500K, with an offer of $750 cash-back. Their cash-back offer is also tied for top spot at the $50K deposit level with CIBC Investor’s Edge, with both of these online brokers offering $200. Similarly, Scotia iTrade is in a three-way tie for top offer of $1,000 cash-back at the $500K to $1M deposit range.

When it comes to the commission-free trade comparison picture, however, Scotia iTrade’s promotion is unique in that it is the only online brokerage (at the moment) to use tiered deposits to qualify for higher quantities of commission-free trades. And, beyond deposits of $100K, it is the only online brokerage offering commission-free trades of greater than 100 trades. That said, currently National Bank Direct Brokerage has, hands down, the highest commission-free trade offer, with 100 trades and no deposit minimum required to qualify.

Of the offers that have come to market thus far, Scotia iTrade is the most versatile of the bank-owned brokerages. It spans the widest range of deposit tiers, from $5K through to $1M+. It has a combined discounted commission and cash-back or commission-free trade offering. And, the bonus offers can be combined with their existing referral program, which means that there is an opportunity for extra cash-back or free trades to be added onto either of the base-free-trade or cash-back promotion offers.

Finally, a different category of deal that was launched this month was from Virtual Brokers. This offer waives the minimum spend per trade of $1.99, which is a part of the standard commission price structure. Interestingly, this offer does not apply to odd-lot trades – defined specifically by Virtual Brokers according to the price of the security. Also, this offer is available only until the end of December 2020, and in order to maximize savings from this offer, investors would likely be trading securities priced at $1 or more (likely significantly higher than $1).

As predicted, November has been a watershed month for DIY investors looking for a deal to open a new online investing or trading account. With market volatility likely to stay elevated (if last week is any indication), there will undoubtedly be interest from investors who are still on the sidelines or who are contemplating other account types (or moving online brokerages) to kick the tires on these offers. There are still a handful of online brokerages that have yet to jump into the deals pool, but we anticipate there to be at least one or two more offers coming to market before November ends.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – November 2020

*Update: November 27* Daylight isn’t the only thing being saved this as we enter the month of November. It seems like DIY investors are also in for some savings too.

Like adjusting the clocks back, it’s going to take some getting used to online investing in November. With the US presidential election likely to shape the rest of the month, online brokers and investors alike are uncertain as to what the fallout will be.

Heading into a new month there is a mixed picture for promotional offers. On a down note, the 60-day commission-free trade offer from HSBC InvestDirect concluded at the end of October. On the plus side, however, Questrade rolled back the clock on inactivity fees, taking them back to zero. While technically not a promotion, it is a piece of good news for DIY investors looking to park their money without penalty.

Another bit of good news for DIY investors is November is historically a big month for online brokerage offers coming to market. We expect that several big names will be launching new offers in anticipation of RRSP season and the heightened activity around TFSAs and markets heading into the end of the year.

So, don’t forget to check back throughout the month for any updates. The US election is expected to heavily impact investor behaviour and in turn, the discount brokerage space. Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – October 12, 2020

As much as turkey and mashed potatoes are a staple of the menu for many Canadians on Thanksgiving, so too is discussion of what’s happening in the world. Inevitably for DIY investors, the gravy comes in the form of what’s been hot and what others are looking at in terms of potential money-making ideas. During COVID, however, the gatherings are likely (or should be!) smaller, and that might make for less banter about what folks are trading (not including recipes for turkey). Nonetheless, this month, despite the dour news, some Canadian discount brokers are giving DIY investors reasons to be optimistic for the remaining few months in 2020.

In this short-week edition of the Roundup, we highlight a new twist on a story of inactivity fees at one Canadian online brokerage that will be sure to get DIY investors chatting as news spreads. Following that, we review some of the latest activities taking place during Investor Education Month, including World Investor Week, and who is (and isn’t) showing up in the Canadian online brokerage space. Despite the short week, we’ve served up a healthy portion of DIY investor chatter from Twitter and the investor forums.

Questrade Eliminates Inactivity Fees

With all the big headline news swirling, it’s easy for some important news to get lost in the shuffle. In the case of Questrade, one of Canada’s most popular online brokerages, their latest move regarding inactivity fees is almost certainly going to make waves once word catches on.

The big news for DIY investors: As of October 1st, Questrade has eliminated inactivity fees on all accounts.

Yes, that’s right, the storied history of inactivity fees at Questrade has added another chapter to it, and in this case, Questrade has returned to its low-cost roots and put an end to quarterly inactivity fees.

For those who have followed the Questrade inactivity fee saga for as long as we have, there is almost no forgetting the firestorm that emerged on social media – in particular on investor forums – when Questrade first made the decision to introduce inactivity fees to clients in July 2012.

At that time, the launch of the inactivity fees was a step change in the identity and perception of the brand. Up until that point, Questrade had become a fixture in the minds of value-conscious DIY investors, and one of the reasons why – aside from the low commission rates – was the lack of inactivity fees.

Understandably, then, the first iteration of inactivity fees proposed by Questrade did not go over well. The first rollout involved charging a monthly fee of $9.95 for clients who did not make at least one commission-generating trade in the month or who had a balance of assets across all accounts of less than $5,000.

When the news of this fee change broke, the very vocal dismay of the Questrade community of clients on a popular forum on RedFlagDeals.com caused Questrade to revisit the decision and modify the terms and conditions around the inactivity fee. Aside from substantially changing the structure of the inactivity fee, they also pushed back the date of the rollout of their inactivity fee to the beginning of October 2012.

A post on RedFlagDeals.com set in motion the official response and policy on inactivity fees for Questrade for the better part of the past eight years:

Unlike many of their Canadian online brokerage peers up to that point (and arguably since), Questrade had successfully built up a strong following and audience in various online investing communities and on social media. Because of its appeal as a lower-cost option for online investors, and the propensity of investor communities to provide “helpful” suggestions to one another regarding DIY investing products/services, Questrade often stood out as a natural counterpoint to most other online brokers at the time.

Although introducing inactivity fees at Questrade brought them into line with “the rest of the pack” of Canadian discount brokers at the time, the exercise of hearing out many online investing clients’ concerns and responding with changes to Questrade’s pricing was one of the more extraordinary moments in the history of the Canadian DIY investing community.

More than anything, it showed that as a service provider, Questrade was prepared to listen to their customers and respond with changes.

At the time, there were only two other online brokerages that didn’t charge inactivity fees – Qtrade Investor and Virtual Brokers, both of whom eventually came around to launching these fees as well.

Over time, the quarterly inactivity fee at Questrade increased from $19.95 per quarter to $24.95 per quarter, and the requirement to maintain $5,000 as a minimum value of assets was reduced to $1,000.

Now, almost exactly eight years after it was launched, and even though a lot has changed about the online investing industry and commission pricing in Canada, Questrade is venturing forward with no inactivity fees. Other Canadian online brokerages, with the exception of Wealthsimple Trade, will now be forced to re-evaluate their stance on inactivity fees altogether, or at least the threshold minimums required to have them waived.

As a tactical move, heading into the coveted RSP season, Questrade is now able to claim to be one of the only Canadian online brokerages that does not charge inactivity fees with no other strings attached.

What is curious about the latest drop in inactivity fees at Questrade is that, as of the time of publication, there hasn’t (yet) been much chatter online about this move – perhaps owing to the fact that there hasn’t been too much in the way of formal communication about the change in pricing.

It is likely, however, that Questrade will be shining a spotlight on dropping the inactivity fee heading into the end of the year and that it will undoubtedly spark a conversation among DIY investors. Hopefully, said conversation will also encourage online brokerages in Canada to consider what they can do to lower the barriers for DIY investors to access markets and to take their time when learning the ropes without being penalized for “going slow.”

Investor Education Month Activities Underway

In case you missed it, October is the official month for investor education awareness in Canada. This past week it was also World Investor Week, an initiative promoted by the International Organization of Securities Commissions, or IOSCO (yes, that last O is intentional). IOSCO is an international body that “brings together the world’s securities regulators and is recognized as the global standard setter for the securities sector.”

Now in its fourth iteration, World Investor Week was “conceived to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection. The project, organized and implemented by IOSCO’s Committee 8 on Retail Investors (C8), consists of up to a week of outreach activities carried out by participating IOSCO member jurisdictions.”

A quick search of the hashtag #WorldInvestorWeek on Twitter illustrates the many international organizations that participated in last week’s event. For the most part, the messages from securities exchanges and regulators around the world reinforced the messages around prudent investing strategies. To assist with getting their core messages out, IOSCO also prepared a list of key “investing basics” messages positioned around being a “smart investor.”

On the home front, there were a few Canadian organizations that did make an appearance in support of World Investor Week, with one of the more active ones being the Ontario Securities Commission’s Investor Office via their “Get Smarter About Money” initiative.

Among Canadian discount brokerages, however, World Investor Week was largely invisible.

That said, when it comes to Investor Education Month more broadly, there was only one Canadian online brokerage that stood out: TD Direct Investing.

To their credit, TD Direct Investing has actually put together a comprehensive set of investor education activities in recognition of Investor Education Month – something that other online brokerages in Canada will want to take note of, especially if they are positioning themselves as serious about investor education. In fact, a quick look at the Twitter account for TD Direct Investing reveals that even in their description, investor education is the first thing they reference as being available.

While the spirit of promoting investor awareness and education is something all Canadian online brokerages would (likely) be on board with, it is noteworthy that only TD Direct Investing has compiled dedicated educational content for this specific month. In putting this together, TD Direct Investing has reinforced one of its strongest value offerings as an online broker that provides access to robust educational materials for DIY investors.

As many Canadian (and international) online brokerages wrestle with the reality that millions of new (or novice) investors have stepped into the world of DIY investing, it will be increasingly important for Canadian online brokers to provide resources to better inform these investors about the realities of investing online.

For the moment, TD Direct Investing has managed to take the lead among Canadian brokerages in tackling this – and given their depth of educational content, TDDI is well positioned to curate existing information that could apply to the current market uncertainty.

Looking at the social media accounts of their peers, it seems like most Canadian online brokers are taking a “wait and see” approach, or are too busy focusing on other areas to put investor education in the driver’s seat, or are simply relegated to having to watch and learn.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – August 17, 2020

It’s just past the middle of August and, wow, have things heated up all over the place. From hot weather across Canada to action in the online brokerage market, to new market highs, there’s definitely no shortage of action under way.

In this week’s Roundup, we decided to shake things up a bit and cover several of the smaller stories that have taken place among Canadian and US online brokerages this month. Think of it like the salad bar edition, where the stories are crisp, fresh and offer a healthy dose of interesting insight into the online brokerage market dynamics.

Keep reading for updates about one offer that has snapped the dry spell for online brokerage deals; good news coming for active traders using thinkorswim; how one online brokerage is making waves by launching crypto trading; and how a recent merger will present challenges to staying “on brand” for a popular Canadian discount broker. As always, we’ve collected some of the chatter from DIY investors on Twitter and in the forums.

HSBC InvestDirect Launches New Commission-Free Trade Offer

The long dry spell in the Canadian discount brokerage deals and promotions section is finally over, courtesy of an unlikely source, HSBC InvestDirect.

While this online brokerage does launch promotional offers from time to time, the bigger story here is that nearly all of Canada’s discount brokers have been on the sidelines all summer (and as far back as late spring). As such, seeing a number of larger name online brokerages (such as TD Direct Investing and Scotia iTRADE) start to advertise online lately and now HSBC InvestDirect launching a new offer signals that brokerages are positioning for the annual ramp up in activity that takes place towards the end of the year.

The offer, which officially launched on July 27th and runs until October 30th of this year, is for 60 commission-free trades of North American equities or ETFs. The deadline to use these trades is 60 days from the time of account opening. This deal is open to new and existing clients of HSBC InvestDirect.

Although most Canadian discount brokerages recognize the small market share of HSBC InvestDirect in the online brokerage space, this could work out in HSBC’s favour – at least until other online brokerages start ramping up their own advertising efforts.

For the moment, HSBC InvestDirect only has to share the spotlight with Questrade when it comes to brokerage offers. And, while HSBC InvestDirect’s commission-free trade offer is good, the bigger benefit will be online investors, who are interested in promotional offers, kicking the tires (so to speak) on the HSBC suite of services more broadly.  

Just Keep Swimming

For many, there is no better way to stay cool during the summer than with a nice dip in a pool or lake. For DIY investors who are big fans of the thinkorswim trading platform, the recent acquisition of TD Ameritrade by Charles Schwab raised some questions on what exactly the new user experience would be in the new entity.

With the acquisition now cleared from a regulatory standpoint, many investors will be watching exactly how these two titans in the online brokerage space will integrate. The length of the integration period is forecasted to take between 18 and 36 months. One of the most popular features to active traders and investors, the thinkorswim platform, is being eagerly monitored.

Earlier this month, Schwab released a statement confirming that thinkorswim (and thinkpipes), as well as the accompanying educational offerings for retail investors, will be integrated in the new Schwab experience.

For Canadian investors who like (and use) the platform, this is welcomed news. The thinkorswim platform is currently available to Canadian customers via TD Direct Investing, although approval for a US margin account is required to access it.

Wealthsimple Moves Forward on Crypto Trading

Speaking of pools and making ripples, Wealthsimple, the parent to Wealthsimple Trade, announced earlier in the summer that they were going to enter the crypto trading space and allow clients to trade Bitcoin and Ethereum.

This month, Wealthsimple provided an update on the status of their cryptotrading venture. The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) have approved Wealthsimple to join the “regulatory sandbox” which essentially provides a regulator-approved framework to test this new service. There are many interesting details from the Wealthsimple filing, however a few that piqued our interest include:

– how Wealthsimple intends to make money from crypto trading (via the spread)

– whether or not investor assets are protected (assets are not protected by CIPF nor by CDIC)

– how transactions will actually take place (closed loop system)

Timing-wise, it is an interesting move for an online brokerage to pursue trading in cryptocurrencies considering the dramatic pullback in interest compared to 2018. Clearly, the same frenzy does not exist now, but the fact that Wealthsimple Trade will be the first Canadian online brokerage to offer direct trading in cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin and Ethereum, means that the portion of the DIY investor market that is interested in these cryptocurrencies will now have a venue to do it on.

What is probably most interesting from a competitive standpoint is that many DIY investors who have been on the fence about Wealthsimple Trade might see this as the feature that they cannot access anywhere else. As such, the launch of cryptocurrency trading at Wealthsimple is as much about facilitating a way to trade these financial instruments as it is a way to try and win over new clients from other online brokers.

Given the regulatory framework under which this program is governed, and the nature of the crypto assets being traded, there will be considerable scrutiny on crypto trading at Wealthsimple. While the future of the program itself is uncertain, for the near term, this latest feature will give DIY investors (and other online brokerages) another big reason to pay attention to Wealthsimple Trade.

Staying on Brand: CI Direct Investing Continues to Take Shape

The big brand consolidation taking place at CI Financial took another big step forward this month, with the official announcement that WealthBar has officially transitioned over to CI Direct Investing.

The announcement itself was light on details other than to assure users that the investing experience won’t change. The only changes will include small (important) details, like the new website URL and the mobile app updating to the new branding. With WealthBar now taking on new branding, next on the list will be Virtual Brokers.

As announced in their Q1 2020 earnings call back in May, CI Financial will be looking to consolidate both WealthBar and Virtual Brokers under the CI Direct Investing banner. This could be an interesting moment in the online brokerage space in Canada for a number of reasons. First and foremost, Virtual Brokers, for multiple years, has earned top marks with the coveted Globe and Mail online brokerage rankings. The move to a new name will certainly stir up some degree of confusion among DIY investors; however, more than that, one of the reasons why Virtual Brokers has scored so well on the most influential online brokerage ranking in Canada is because it prioritized features that appealed heavily to younger investors and, of course, it was among the lowest-cost online brokerages in Canada.

With a new parent brand, especially one that has so much more of a premium feel to it, how Virtual Brokers transitions its ‘frugal’ roots to this new home will be interesting to watch. The decision to go with the marketing term of “direct investing”, compared to “discount brokerage” or “online brokerage,” is already a signal that CI Direct Investing would prefer to compete more directly with the bank-owned online brokerages who’ve both silently and overtly started referring to DIY investing as “direct investing.”

Of course, to help ensure that investors know who the CI Financial brand is, there will likely have to be a significant marketing campaign by CI Direct Investing to ensure investors know that this online broker exists and what kind of experience and pricing they can expect. This will be of particular interest to watch heading into the fall season, as this is typically the time of year when many online brokers release important new features.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – July 6, 2020

Whether it’s the first or fourth of July, where and how you might have celebrated depends in large part on where you happen to find yourself.

In this edition of the Roundup, we keep things short and sweet, like a great helping of soft-serve ice cream. First, we take a peek at the deals and promotions for July and see how they differ from June. Next, we scroll on over to the launch of an updated mobile app for a leading Canadian online broker. As always, there’s lots to ponder from the investor forums as well as from Twitter.

New Month, Same Deals

With the second half of 2020 now officially underway, there are lots of questions investors and online brokerages are asking as far as what the rest of the year holds for investing online. One of the biggest questions is around volatility and whether the trading volumes that were the norm in the first part of the year will continue to feature prominently into the end of 2020.

As has been covered extensively through the Weekly Roundup since March, volatility in stock markets has also pushed up trading volumes to record-breaking levels. The prevailing theory is that the combination of individuals being forced to shelter in place, the absence of sports betting, and the distribution of government support payments have all converged into a perfect storm of retail investors flooding into the market to try to take advantage of some kind of rally in heavily battered stock prices.

The knock-on effect of all of this, however, has been that interest in opening an online trading account at an online brokerage has been so strong that most Canadian online brokerages have opted to shelve their promotions for the summer. In the most important deal categories to DIY investors (cash-back or commission-free trades), Questrade has become the sole online brokerage with active promotions.

Crossing the threshold into the latter half of the year, it is hard to imagine Canadian online brokerages standing on the sidelines for much longer before jumping back into the promotions race.

First, Questrade represents an increasingly tough competitor for other Canadian discount brokerages to defend against. Whether it is in investor forums, TV commercials, or social media, there’s a good chance that new investors looking for an online brokerage are going to run into mentions or even recommendations for Questrade. By leaving Questrade unchallenged, other online brokerages are enabling this already popular brokerage to build market share and attract investors to a conversation about investing.

Second, should any of the factors that caused the rush of investors looking to set up accounts abate, discount brokerages would almost certainly have to aggressively ramp up their marketing efforts – including adding promotions. To further challenge the financial services space as a whole in Canada, several large Canadian banks have also elected to pause their advertising on Facebook. Unless Facebook remedies their enforcement of curbing hate speech, it will be a challenge for online brokers to find a way to scale up their messaging and advertising during COVID-19.

Finally, the end of the year is typically when the ramp-up to RRSP-contribution season starts. Layer in a year in which there is almost certainly going to be a good portion of tax-loss selling and realizing of capital gains, TFSA maneuvering, and more, and DIY investors will be doing a lot more with their accounts through the end of this year. Of course, in order for online investors to want to stick with their current brokerage, it means the service experience at online brokerages has to be very good, and right now, based on comments from Twitter, there aren’t a lot of good customer service stories for Canadian discount brokerages.

It’s clear that nobody can fully predict the scale and scope of how COVID-19 will unfold in Canada or the US. Tied to that uncertainty is the business need to attract new clients via marketing and incentives. As the rest of the economy in Canada starts to fire up again, and people begin to come out of isolation, so too, hopefully, will the Canadian discount brokerage deals.

Teaching an Old App New Tricks – TD Direct Investing Launches Updated App

When mobile investing apps first arrived, they were heralded as the future for individual investors to gain even more freedom when wanting to trade, whether in line at Starbucks or hanging out poolside with a drink in one hand and a phone in the other. Mobile trading was truly going to be the next “big thing” with DIY investing. Arguably, now that apps and being able to do just about everything on a mobile device have become the norm, that sentiment of trading almost entirely by mobile app is closer to the original vision.

In June, TD Direct Investing unveiled the latest updates to their mobile app, which focused on investor education. TD Direct Investing’s mobile app now provides access to their online learning centre, which is filled with content to help investors get up to speed on a number of topics related to investing.

Among the more interesting capabilities is the ability to cast video lessons directly to TV – something that could offer up that perfect balance of autoplay TV series and educational content.

Of course, TD isn’t the only one that has conducted a refresh or added features to their mobile trading app this year. Virtual Brokers and RBC Direct Investing are the others. Thus, it seems like multiple Canadian discount brokerage who haven’t yet worked on improving their current app design/build will be busy figuring out how to build a mobile app for the current world.

With summer now upon us, it is the perfect opportunity both to learn about investing and investments as well as to be out and about. The latest wave of mobile upgrades at TD Direct Investing enables users to do both.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – June 22, 2020

Summer is officially here. With warmer weather now upon us and progress – albeit slower than anyone would like – in the battle against COVID-19, it appears that there is reason for some cautious optimism. A group feeling particularly optimistic heading into the summer are Canadian discount brokerages. The combination of standard commission rates and higher trading volumes means a rising tide for the fortunes of Canada’s brokerages.

In this week’s edition of the Roundup, we hop back into the saddle after a week away and profile the interesting shift to Canadian online brokerages being candid about the numbers of investors opening accounts. From there, we focus in on the signs of change taking place at a pair of online brokers and the visual shift to become more diverse on their website. As always, we’ll close out the roundup with chatter from the investor forums and on Twitter.

Counting on Numbers: Online Brokerage Activity in the Spotlight

For Canadians, our neighbours to the south are a constant source of news and focus. In covering the online brokerage marketplace in Canada, however, the activities in the US take on an even greater significance. The US online brokerage space – and by extension the activities of retail investors that funnel trading activity through those brokerages – provides an interesting window into the trends impacting investors who choose to trade stocks online.

One of the biggest stories in the online brokerage space that we have been monitoring and reporting on since March of this year has been the spike in investor interest in participating in the stock market.

In what would normally be an environment that would “scare” investors away, the reality of the whipsawing market in hard numbers from US online brokerage shows just the opposite. The volatility in the markets has caused a surge in online investing account openings as well as record trading activity. Even though the word “unprecedented” has been tossed around a lot during the COVID-19 pandemic, the reality is that online brokerages in the US have never really seen this level of interest and activity in their history.

Which brings us to Canada. The news around trading activity among Canadian DIY investors and what that means to Canadian discount brokerages is only starting to trickle through.

Unlike their US counterparts, Canadian online brokerages are not publicly traded – at least not as a pure play, the way Interactive Brokers, Schwab, Ameritrade (which is in the process of being acquired by Schwab), and E*Trade (which is in the process of being acquired by Morgan Stanley) are. Those US online brokerages frequently and regularly comment on their performance, which includes standard key performance indicators (KPIs) on the success or health of the business. Included in those metrics is usually data on trading volume, revenue from trading, and the total number of customers, as well as new customer accounts, in any given period. Because the US online brokerages are publicly traded, they are required to disclose a lot more about their business than private companies are.

In the Canadian online brokerage marketplace, however, things are very different. Online brokers in Canada are normally coy or silent about the hard numbers regarding account openings, trading volume, and revenue generated from trading commissions. But these are not normal times, and the news cycle covering online brokerage activity among retail investors in Canada has a surprisingly high number of online brokerages disclosing information about the numbers of accounts opened and trading volumes – to a degree.

Over the past few weeks, Canadian online brokerages such as BMO InvestorLine, Questrade, Scotia iTRADE, TD Direct Investing, and Wealthsimple Trade have weighed in on the record levels of trading and account openings they have witnessed. This past week, BNN Bloomberg cited numbers from a recent Investor Economics report that showed close to 500,000 accounts were opened in the first quarter of the year here in Canada. The fact that online brokerages or BNN are talking about these numbers at all is highly unusual. However, when diving into the numbers themselves, it is also worth noting that there is no analogous disclosure mechanism in the US that would require or compel an online brokerage in Canada to reveal these numbers. In other words, it’s largely the honour system at play. The operative questions would be why – or at least why now – and what would they stand to gain by putting these numbers “out there”?

One important reason is because the traditional media is putting a spotlight on the issue, it is a great time to get additional exposure without having to dip too far into an advertising/marketing budget. Having a platform like BNN reach out to discuss the state of the markets and the retail investor angle is certainly a great way to gain exposure on a topic that is central to their business. A second reason to start flexing on numbers is to indicate to potential clients the “popularity” of the brand with online investors.

The saying in the stock market is that higher prices lead to higher prices. When it comes to sharing how many online investors call a particular brokerage home, it spotlights an important – and difficult to contest – set of attributes about a brokerage: that they are where people ultimately decide to open accounts. In a muddied world of “best online brokerage” statements, the number of actual online trading accounts that a Canadian brokerage can demonstrate can go a very long way in shaping whether investors feel confident in a particular brokerage.

The forces that have driven online investors to open up online trading accounts – namely uncertainty around the impacts of COVID-19 – are likely to be in place for some time. As such, it will still likely impact the number of newer investors coming into the markets and result in elevated trading volumes. For Canadian online brokerages, that means the forecast for online trading is bullish.

That said, for online brokerages, there is clearly a shift in strategy taking place during these market conditions. From contractions in advertising and incentive offers, to increased conversations about the industry, markets, and their own strengths and success, Canadian discount brokers are once again finding ways to distinguish themselves from one another. That is going to be even more important now that new entrants are coming into the fray and vying for investor attention.

Signs of Change

In addition to the news being heavily focused on the COVID-19 pandemic, there has also been an important focus on diversity, inclusion, and ending discrimination. In the online brokerage world, indeed in the world of financial services, one interesting angle we have observed over the years has been the visual portrayal of an investor.

Historically – and, more precisely, within the past five years – there has been a gradual shift in the way in which the Canadian online brokerage industry has started to think about what an online investor “looks like,” and by extension what that translates into on their websites.

This past week, there were two important visual developments noted at Interactive Brokers and Virtual Brokers.

In the case of Interactive Brokers, the hero image (the primary image that a user who visits a website sees) was replaced: from the iconic Wall Street – or even white male – investor to a professional-looking female. Visually, this is an important shift for Interactive Brokers, whose commercials and imagery have largely leaned into the portrayal of the target client as the active (male) trader. In fact, the images shown below compare what Interactive Brokers had on their website in April and what they have replaced it with just recently. While there is still work to do as far as capturing visual diversity – in particular, ethnic diversity – it was nonetheless commendable to see the change in visual direction, especially at the homepage level.

Another Canadian online brokerage that has taken an important visual direction change is Virtual Brokers. This past week, a new layout on the homepage appeared in which the people profiled look very different from those who were there previously. Below are images from the website (snapshots taken at the end of 2019 and this past week) that show how dramatically different the portrayal of people (DIY investors) now feels, especially in light of the conversation around diversity and inclusion.

While changes to visual imagery or website layouts are generally not something that makes the news, the conversation about being discriminated against or being biased against because of skin colour or gender is a conversation taking place right now. Whether or not the timing of these changes is coincidental or deliberate to what is going on right now with respect to greater awareness of discrimination around the world, looking at these two changes that have taken place through the lens of diversity and inclusion drives home the point that how online brokerages – especially Canadian online brokers – think about DIY investors needs to change. At the very least, leadership (and every level of the organization) should be conscientiously asking, how representative of the Canadian population’s diversity is their brand? Are they truly listening and reflecting the social fabric? Or are they perpetuating biases around who can be an investor or who can be wealthy and what they should look like?

Progress may not always happen quickly or in a straight line, but it is clear when you see it, and these days, we certainly would welcome seeing more of it.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – June 1, 2020

For anyone watching any kind of news or social media, it is difficult to fully process what is unfolding in cities around the world. With so many of us in Canada and around the world still under restrictions to stay close to home, the window to the outside world has become a digital one. Despite even greater access to technology and almost limitless amounts of information, collectively we are struggling to make sense of something so senseless.

So, although we will run this edition of the Roundup, the most important story, the one that needs to be heard, will be first. Take a moment to watch it, hear it, and let it sink in. Latest Online Brokerage Rankings Show Room for Improvement

If there’s one thing that’s synonymous with the end of the school year, it’s report cards. For Canadian discount brokers, the grades are in from a noteworthy financial services research firm and it’s clear that for many of them, improvement is needed.

Though seemingly straightforward on the surface, online brokerage reviews and rankings are challenging endeavours. So much about rating online brokers depends on how the rankings are defined and what is actually being measured, which is why it is often hard to compare different online brokerage rankings. They simply measure different things about the Canadian discount brokerage industry.

This past week, the financial services research unit of J.D. Power released their annual evaluation of the Canadian online brokerage industry with their Self-Directed Investor Satisfaction Study. Though the name and the study have changed slightly over the 12 years this evaluation has taken place, at its core, it continues to measure “investor satisfaction” and uses that to determine which Canadian discount broker is “best.”

Before diving into this year’s results, it’s worth mentioning a few points about the study itself, to better contextualize what it does (and does not) measure.

The first and probably most important factor to note is that the Investor Satisfaction Study measures just that: investor satisfaction. In this study, investor satisfaction is comprised of seven components:

  1. Account information
  2. Commissions and fees
  3. Firm interaction
  4. Information resources
  5. Investment performance
  6. Problem resolution
  7. Product or service offering

Given that investor satisfaction is somewhat of an abstract concept, it is useful to have these categories in place to help structure how to think about the ultimate question when it comes to any client experience: were clients satisfied with the product or not?

Of course, while it would be nice to get a simple “yes” or “no” answer, the reality is that these are complex concepts and there are things that brokerages do differently, perhaps better or worse than others. Further, how investors interpret things like “customer experience” may be highly subjective and as such make it a challenge to measure. Nonetheless, the scale that the Investor Satisfaction Study is built on is a numerical one that scores all brokerages out of a maximum possible 1,000 points.

With that context in mind, it was interesting to see what the 2020 version of the study uncovered in terms of Canadian DIY investor perspective. More interesting, however, was the comparison of this year’s results to the previous year’s, as it uncovers important differences and shifts in the industry that have taken place since the last time this study was conducted.

At a high level, one of the first things that stands out about the 2020 results is the drop in average investor satisfaction compared to the 2019 study. The average for the industry this year was 717, but last year it was 726 – a sign that the industry did worse when it came to investor satisfaction.

Averages, however, only convey part of the picture. What was also interesting to take note of is that the spread between scores narrowed.

Last year the difference between the best ranked online brokerage (with a score of 753) and the lowest ranked brokerage (with a score of 698) was 55 points. This year, that range dropped to 33. In fact, with the exception of 2019, since 2013 and 2014 (where the range was 64 points) the spread between “the best” and “the worst” in terms of investor satisfaction had been decreasing.

The compression of this range seems to suggest that DIY investors are finding the experience increasingly similar between Canadian online brokerages, a signal that commoditization is taking hold and that online brokerages are not doing nearly enough to differentiate or out-innovate one another.

Nowhere is this more evident in the 2020 results than in how close the top four online brokerages were from one another.

The difference between first (Questrade) and second place (BMO InvestorLine) was five points, and the difference between second (BMO InvestorLine), third (Desjardins Online Brokerage), and fourth place (National Bank Direct Brokerage) was each one point, respectively.

As poorly as the Canadian discount brokerage industry as a whole performed relative to 2019, however, there was one exception. National Bank Direct Brokerage was the only discount brokerage to see a surge in investor satisfaction scores, rising 31 points from 2019 to 2020, and moving from last place in 2019 to fourth place in 2020.

Despite dropping four points on a year-over-year basis, Questrade managed to rise in the rankings from third place last year to take top honours in 2020 with a score of 736. At the other end of the spectrum, Scotia iTRADE ranked last this year, falling to a score of 703.

One online brokerage that stands out as having a significant shift downward is CIBC Investor’s Edge. This popular low-cost online brokerage fell 40 points compared to last year and slipped from a second-place finish to a seventh.

Importantly, not all Canadian online brokers were measured or reported publicly. Popular brands such as Qtrade Investor, Virtual Brokers (soon to be CI Direct Investing), Interactive Brokers, and HSBC InvestDirect did not have data published about their level of investor satisfaction in this year’s results.

So, what’s driving the decrease in investor satisfaction among Canadian DIY investors? One of the biggest areas where Canadian discount brokerages appear to be struggling is website stability and accessibility.

Somewhat shockingly, 46% of DIY investors reporting an issue with an online brokerage chalk it up to a problem with the website, and 29% of investors surveyed were unable to access their online brokerage website at least once during the prior 12 months.

It is difficult to determine how representative the sampling of this survey is for all DIY investors across Canada, but these numbers are concerning, considering that investors put their nest eggs or significant savings in the hands of online brokerages. These results, however, do help to validate the scores of complaints DIY investors have logged on Twitter about Canadian online brokerage websites going down during trading sessions. And, keep in mind, these survey figures were generated prior to the COVID-19-induced market meltdown, which saw unprecedented surges in trading volume and account sign-ups.

Not being able to access a trading account when you’d like to is frustrating enough; however, not being able to do so when market opportunities open up – that certainly leaves an impression.

Perhaps the most intriguing number reported in the online brokerage rankings was that 26% of millennials (or younger) indicated that website inaccessibility has got them thinking about switching brokerages. That’s a huge number in an extremely hard-to-win-over segment.

The rankings from J.D. Power highlight that the Canadian online brokerage space will increasingly face a challenge to escape becoming commoditized. In these latest investor satisfaction metrics, what ultimately separates one online brokerage from another is becoming harder to distinguish.

Perhaps ominously, the relatively slow pace of innovation in this online service leaves the industry exposed to possible disruption by a provider able to deliver the technology piece with greater reliability and at a lower price. This is certainly the case in the US, in which an online brokerage was able to grow to an extraordinary size while lowering the price of commissions to zero.

With so many online brokerages facing technology challenges even when investors weren’t stampeding into and out of markets, the past several weeks have uncovered the limits of customer service and client experience capabilities at many online brokers. And while the news certainly isn’t all bad at Canadian brokerages, the scores show that investors expect online brokers should be doing better.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – May 25, 2020

It’s likely a sign of the times, but what we see and hear on the news is so vastly different depending on where we live. And, even though we are all living through the collective experiment of lifting restrictions, we are starting to learn more about the unforeseen consequences of COVID-19 as well as the fact that in spite of it all, the world continues to move and people in it continue to want to push forward.

In this edition of the Roundup, there is a lot of news to digest. Up first is a continuation of the wave of information that continues to wash ashore treasures of data that reveal why online brokerages in both Canada and the US may be busier than they’ve ever been, in spite of the economic mayhem playing out on both sides of the border. Though that is a hard act to follow, there is even bigger news that broke this past week in the Canadian online brokerage space, as two new brands get set to enter the discount brokerage pool, making it ever harder for Canadian online brokers to safely keep their distance from one another. As always, we’ll close out by highlighting chatter from across the DIY investing forums and from Twitter.

Chequing the Data: Why Discount Brokerages are So Busy

After being sheltered in place for several weeks, cities and economies across North America are cautiously venturing back into a “new normal.”

While most organizations and individuals are looking forward to getting things back on track, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that the experience of social distancing was not evenly experienced across the economy. Although many companies found themselves having to shut down, there were others that were able to continue via “remote work” and which fared much better than expected.

For online brokerages, it has been busier than ever during the market turmoil and accompanying shutdowns. The reopening of many economies may represent the end of historic participation by investors in the markets, and as a result, trading levels may drop off. Of course, what led to this level of activity is starting to become clearer, although the consequences remain to be fully understood.

While it is difficult at the best of times to know exactly what drives investors into the market, in the recent market run-up from March lows, a theory gaining steam is that the jump in investor participation is a combination of more people working from home (or being forced to stay home), a lack of major sporting events to bet on, and, perhaps most ominously, government support cheques.

Data gathered by a story published in the Financial Times explains much of what we have been covering over the past several weeks: that online brokerages in the US have seen record growth in the number of new accounts as well as in trading volume. What was especially interesting in this article, however, was what appeared to be motivating individuals trading in the markets in both the US and Canada.

On the US side of the border, the FT article cited examples of prominent sports-betting personality Dave Portnoy, who founded Barstool Sports, jumping into stock trading with E*Trade. The fact that he commands a significant social media following and was also featured on CNBC serves as an indicator for a much more common persona of “investor” at this time. The portrait of the “everyday” investor stuck at home with nothing else to do and making lots of money is a tempting (and familiar) trope of the stock market.

It was a mention of what was happening in the Canadian market, however, that is likely to raise more than a few eyebrows.

Below is the excerpt from the FT article. What stands out from this passage is that there are Canadians who are jumping into online trading and potentially using government stimulus to do so. To boot, the online brokerage happened to be RBC Direct Investing.

In fact, this article isn’t the first or only source to suggest this. Another reference to this behaviour was cited in an article by popular financial personality Garth Turner several weeks ago.

It’s not just in Canada, either, that stimulus cheques are being used to jump into the stock market. A recent report mentioned on CNBC about where stimulus cheques received by Americans ended up getting spent found that individuals with incomes between USD $35K to $75K increased their spending on stock trading by over 90% compared to the week before they received their stimulus cheques. The article went further to state:

“Exact reasons for that surge in interest is unclear. Most analysts chalk it up to the attractiveness of the market comeback, but it appears the stimulus money at least played a part.”

Regardless of the source of coverage, there seems to be a consensus that there have been investors participating in the stock market who might not have the same depth of understanding of risk management as traditional investors would. As a result, the “experts” forecast greater volatility ahead as either more investors pile into a rally at its later stages or retreat at the first sign of weakness.

For online brokerages on either side of the border, COVID-19 has generated a substantial level of trading activity and interest in trading online. The unintended consequences of the emergency relief funding provided by governments have resulted in a number of DIY investors in both countries opening new accounts or funding existing accounts.

While there have been cycles in the past where stock market run-ups have attracted fast money (in particular from younger investors/traders), it does beg the question as to what online brokerages will be doing to prepare for the inevitable fallout.

Almost 20 years ago, day trading met its match in the dot-com bubble. Ten years ago, there was an enormous financial crisis that ingrained skepticism among a generation of investors. This time may not be different in terms of investors getting ahead of fundamentals, but there will almost certainly be tough lessons to learn considering who has been drawn into the market and what they have been drawn into it with.

Newish Kids on the Block: More Discount Brokerages to Choose From

The Canadian online brokerage space is undoubtedly a crowded one when it comes to providers for online trading. With 13 brokers serving a relatively small population of investors, the business case for online brokers is a challenging one. It is likely the reason why, outside of one or two online brokerages in Canada, the current suite of providers are subsidiaries of much larger financial firms. In the online brokerage business in Canada, scale is essential to survive.

These past few months, it has been interesting to observe who among the online brokers in Canada was actively attending to the “growth” functions of their business and who was not.

For example, we’ve been watching who has been launching new features, updating their website with important messaging related to COVID-19, advertising online as well as creating content for investors. Despite the calm and perhaps lack of movement on the front end, this past week revealed a lot about why activity appeared to have dwindled at a couple of Canadian online brokers.

The first big story announced this past week was that CI Financial is going all in on acquiring the popular roboadvisor WealthBar (in which they had already held a 75% stake). CI Financial acquired BBS Securities, parent to Virtual Brokers, in 2017 and since then has been working on an important digital-transformation business initiative, which means the development of the front end and brand of Virtual Brokers has been slower than has historically been the case. Interestingly, the reason for the reduced pace of activity may now become clearer as the announced acquisition also revealed that CI Financial will be launching CI Direct Investing, which will ultimately replace Virtual Brokers.

Taking what has been a household name (Virtual Brokers) and rebranding it into a new entity will be a challenge and likely require a considerable investment of marketing resources. However, with a diverse wealth-management offering that now includes the roboadvisor and direct-investing services in combination with a significantly sized parent company, bank-owned brokerages will undoubtedly have to adjust course. Slides from an investor presentation earlier in the month reveal the new look and organization of the self-directed investing arm at CI Financial as well as motives as to what drove the decision.

Another big story that broke last week was the news that Morgan Stanley will be launching a wealth-management business in Canada that will include, among other services, a self-directed investing platform – aka discount brokerage.

Earlier this year, Morgan Stanley also made a bid to acquire online brokerage E*Trade Financial, and while still awaiting regulatory approval, this could set the stage for the return of this online brokerage to Canada. Interestingly, as part of its strategy to broaden its wealth-management offering in Canada, Morgan Stanley will be working with Canaccord Genuity as its local platform provider that will be delivering clearing, custody, and wealth-management solutions. It is worth noting that Canaccord Genuity acquired online brokerage Jitneytrade last year and launched a rebranded online brokerage Canaccord Genuity (CG) Direct.

With new online brokerage brands in play in the Canadian discount brokerage market, it is going to once again push existing online brokers to accelerate their plans to innovate and to create experiences and incentives to attract DIY investors’ attention (and loyalty).

Though CI Financial is certainly a formidable wealth-management entity, there will be challenges to break into the DIY investor market, especially via the Virtual Brokers brand and experience. On the other hand, the return of an iconic online brokerage brand like E*Trade would make a huge splash in DIY investor circles.

Many Canadian DIY investors, young and old, have heard of both E*Trade and Morgan Stanley, which will pose a serious challenge to existing Canadian online brokerages – including the bank-owned brokers. And, it is worth mentioning that E*Trade offers commission-free trading, which, if they do come to the Canadian market at that price point, would be a watershed moment for commission pricing for Canadian DIY investors.

Despite what appeared to be a slowdown in activity on the front end of certain online brokers, there clearly have been major developments taking place behind the scenes. For existing online brokerages, the race is now on to contend with at least two new incarnations of serious competitors. Of course, it doesn’t stop there, either. Morgan Stanley’s moves won’t go unnoticed in the US wealth-management space, and there will be a number of other providers who may be running their own assessment of competing against the financial giant on Canadian soil. So, as big a story as this is, these new developments could spark an even more volatile time for the Canadian online brokerage space. Talk about a new normal.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – April 20, 2020

Another week gone by; however, the metrics that matter aren’t hours and seconds, it seems. Tests, cases, and, unfortunately, deaths are part of a grim set of metrics that serve as the very human backdrop to everybody’s new normal. While it’s harder to distance ourselves from the news than it is from one another, what is clear is that markets and online brokerages are pressing forward albeit in surges and stumbles.

In this edition of the Roundup, we continue to track data on the surge in interest by DIY investors to step into the markets, with new information shedding light on what is also likely happening here in Canada. From there, we take a look at how Canadian discount brokerages of various stripes are walking the tightrope of advertising during the time of COVID-19. As usual, we serve up the latest DIY investor comments from Twitter and the investor forums.

Inflection Points: Earnings Data Shows Trading Surge at Online Brokerages

Of the many letters being thrown around during the COVID-19 crisis, the one that seems to capture many themes concurrently is the letter V. For online investors (and by extension online brokerages), the two variations of V that matter are volatility and volume. Stock market volatility during March has been unprecedented and volume of trades executed equally so. The next V that might come into play is the shape of the recovery, which many speculators are hoping will be swift and sharp.

Earlier this month, Interactive Brokers reported a sharp increase in the number of online discount brokerage accounts opened – an eye-watering 22% increase compared to last year. This past week, another (arguably the most) important online brokerage in the US, Charles Schwab, reported its earnings. Though it did not meet estimates on the earnings front, tucked inside the earnings announcement were two very incredible facts. The first is that trading volumes in March represented 27 out of the 30 highest trading volumes of all time for this massive online brokerage. Daily average revenue trades (or DARTs) clocked in at 1.54 million, a 98% increase for the quarter. The second important piece of information contained in that earnings announcement is the tsunami of account openings – over 280K new online brokerage accounts opened in March alone and bringing the total number of online investing accounts to 609,000 accounts for the quarter and a total of 12.7 million.

Additional data from Robinhood, the firm that was the proverbial straw which took the price of commissions for trading in the US ultimately down to zero, also crossed the radar last week. The data reported that their daily trading volume was threefold higher in March compared to Q4 of 2019 and they attracted a tenfold increase in net deposits which ultimately led to revenue of USD $60 million in March, triple what they had made in February. Indeed, these numbers helped bolster the case for Robinhood to be raising USD $250 million, which puts their valuation at USD $8 billion.

While Canadian markets are different than in the US, one reasonable inference to draw is that Canadian discount brokerages have seen a similar spike in their business that likely rivals anything they have ever experienced – including the crypto and cannabis surges of 2018.

Unlike the online brokerage markets in the US, most Canadian online brokerages have yet to drop their commission fees substantially and as a result, have likely generated significant commission revenues from heightened trading activity.

Indeed, until the return to work fully takes shape in Canada and the US, the likelihood of stock market volatility is going to remain high, which is great news for active traders and some of the speculators being pulled into the markets in search of a quick return. It is also great news for online brokerages in Canada who stand to benefit from the increased trading activity. The exact letter that defines the recovery – whether it’s a V, U, W or L – will determine what spells success or failure for the near term.

Online Brokerage Advertising in the Age of COVID-19

The data gathered from online brokerage activity over the past several weeks has validated the immense interest in trading online. For Canadian discount brokerages, the ‘usual’ playbook during predictable times of investor interest is to advertise. After all, if people are out looking for an online brokerage account or interested in trading, it makes sense to be visible.

These are unusual times, however, so it is interesting to see how online brokerages are wading into the ‘marketing’ efforts during this tenuous time of ‘doomscrolling’ and massive social media content consumption.

For the moment, three Canadian online brokerages that have been spotted advertising on Facebook and/or Instagram are Qtrade Investor, Scotia iTRADE, and TD Direct Investing.

A quick scan of the ads show something interesting – that both Scotia iTRADE and TD Direct Investing are featuring female protagonists as the DIY investor. In the case of Scotia iTRADE, they opted to push their campaign from the fall of 2019 which featured “self-starters” – essentially entrepreneurs who also were notable social media personalities to boost the brand with a younger audience. By comparison, TD Direct Investing also took a much more contemporary view of a DIY investor, not sitting at home but out and about on their phone.

During this current state of affairs, both bank-owned brokerages’ ads seem to strike a similar tone but neither quite give a nod to the current sentiment. In contrast, Qtrade Investor’s ad is simple and strikes a thankfully positive tone to the long list of bad news stories and jarring autoplay videos. Pleasant clouds and blue skies are almost a setup for what seems like a travel ad, but nonetheless set a backdrop for a compelling message proving the point that sometimes less is more, including on social media. More importantly, it seems like an astute “read the room” move.

Another small blip on the radar this week was the move by Virtual Brokers to tweet out an investor education piece to help explain some investing basics. Normally a tweet by an online brokerage doesn’t really seem newsworthy; however, in this particular context it is the first post by Virtual Brokers in some time, so the timing and the content are interesting, especially against the backdrop of what is likely a pick up in DIY investor interest.

That said, the push to advertise or broadcast content on social media is not without some degree of risk. There continues to be negative consumer sentiment about the experience of wait times to get in touch with online brokerages here in Canada, especially for the resolution of issues that require a phone call. A case in point is this post by Questrade on Twitter, which managed to get a pointed response focusing on wait times.

And they are not alone. A scan of the tweets of the week continues to reveal cringe-worthy wait times to talk to an online brokerage that references brokerages that are actively advertising at this time and those that aren’t. Even the most astute marketing team coming into the crisis couldn’t escape the fundamental requirement to have the product fulfill the promise of reliability. Wealthsimple Trade continued to experience system and trading issues last week, creating its own doomscrolling feed of unhappy campers.

There’s no doubt the level of interest for DIY investors to start trading in the market has surged. As many investors have rushed into opening new accounts and many existing account holders have been more active than in some time, systems are starting to show their strain. For Canadian online brokerages, the difficulty is to make sure their systems are stable enough to handle the flood of interest.

With that in mind, we anticipate more online brokerages might start leaning into their advertising programs on social media, and some with promotional offers, to get the right kind of attention at a moment when DIY investors are hungry for some good news.

At the moment, markets seem to have found their footing – a situation that could change at any point. Here’s hoping several Canadian online brokerages start to find theirs.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – April 6, 2020

April has finally arrived. As much as the year is moving quickly, it simultaneously feels like it is moving incredibly slowly. As with the reality in markets, any bit of information about where things go next with the COVID-19 crisis is highly prized.

In this edition of the Roundup, we wade into the shallow deals and promotions pool to start April – in spite of record online investor interest in trading online. From there, we shine a spotlight on a major Canadian discount brokerage that looks like they will once again shake up the features offered by other online brokers. We close out this edition of the Roundup with highlights from investor forums and chatter from the Twitterverse.

New Month, Familiar Deals

It’s the start of a new month. Not just any month either – the one month in the year that typically starts off with some good humour. Alas, the lack of new discount brokerage deals or promotions to kick off the month is no joke.

Like the markets themselves, there has been a considerable pullback in the number of brokerages participating in the most appealing deals and promotions categories: cash back and commission-free trading offers.

If we were in ‘normal’ times, this situation might not seem as unusual after the post-RRSP deadline push. After all, it is expected that leading into that deadline, investors are already actively thinking about their money and investments.

That said, these are not normal times at all.

Despite what is clearly the grimmest economic picture many of us have ever lived through, for Canadian online brokerages, what should normally have been a very slow period in April has turned into one of the busiest seasons on record.

Likely a result of the unprecedented volatility, many folks self-isolating and therefore working from home, and with only so much streaming content to be viewed, means that there is now attention being put on stocks and trading online in volumes that likely exceed the Great Financial Crisis. What is very different now, however, is the scale and scope of impact to the economy from the measures being taken by countries across the globe to flatten the curve on COVID-19 spreading.

With so many prized stocks now on a literal fire sale, bargain hunting investors have been rushing into the market through the door that is the online brokerage. Normally, when Canadians are this interested in trading stocks, online brokerages ramp up their offers and incentives. To reiterate – these are not normal times – and one clear indicator of that is the lack of promotional offers that have been deployed for DIY investors.

Nobody wants to be seen to be taking advantage of a crisis, however, and the conundrum for Canadian online brokerages is this: do nothing about reducing fees/commissions at this time or lowering barriers for folks getting into the markets, then ‘business as usual’ could be like profiteering. Conversely, launching a promotion that would be talk up getting into the most volatile market ever could seem remarkably tone deaf.

What is becoming clear in the COVID-19 pandemic is that major brands are stepping up to help in whatever ways they can. Apple is stepping up to make 1 million face shields a week. Tesla is building ventilators. Breweries and even Louis Vuitton are making hand sanitizer. As “order execution only” entities, the single best goodwill gesture for Canadian discount brokerages to offer to Canadians would be waiving of commission or administrative fees – especially for low balances or inactivity – and especially to those seeking financial relief.

In these far-from-normal times, a rethink is required on what brands stand for and mean in the face of this collective crisis. Normally a deal or promotion is intended to appeal to new clients. Perhaps this is the moment when it would be appropriate to consider promoting the infectious kindness that shows we’re all in this together and that even small acts of kindness can go a long way.

RBC Direct Investing Takes Trading Quotes to the Next Level

It’s one thing to be making investment decisions in a volatile market – but for many active investors, it’s a must to be able to see where there are areas of demand or supply when trying to fine-tune a decision to buy or sell. The stakes are much higher when actively investing, so getting the most accurate and up-to-date information on market prices are key. Enter the world of streaming and in-depth quotes.

Late last year, RBC Direct Investing enabled free Level 1 real-time streaming price quotes for TSX and TSX Venture equities and ETFs. This past week, RBC DI rolled out what is arguably one of the best data features after real-time streaming Level 1 quotes: free streaming Level 2 quotes for TSX and TSX-V listed stocks and ETFs.

For DIY investors, and the online brokerage space here in Canada, it is hard to overstate the value this brings to investing online.

Level 2 quotes, also known as depth of market, can cost over $100 per month, and while the new feature from RBC Direct Investing does not bring with it a top-tier trading platform, the value here is hard to overlook.

The table below compares the prices per month that streaming Level 2 quotes would cost at comparable online brokerages in Canada and it is evident that this feature is anything but cheap.

It is important to once again point out, however, that the prices for this streaming data option at other online brokerages referenced above usually come bundled with a sophisticated trading platform with many more bells and whistles for fast trade execution and charting capabilities than does the web experience at RBC DI.

That said, most of those Canadian discount brokerages referenced above waive some, most, or all of the data fee only when a minimum trading activity or asset deposit threshold is reached. So, the standard offering of the RBC Direct Investing streaming Level 2 quote is of particular appeal to investors who don’t mind the web interface and who can’t or don’t want to constantly have to trade to maintain an activity threshold. Of course, spending on commissions to get a “free” data feed doesn’t quite add up as a winning strategy but that is exactly the position DIY investors would be in at most brokerages.

For everyday investors, free streaming Level 2 quotes may or may not be something that is widely accessed, but for those investors who appreciate the added window into areas of potential pricing support or resistance, this is a very useful feature. In particular, as volatility increases in many illiquid stocks and bid/ask spreads widen, placing market orders can end up in overpaying for a security, and placing a limit order without knowing what else everyone is either selling or buying at puts investors at a significant information disadvantage.

While not quite the bombshell of dropping commission prices, RBC Direct Investing has unquestionably raised the bar considerably for other Canadian online brokerages, especially their bank-owned brokerage peers.

The standard web-based browser experience now including streaming Level 2 quotes means that other online brokerages will have to work harder to adjust their value proposition to a somewhat active or sophisticated investor. Even with so much attention being drawn away from online brokerage features these days, it’s safe to say RBC Direct Investing’s position in the online brokerage race just leveled up.
