Discount Brokerage Deals and Promotions – April 2015

*Updated April 17* At the outset of April, there’s lots of deals and promotions activity to report on. Like most people, Canadian discount brokerages have done quite a bit of ‘Spring cleaning’ with their deals. For those looking to open an online trading account, this month has a number of interesting offers to consider.

RSP season was a big catalyst for many brokerages which resulted in an all-time high number of deals (25+) being offered through February and dropping to 15 by the end of March. With many of those offers set to expire at the end of March, we weren’t sure which would live to see another day and which would expire, however as March drew to a close, at least a handful of offers started to show signs of being continued, albeit briefly.

While it looks like many of the biggest brokerages are taking a breather, other brokerages are seizing that chance to step up. Some of the independent and less well-known brokerages, for example, are launching promotions that are sure to get the attention of self-directed investors as well as the larger brokerages.

April begins with 15 deals being offered by 7 different brokerages. There are two offers set to expire within the month, and three more by the end of the month. As has been the case with most deals and promotions, the number of deals at the beginning of the month is likely not going to be the same at the end.

Expired Deals

There were 10 discount brokerage promotions that expired in March. Many of these offers were extensions of offers initially launched as incentives during “RSP season” as well as one offer from Questrade that was timed around the Chinese/Lunar New Year.

Notably, RBC Direct Investing and TD Direct Investing left the deals field (for now) at the end of March. Also, National Bank Direct Brokerage closed out its rather sizeable offer as March ended.  Desjardins Online Brokerage technically saw the expiry of its over three year old $300 commission offer however another (larger) offer has replaced it.

Below is a list of the offers that expired within or at the end of March 2015:

  • HSBC InvestDirect            50 commission-free trades
  • Questrade          Unlimited Trading Offer
  • Questrade          Unlimited Trading Offer RSP
  • Questrade          Chinese New Year Promotion
  • Scotia iTrade      Cash back + Free Trade Offer
  • RBC Direct Investing       20 Free Trades
  • NBDB    $500/$1000 Commission Rebate
  • TD Direct Investing          200 Free Trade Offer
  • Disnat   $300 Commission Credit
  • Questrade          iPad Mini Offer

Qtrade’s RSP contest promotion also concluded at the end of March.

Extended Deals

Just before the end of March, BMO InvestorLine extended the deadlines for two of its currently advertised promotions.  Their Youth Promotion was extended once again, this time with the expiry date now bumped to April 30th.  Interestingly, the RSP promotion was also extended for another two weeks with the new deadline for this offer moved to April 15th.

New Deals

*Updated April 17* It’s been a busy week for discount brokerages launching their new looks and celebrating the events with new deals. BMO InvestorLine rolled out their new public facing website this week and with it they also launched a new promotion offering either a cash back or commission-free trading choice.  Their latest offer requires asset deposits of at least $100,000 to be eligible for either $250 cash back or 125 commission-free trades.  The other tiers for this offer include: depositing between $250,000 – $499,999 to receive $500 cash back or 250 commission-free trades; depositing $500,000+ to receive either $1000 cash back or 500 commission-free trades. See table below for further details.

Another promotion crossed our radar this week that was not advertised but is open to all.  The promotion is a cash back or commission-free trade offer from Scotia iTrade and has been part of their tour with Larry Berman. The offer itself is similar to previous (and current) offers except that there are more deposit tiers and correspondingly different cash back and commission-free trade amounts. Interestingly, because it provides a longer time horizon to use the commission-free trades, it is slightly more competitive an offer than the current BMO InvestorLine offer, however the flip side is that cash back rebates will take slightly longer.  A scan of the terms and conditions has been taken since no information was posted online, however for more information on this offer be sure to contact Scotia iTrade directly.  See table below for further details.

*Updated April 13* To celebrate the launch of their new Investor Information Centre in downtown Toronto, Scotia iTrade has taken the interesting step of launching a substantial promotional offer alongside a similar promotion. The newest offer, however, trumps the existing promotion hands down.  In their latest promotion (open to both new and existing clients) Scotia iTrade is combining free trades AND cash back as part of this latest incentive (the other promotion requires that individuals choose free trades OR commission-free trades).

Specifically, individuals depositing $15,000 – $49,999 can receive $75 cash AND 75 free trades; individuals depositing $50,000 – $99,999 can receive $125 cash AND 125 free trades; individuals depositing $100,000 – $249,999 can receive $250 cash AND 250 free trades; and individuals depositing $250,000 or more can receive $500 AND 500 free trades.   The biggest ‘catch’ to the is offer, according to the terms and conditions, is that individuals must open the account at one of three specific locations in downtown Toronto.  Here is the quote from the terms and conditions:

To qualify for this offer, new Scotia iTRADE account must be opened at one of the following locations: Scotia Plaza Banking Branch, 40 King Street W, Toronto, ON, M5H 1H1; Scotia iTRADE Investor Information Centre at 48 Yonge Street, Toronto, ON, M5E 1G6; or Scotia iTRADE Investor Information Centre at Scotia Plaza, Concourse Level, Suite CAB001, 44 King Street W, Toronto, ON, M5H 1H1.

For more information and details on this deal, see the table below.

This month there are four new commission-free trade or cash back offers and a new transfer fee promotion.

Virtual Brokers has stepped back into the deals arena after a month-long break with an offer that is sure to get other brokerages’ attention. Their latest deal offers 25 commission-free stock or ETF trades which are good for up to a year – far longer than most of the offers currently on the deals and promotions list.

Although Scotia iTrade retired their largest offer yet, they have brought back two other offers in its place. First, their $500 or 500 free trade offer. Scotia iTrade still remains one of the only brokerages to be targeting deposit sizes of over $500,000.  The other offer making a comeback is the 100 free trade offer (which also includes a trial offer to their trading platform FlightDesk).

Desjardins Online Brokerage’s latest offer, however, is going to raise a few eyebrows.  Their long standing offer of $300 in commission credits has been replaced with a $500 commission credit offer for deposits of $50,000 or more in assets. This is an attention grabbing number as comparable offers require deposit sizes of at least $500,000 (e.g. Scotia iTrade).  Drilling down into the fine print, however, this offer combines the transfer credit (of up to $150) as well as commission-free credits.  Thus, for individuals switching brokerages to Desjardins Online Brokerage it may be closer to $350 in commission credits if the full transfer fee has to be covered.  Of course, for those thinking of switching, it is worth requesting or negotiating that the brokerage cover all of the transfer fees as well as offer the full credit ($500) which could then make this offer stand head-and-shoulders above the others currently being offered for the $50,000+ deposit category.

While technically not initiated at the beginning of April, Questrade introduced a new version of their prepaid Visa offer midway through March.  This latest offer has up to a $250 prepaid Visa card for deposits of $100,000 or more (there are lower prepaid Visa card amounts available for smaller deposit sizes too).

Finally, Qtrade Investor is offering a new transfer fee rebate offer in which individuals who switch to Qtrade with at least $10,000 can have up to $150 in transfer fees covered.  Although this is a limited time offer, it is the lowest deposit amount required to qualify for that level of transfer fee coverage.

Discount Brokerage Deals and Promotions – March 2015

*Updated March 21* March is finally here, and for many it couldn’t be here soon enough.  With it comes the promise of Spring, a time for change and new beginnings.  In an interesting twist, the Canadian discount brokerage deals and promotions landscape seems to be mirroring this phenomenon.

Heading into March, there are a number of deals and promotions geared towards the RSP contribution deadline (March 2nd) and as a result 5 out the 24 deals (21%) ended within the last few days of February.  With an additional four deals are scheduled to expire at the RSP contribution deadline of March 2nd and no new offers announced at the outset of March, the offers pool has thinned out significantly (for now).  So, while March will technically begin with 19 offers, within the first week of March this will drop to 14 promotions.

Perhaps the most interesting observation about the remaining discount brokerage deals is how many of them are set to expire within or at the end of March.  With the exception of six deals (3 of which are ongoing offers), and not counting the RSP offers,  9 out the 14 (64%) discount brokerage deals are scheduled to expire by month’s end.

What this means for DIY investors is that there is likely to be a lot of volatility in the deals and promotions space this month and next. Whether existing offers get extended out or replaced is the big question.

Online brokerages are still in a busy season (post RSP contribution deadline) as they will be looking to win business from DIY investors wondering where to put any potential income tax returns.

March madness will certainly be taking over NCAA basketball but for Canadian online brokerages, March is going to be filled with its own set of surprises, upsets and wildcards to stay on top of.  Stay tuned as this could be quite the ride into Spring.

Expired Deals

At the outset of March, there were five deals that expired from last month. The expired promotions included deals from BMO InvestorLine, CIBC Investor’s Edge, Questrade and Virtual Brokers.  Here are the specific deals that expired:

  • BMO InvestorLine – 5 Free Trades on Tablet
  • CIBC Investor’s Edge – Commission-free trades + cash back offer
  • Questrade – 10/100 commission-free trades; $50 prepaid Visa
  • Virtual Brokers – 50/100 commission-free trades

Extensions

*Update March 7* RBC Direct Investing has extended their 20 free trade offer. The new deadline for this deal is March 31st, 2015.

There were no deal or promotion extensions noted at the outset of March.

New Deals

*Update March 21* Questrade continues to add to their list of promotional offers. Their latest offer is similar to a previous gift card-linked promotion however in its current form, this offer consists of four tiers of prepaid Visa card amounts ranging from $50 to $250 for deposits ranging from $5,000 to $100,000.

In addition to meeting the minimum deposit requirements, to be eligible for this promotion, individuals must also execute at least one commission generating trade within 60 days of funding the account. See the table below for additional information and be sure to read the terms and conditions associated with this offer and pay particular attention to the holding period conditions.

*Update March 7* Questrade has (re)launched a commission-free trade offer for new clients only.  The offer is for either 10 or 100 commission-free trades (good for up to 60 days) for clients who deposit either $1000 or $10,000. See table below for more details.

While there were no new deals announced at the time of publishing (March 1st), there were several offers that did appear mid-February worth mentioning.

In particular, Credential Direct stepped into the deals/promotions space with a commission-free trade/cash back offer.

Questrade launched a brief Chinese New Year themed offer (cash back + contest draw) as well as a 100 commission-free trade + subscription (to Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada’s newsletter).

We’ll continue to monitor the deals through March and as always, if there are offers that you’ve spotted and would like to share with other DIY investors please let us know.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – February 20, 2015

View image on TwitterIt’s not often that a haircut makes the news. For a change, however, it isn’t the haircut that Greece’s debt holders are going to take – this one comes from North Korea’s Kim Jung Un. So, what does a head of hair from a head of state have to do with Canadian discount brokerages (you might be asking)? This past week they’ve both been taking Twitter by storm.

In this week’s roundup we’ve pulled together an interesting assortment of news and observations from Canadian online brokerages. First, we take an in-depth look at the latest promotional offer to be launched in an already crowded deal space. Next, we piece together something interesting that’s been happening on Twitter and provide an example of how this social media channel is one DIY investors will want to tune into. On the home stretch we’ll take a look at the official launch of one online brokerage’s new website, cruise through the upcoming investor education events and close out with a look at some interesting developments in the investor forums.

 Credential Direct Deals Themselves In

After standing on the sidelines of the discount brokerage deals and promotions melee, Credential Direct has stepped in swinging with their latest offering.  Along with Credential Direct, Questrade also added a pair of promotions, bringing the total number of advertised Canadian discount brokerage deals to 26.

While Questrade’s newest offers means that they retain the title of offering the most promotions of any discount brokerage, seeing Credential Direct step into the deals and promotions space is going to ruffle a few feathers with their competitors.

Credential Direct’s latest promotion, launched earlier this past week, offers new or existing clients either a cash-back or commission credit amount that varies with the size of the portfolio deposit.  While the cash back and commission credit amounts are in line with offers from CIBC Investor’s Edge and Questrade, what sets this offer apart is the deadline to use the trades (only trades used by September 30 are eligible for rebate) and the tiers of deposit.

Previous to the launch of Credential Direct’s latest promotion, only Scotia iTrade had an advertised deal for deposits of $500,000 or more. With this new deal, however, Credential Direct has now joined the relatively few brokerages that are pitching promotions aimed specifically for clients depositing more than $100,000. And, it is in this category that the Credential Direct offer stands out. Credential Direct is offering unlimited commission-free trading (until the end of September) for clients who deposit $500,000 or more whereas a similar deposit from Scotia iTrade would land 500 commission-free trades.

It warrants mentioning, however, that Questrade also has an unlimited commission-free trading offer with a minimum deposit of $50,000. The dramatic difference in deposit amounts for commission-free trading offers means that both Questrade and Credential Direct are going to likely get compared on how well they each cater to the active trader – the most likely kind of client to take advantage of the commission-free trades. For the brokerages not advertising something ‘special’ to clients bringing in bigger deposits (i.e. >$250,000), they will likely have to come up with something noteworthy just to be seen as ‘keeping up’.

#LookAtMeNow

Although discount brokerages being on Twitter is not something new, there is definitely something interesting happening on the social media network.

This month, Credential Direct looks to have officially stepped into the social media space by launching their own Twitter account and TD Direct Investing, one of the largest Canadian bank-owned brokerages, has stepped up their efforts on Twitter.

Most Canadian discount brokerages (and probably many Canadian investors) are still skeptical of Twitter’s utility.  Online brokerages currently on Twitter include Interactive Brokers (although this account is not Interactive Brokers Canada exclusively), Jitneytrade, Questrade, Scotia iTrade and Virtual Brokers. Of that group, it’s fairly clear that Questrade and Scotia iTrade have been the most active for the better part of the past two years.  All that may change, however, now that Credential Direct and TD Direct Investing are stepping in.

In particular, while Credential Direct has just one account, TD Direct Investing appears to be deploying multiple individuals in the service of broadcasting their message. From a user’s perspective, this might make it cumbersome to follow several different TD Direct Investing related Twitter accounts (we’ve made a list which can be subscribed to here) however from the other brokerage’s perspective, this is definitely a cause for worry.

The big question for self-directed investors, however, is ‘so what?’  Does Twitter even matter?  The answer is increasingly ‘yes’. In 2015, Twitter has now become the news, with as many news agencies reporting about what’s happening on Twitter as there are Twitter users tweeting about the news.

Twitter has become one of the ‘go to’ resources for breaking news, a place to vent, and a way to connect.  In a previous piece on discount brokerages on social media, we highlighted that Twitter is a valuable resource to find out about breaking news, outages, deals or new developments even before any of these hit the mainstream media.

For online brokerages, Twitter also is a place where clients come to voice their concerns or, more rarely, sing the praises of great client experience. DIY investors curious about what it is like to deal with client service at a particular brokerage can simply scan the Twitter feed of any of the brokerages (caution: some of the more colourful comments are definitely NSFW) and review the conversations between client and provider.

The latest moves by TD Direct Investing and Credential Direct signal that Twitter is about to become a new arms race. In this battle, victory goes to the most interesting, not necessarily to the biggest player. Questrade was able to pull this off in the lead up to their launch of the wealth management unit. Going forward however, the new entrants and the existing players will have to step up their collective game 140 characters at a time if they want to earn the interest and attention of DIY investors.

TD Direct Investing now Offers Online Trading with the CSE

As a segue from talking about the value of Twitter, this past week showed the value in finding out some valuable information via the social media channel.  This week there were a number of interesting tweets from the TD Direct Investing team about WebBroker (their online trading platform) being able to trade CSE-listed securities.  The reason these tweets are interesting is because there have been no official announcements/news releases from either the Canadian Securities Exchange or from TD Direct Investing on this demonstrating, at least on this occasion, that Twitter can move faster than PR departments sometimes can.  A quick check of the TD helps community forum also confirmed the new development – although even internally there seemed to be some disconnect between features being enabled and front-line staff finding out about it.

With TD now connected to the CSE, the vast majority of Canadian discount brokerages are patched in and DIY investors can trade CSE listed securities directly from their online trading platforms (instead of having to phone in).

Desjardins Online Brokerage’s New Website Launched

As we had reported last week, Desjardins Online Brokerage had scheduled the roll out of their new website before the end of February.  Their new website officially went live on February 18th and, as was mentioned in our preview of the site, it is a major upgrade from their prior site and raises the bar design-wise on most of the other online brokerage sites in Canada.

From the Forums

This past week there was a very interesting development in the investor forums.  One of the more popularly discussed brokerages, Virtual Brokers, joined RedFlagDeals and actually responded to a client complaint.  While Questrade has been dutifully covering all kinds of forum/social media ground, this marks a rare occasion that Virtual Brokers has decided to engage with clients on this particular forum.  The topic – whether fractional shares after a reverse split would be issued – is a very interesting discussion in and of itself and is worth a read to see how it played out.

That’s a wrap on this week’s roundup. While the snow packs may be keeping many folks indoors (not so for the lucky West Coasters), there’s a silver lining that at least the Oscars will be on.  Ironically, of course, a lot of interesting reaction and perspective will be able to be seen on Twitter. #GoFigure #HaveAGreatWeekend

Discount Brokerage Deals and Promotions – February 2015

*Update Feb. 16/2015* It’s fitting that on Superbowl weekend that we launch into one of the most competitive discount brokerage promotions months on record. After all, for football teams and fans alike this is the biggest weekend of the season.

For brokerages heading into RSP season the sentiment is somewhat similar.  How can we be so sure? With 21 24 open offers (22 26 if you include some of the contests and selectively advertised deals), more than half are timed to end on or just ahead of the RSP contribution deadline of March 2nd.

The deals frenzy has managed to pull most Canadian online brokerages off the sidelines and into the fray.  Brokerages such as HSBC InvestDirect, RBC Direct Investing and Virtual Brokers who have historically been far less active in the deals space each have open offers.  Other big names such as TD Direct Investing and Qtrade also jumped in through January.  There have also been reports of ‘“selectively advertised’ offers from brokerages such as BMO InvestorLine which, because they are generally intended for a select few, are not included in the table below.

Brokerages not offering some kind of promotion are now in the minority – however it’s still early into February and there may be more surprises to come.

Expired Deals

There were three offers that officially expired in January.

  • Questrade’s 25 commission-free trades for a year promotion
  • BMO InvestorLine $250 cash back promotion + 50 commission-free trade
  • Scotia iTrade’s 100 free trades + FlightDesk promotion

Extensions

One minor extension was spotted on the Scotia iTrade refer-a-friend promotion which saw the expiry date shift from mid-March to the end of the month.

Revisions

Another interesting change was also spotted on the Virtual Brokers offer.  It appears that Virtual Brokers has had a change of heart with regards to how long commission-free trades will be eligible.  Specifically they’ve elected to roll back the date from the end of September back to the end of April.  While having an offer shorten or expire early is not unprecedented, it is rare, and it drives home the importance of understanding that offers can change without notice.  While the initial offer to use trades until the end of September made it very competitive, the choice to roll back the dates makes the offer more comparable to others out there.

New Deals

At the time of publication (Feb. 1) there were no new deals that were launched at the outset of February.

As always if there’s anything that we’ve missed please pass this information along and we’ll try to include it in our listings.  If we can’t place it in the table (e.g. if it’s selectively advertised) you can also submit it to the deals thread in our community section.

*Update Feb. 4/15* The transfer fee coverage for CIBC Investor’s Edge has been updated.  Although not posted on their website, we have confirmed with client reps that the there is a transfer fee coverage of $135 + tax for deposits of at least $25,000 from another brokerage/institution. This is (and has been) a standing offer and is now included in the transfer fee table going forward.

*Update Feb. 16/15* A trio of new offers are launching at the mid-point in February.

The first offer is from Credential Direct – a brokerage that hasn’t historically offered many promotions/deals.  Nonetheless, the latest promotion from Credential Direct is a choice between either cash back or commission-free trades.  The offer is made up of three tiers based on deposit size.  For the first deposit tier ($25,000-$99,999) qualified applicants can receive either 100 commission free trades or $100 cash back.  The next deposit tier ($100,000 – $499,999) offers 200 commission-free trades or $200 cash back.  Finally, for deposits of $500,000 or more Credential Direct is offering either unlimited trades or $500 cash back.  Included alongside this promotion is a transfer fee coverage deal whereby Credential Direct will cover up to $150 in transfer out fees from another broker for individuals depositing/transferring at least $25,000. There are a couple of important points to be aware of including charges for ECN, SEC and/or marketplace fees.  See table below for further details.

The second offer to hit our radar mid-month was from Questrade.  Their latest offer is a combination of commission-free trades along with a subscription offer to Motley Fool Canada. For deposits of at least $10,000 qualified applicants will receive 100 commission-free trades along with a three month subscription to Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada newsletter service.  For those interested in learning more about what that service entails, here is a link to the Motley Fool Stock Advisor Canada FAQ page.  See the table below for additional details.

The third offer, also from Questrade, is a Chinese New Year themed promotion that has a cash-back component as well as a draw for a gold coin.  The minimum deposit for this promotion is $5,000 and applies to individuals opening margin accounts or Forex/CFD accounts only.  Registered accounts were not mentioned as being eligible for this promotion.  See table below for additional details.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – January 30 2015

It looks like football players aren’t the only ones trying to score big this weekend. Burgers, fries and Candadian discount brokerages are also in the mix. With the frenzy of offers rounding out January, we’re heading into February with over 22 deals and promotions for anyone looking to open up an online trading account. That’s plenty to chew on.

In this week’s roundup we take a look at the issues that got people talking this week – that’s about brokerages not burgers. First we take a look at two different measurements of client service and try to make sense of why they’ve obtained two completely different results. Following that, we’ll take a look at one independent brokerage’s bold voyage into a place they haven’t really been before: online investor education. Finally, with deals & promotions clearly on the minds of investors, we’ve collected an assortment of forum posts for specific online brokerage deals.

Defining Customer Service

As much as online trading doesn’t require directly dealing with a brokerage’s staff, there are a handful of times when it is unavoidable or even required. In spite of technological advances around them, many brokerages don’t have a live chat or don’t rely on that function when it comes to sensitive account information and/or trading instructions.

In last week’s roundup we mentioned that financial service analysis firm, Dalbar, announced the results of their annual evaluation of telephone client service at Canada’s online brokerages. In it both HSBC InvestDirect and RBC Direct Investing earned the “Winner’s Circle” designation for meeting the standard for high quality telephone client service (for our in depth look at the latest results, click here).

This past week another financial service firm, Surviscor, announced their results of an email based evaluation. According to Surviscor’s evaluation, Credential Direct earned a “platinum” designation with a response time of under two hours and Qtrade and Scotia iTrade were awarded “gold” (which reflects an email response time of between two and four hours).

While fast email response may be of interest, what was far more interesting was that both the Dalbar rankings and Surviscor rankings yielded completely different results when it comes to ‘customer service’.  In Dalbar’s evaluation, RBC Direct Investing and HSBC Invest Direct scored the highest of the evaluated brokerages. Conversely in the Surviscor rankings, HSBC Invest Direct placed 9th whereas RBC Direct Investing tied for last place.

For DIY investors, this is undoubtedly a confusing situation. Factor in the headlines and spin doctoring and you have an especially tough time figuring out what these results really reflect.

Take the following examples from recent news releases:

  • “Qtrade Investor takes gold for customer service” (from the news release here)
  • “Credential Direct Named Top Brokerage Firm for Customer Service in Canada” (news release here)
  • “HSBC InvestDirect and RBC Direct Investing both emerged as premier providers in customer service in 2014” (from the news release here)

Then there are the numbers themselves. Although Dalbar only reported the average and the range between highest and lowest (which was 13 percentage points) scores on client service, when compared with the range between Surviscor’s highest and lowest scores (a difference of 83 percentage points) the disparity is hard to ignore.

From the outside, it is puzzling how firms capable of implementing highly sophisticated trading platforms and rank highly on client service on telephones can’t seem to figure out prompt email or vice versa.

The lesson when looking at any of the rankings of online brokerages continues to be that consumers need to be vigilant when it comes to understanding exactly what is being measured and how those measurements are being made. Clearly, in this case, ‘customer service’ isn’t a standard unit of measure the way ‘commission pricing’ may be. Unfortunately, headlines and press releases (and evidently source materials) can yield conflicting definitions of quality customer service.

Event Review

This past week Virtual Brokers held an educational webinar aimed at beginner investors. The session, presented by personal finance author Gail Bebee, was the first in a two-part series and featured an overview of the basics of investing. Given that it was just under an hour long, this presentation did not go into extensive detail on any one topic but instead looked at several topics relevant to investing generally.

Included in the discussion was a breakdown of the different asset classes individuals can invest in; a quick comparison of mutual funds versus ETFs and how to start planning to invest. Bebee spent a bit of time discussing ETFs in particular and highlighted the benefits and potential risks/costs. This webinar was recorded and may be made available for viewing in the near future on VB’s website.

Part two of this presentation will look take a deeper look at how to build a portfolio. For more information on when this session is planned, check our investor education events section.

This upcoming week will feature a number of investor education events. We’ll be updating the events calendar shortly so check back soon for details on February’s selection of investor education opportunities.

From the Forums

The record volume of deals & promotions from Canadian brokerages did not go unnoticed by investors on the popular deals forum RedFlagDeals.com. Below is a list of links related to discussions of deals at each respective discount brokerage:

  • BMO InvestorLine: This deal mentioned by one forum user is actually a special targeted offer. Nonetheless the bonus is for an extra $100 on top of the advertised $300 cash back RSP promotion.
  • Questrade: With so many offers on the go from Questrade, users may have a tough time deciding between free trades, cash back or even an iPad mini. Click here to read what forum users had to say.
  • RBC Direct Investing: With a year to use 20 free trades, RBC DI has got some forum users talking. While not their best offer to date, it is one of the few with such a long expiry date. Click here to read the discussion.
  • TD Direct Investing: This thread discusses the current 200 free trade offer by TDDI.

That does it for this week’s roundup. Heading into the weekend here are a couple of miracle stories to keep you entertained. For those who don’t believe in zombies or that cats don’t have 9 lives, here’s a cat that will make you rethink that.

And finally for the football fans and video gamers. For those that didn’t think they’d see Marshawn Lynch play nice with media ahead of the Super Bowl, it seems like maybe you’re in for a bit of a shock on this fun video.

Go Seahawks!

Exclusive: A Year in Review and Look Ahead from Canada’s Online Brokerages

Pic_Blog_201412_YearInReview_LeadImage_B*Edited Dec. 22/14* What an exciting year to be a DIY investor. As an active observer and commentator on the landscape of Canada’s online brokerages, we’ve seen some dramatic changes this past year. Whether it was reduction in commission pricing, changes in account types or enhancements to platforms, user experience or investor education, 2014 presented no shortage of exciting developments.

With so many online brokerages, DIY investors now enjoy more choice in terms of who they want to end up doing business with and how they want to trade online. The flip side to the benefit of having so much choice, however, is actually keeping up with all of the innovation that’s taking place amongst online brokerages.  Every time a new feature, like a platform or a new order type, comes out, there is a lot of information that goes with it.

In their own words

So, in keeping with our continued efforts to track and structure the information coming from Canadian online brokerages, we thought it would be great if we gave Canada’s online brokerages the opportunity to give investors their own take on 2014 and also to provide everyone with a preview of where 2015 is heading.

We reached out to all the brokerages and were more than pleased with the response we received to participate. Our request was simple. We asked that brokerages provide SparxTrading.com readers with a recap of 2014, perhaps with milestones or achievements as well as to provide some direction as to what’s around the corner for next year.

What follows is a really interesting (in our opinion) compilation of voices of 8 9 of Canada’s most influential and visible online brokerages – from bank-owned online brokerages to independent brokerages. It is clear from reading these submissions that 2014 was a busy year everywhere. Nobody was standing still. Even more interesting, however, are the hints and previews online brokerages have shared for 2015.

Getting up to speed

Heading into RRSP deadline season and the first half of 2015, we know that there will be many individuals who are either considering online investing or who are already with a provider and would just like to better understand the landscape of choices that are out there.

This compilation is a great starting point to learn more about each of the providers listed. They are certainly a diverse group of providers which is reflected in the different ways in which each has written their submission. In our opinion, this diversity will become one of the biggest themes for 2015.

With standard commission pricing having dropped significantly across several brokerages, the focal point will turn to standing out. Our view on this is that ‘standing out’ will be achieved by being ‘outstanding’. That means improved service, pricing (yes, we still think there’s room to go lower for some), features and user experience.

We believe that in 2015, Canada’s online brokerages will work even harder to differentiate themselves from one another. And, as was the case in 2014, we are looking forward to tracking these developments and helping our readers make sense of them all as they unfold.

Click the logos above or the page numbers below to read this year’s submissions.

Editor’s Note: We received a submission from CIBC Investor’s Edge after our original publication date and so we have included their submission as part of this series. For functionality purposes, however, we have placed their submission at the end of the series rather than in alphabetical sequence.

Discount Brokerage Deals and Promotions – October 2014

*Updated October 9, 2014*

Savvy traders understand that there’s always a bull market somewhere.  Even though the recent pull back in the major stock markets and indices suggests investors may be cooling off, Canadian discount brokerages have a different idea, especially when it comes to promotions.

We began last month with a brief lull in the number of offers pitching 50 or more free trades.  Halfway through September, however, that changed dramatically when Scotia iTrade launched one of its largest offers to date: 500 commission-free trades (or $500 cash back) for deposits of $500,000 or more.   This was a unique offer (which we detailed in an article here), because it signaled a decisive shift by Scotia iTrade to get the attention and assets of investors with substantial portfolios.

The deals on the calendar at the start of the month arrived in late September and look to be around until at least the end of the current month if not longer.  A noteworthy transfer deal also showed up from Credential Direct, a sign that they too may be stepping up their efforts at competing with other Canadian brokerages.

Expired Deals

The end of September saw 2 deals from Questrade expire: their Cash Back Promo and RESP Offer.

Extended Deals

The deal that got extended this past month was Questrade’s 100 free trade offer with a new deadline of October 30th.

New Deals

*Update Oct. 9, 2014: The deals are heating and this time one of Canada’s largest discount brokerages, TD Direct Investing, has been spotted promoting a commission-free trade offer. For individuals depositing at least $50,000, the full offer includes up to 200 commission-free trades (maximum rebate of $2,000),  a rebate for their advanced dashboard premium streaming package (maximum rebate of $87) and for those who transfer funds in, coverage for up to $150 of transfer fees. The trades must be placed within 60 days of the account opening in order to be considered eligible for the rebate.  Also, global equity trades are not eligible as part of this offer.

*Update Oct. 6, 2014: As part of their big price drop announcement, CIBC Investor’s Edge has also dropped a major deal into play with their newest offer that combines free trades AND a cash back component too.  Unlike many of the deals we’ve seen before, this is a fairly aggressive offering which certainly got our attention and will likely do the same for consumers and other brokerages.  For starters, a deposit of $25,000 in assets qualifies an individual for $100 cash back and 25 free trades; a deposit of $50,000 – $99,999 qualifies for $200 cash back and 50 free trades; and deposits of $100,000+ qualify for $300 cash back and 100 free trades. Given the different tiers for this offer, CIBC Investor’s Edge is coming out swinging at the other discount brokerages big and small and so we expect some kind of interesting responses to come up in short order.

As was the case last month, this month isn’t starting with any new deals announced as of the beginning of the month.  Midway through September, however, a number of deals did appear.  One of the deals we’ve mentioned already was the Scotia iTrade ‘500 commission-free trade’ offer, however there was also the infamous iPad Mini offer from Questrade which is back again and a transfer fee offer from Credential Direct that showed up.  Specifically, Credential Direct is offering a transfer fee promo where individuals can have the transfer fee rebated if they switch to Credential Direct from another broker (with at least $15,000) and Credential Direct will waive the fee in case that clients wants to ‘switch out’. This offer is something we’ve seen before from Credential Direct however coupled with their recent commission price drop, there is a good possibility that we may see more from them in terms of promotions this upcoming year.

As always we appreciate hearing about and sharing deals that we may have missed.  As a general guideline, deals that we can include directly on our listing have to be open to all potential clients but users may post links to offers in the comments section that might apply to certain readers

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – July 11, 2014

The word heading into the end of this week: Drama. This weekend it seems no matter where you look there is some source of incredible drama. An Argentinian team playing for the World Cup final in Brazil, LeBron ‘going home’ to Cleveland and rumours of Eva Mendes having Ryan Gossling’s baby – wait what?

Not to be outdone by rivalry, homecomings, and bundles of joy, Canadian discount brokerages had their fair share of news making to do. In this week’s roundup we take a look at a major commission price announcement that takes one online broker out of the shadows and back into the spotlight. Next we highlight the competition between brokerages as July deals and promotions start to show up in droves. We then take a quick look at the next trillion-dollar idea brokerages are trying to position themselves for. Of course no roundup would be complete without a healthy dose of investor commentary from the investor forums.

Don’t H8 The Player

Although they’ve been out of the spotlight for quite some time, Credential Direct stepped up their game by announcing a major commission drop and pricing structure overhaul.

Gone are the convoluted pricing tiers and the separation between ‘active’ and ‘non-active’ traders. In their place: one price, $8.88, is now applicable to all online equity trades. While it is a significant internal shift, the pricing move also is bound to generate quite a bit of buzz with other Canadian brokerages who have recently lowered their trading fees to $9.95/$9.99. Read more in a special feature post on the new Credential Direct offer here.

Save the Dates

There’s something about calendars that have got two Canadian online brokerages inspired.

In the first instance, Questrade has just rolled out a very unique set of offers in a bid to win new clients/assets. As part of their latest promotion (among several already ongoing ones), Questrade is offering new clients the option of receiving a free trade a month for 12 (for deposits of at least $12,000) or 24 months (for deposits of $20,000 or more).

The next calendar inspired promotion is from RBC Direct Investing as part of a lead up to its 25th anniversary. Specifically RBC Direct Investing is holding a weekly giveaway of $1,000 for 12 weeks (between July 24th and October 9th) for individuals that are a part of its “community”. Existing members of the RBC Direct Investing community are automatically registered. To become a member of the community one has to either be an RBC Direct Investing client or be an RBC Royal Bank Online Banking client and have a practice account. Paying it Forward

While many people get excited about the prospect of new bundles of joy, the conversation about the other end of the circle of life is understandably less enthusiastic – unless you happen to be a financial adviser. The notion of inheritance and passing along wealth to subsequent generations has got lots of financial institutions trying to position themselves for nearly a trillion dollar’s worth of wealth to be passed on. This past week, BMO InvestorLine released the results of a study it had commissioned on inheritance and what that might mean for individuals and their investment decisions.

 Symbolic Gestures

Ticker symbols can seem like a language unto themselves. Part of the process of learning to invest on one’s own means having to get comfortable with learning the different ways in which ticker symbols get entered and the different exchanges that exist to look for stocks to trade. In this post from RedFlagDeals’ investing thread, one user shares their confusion with making sense of the symbols and the markets that they refer to.

More Potato Skin in the Game

In this interesting post from the Reddit Personal Finance Canada thread, a community member shares their journey of getting a Couch Potato inspired ETF portfolio set up within their RBC Direct Investing account. The other members chimed in to provide some great tips on the finer points of building a low maintenance portfolio.

That brings us to the end of the roundup. Regardless of what or who you’re cheering for this weekend, there will most certainly be lots to chat about around the water cooler next week. Have a fantastic weekend!

Is Eight Enough? Credential Direct Drops Commission Pricing

The price war between Canadian online brokerages just got a little hotter as Credential Direct announced a major shift in its pricing structure and a substantial commission price drop.

Effective July 9th the standard commission per online equity trade at Credential Direct is $8.88. That is a significant drop from their previous standard commission price of $19 per trade and also a reduction in price from their previous ‘best price’ of $9.95. To boot, it is also strategically positions Credential Direct as a lower cost alternative to many of the $9.95 standard commission offers that are currently in play across the online brokerage space.

Drop it Like it’s Hot

The new pricing structure offered by Credential Direct is almost a complete overhaul from its predecessor.

First, the distinction between “active trader” and “standard user” has been removed. That means that all clients, regardless of trading activity level, are offered the best possible price on an online equity trade commission and online options trade.

Another major change is that all online equity trades are $8.88 regardless of the price of the stock/ETF being traded. This is especially welcome news for those who like to dabble in low dollar value shares, ‘penny stocks’ or junior companies where the size of the orders can be quite high. Under the previous commission schedule, non-active users could pay up to $250 per trade depending on the size of the order and the price of the stock.

In many ways, the new pricing plan was the result of a major shift at the beginning of the year from many of Canada’s large bank-owned brokerages. What is particularly interesting, however, is that Credential Direct didn’t just match the offers – they actually bid underneath them.

How Fortun-8

Another interesting touch was the choice to use all 8’s in the pricing. The use of then numbers seems like a clever way to add some cultural appeal to the many East Asian investors that see the number as a sign of good fortune. Given the significant footprint Credential Direct has in British Columbia the new pricing may indeed prove to be self-fulfilling.

Of course other institutions, that focus heavily on connecting with East Asian or Chinese clientele, such as HSBC InvestDirect, have incorporated the number 8 into their pricing schedules for similar reasons (and another example of a ‘fortunate’ coincidence: TD Direct Investing’s Investor Centre address in Downtown Vancouver is 888 Dunsmuir St).

The Tradeoff

While the lowering of the commission price is likely welcome news for many who actively trade, there is a tradeoff that the new pricing structure imposes: administrative fees.

Specifically, for clients who have less than $15,000 in combined assets with Credential Direct, they may be subject to a $25 per quarter administrative fee. Historically Credential Direct did not charge administrative/activity fees but it looks like they’re banking on lower commission pricing offering more competitive value. Other fees are also increasing – especially for telephone assisted trades and some administrative services. These other fees are scheduled to take effect in October of 2014.

Like a couple of other online brokerages, however, Credential Direct does offer clients who fall under the $15,000 balance threshold a couple of ways to be exempt from the administrative fee.

For those with less than $15,000 in combined assets, the first way to be exempt from the administrative fee is to make at least two commission generating trades per quarter. According to this scheme the annual cost of placing two trades per quarter at the new commission price would be $71.04 (which is cheaper than paying the $100 per year for passively holding).

The second way for clients with sub-$15,000 accounts to avoid the administrative fee is to register for a pre-authorized contribution plan of at least $100 per month. What is great about pre-authorized contribution plans is that they create a structured and scheduled way to put some money aside, so having this option is a plus for those just starting out with DIY investing.

New clients (defined as clients that have accounts that are under 6 months old) will also be exempt from the administrative charge.

The Bottom Line

For most online investors, getting a break on commission pricing is welcome news. Other brokerages – such as the bank-owned brokerages as well as (and especially) the independent brokerages have fewer reasons to smile.

The drastic overhaul of Credential Direct’s pricing model is going to make it much easier for investors to understand the commission pricing (and to afford it) – something that the marketplace is clearly communicating to the Canadian online brokerage community.

Credential Direct has been extra bold by challenging the $9.95 standard price floor established by the bank-owned brokerages earlier this year. Whether or not fortune favours their boldness remains to be seen but at the very least they’ve got some lucky numbers to help their chances.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – April 18, 2014

With the shortened trading week this week, it looks like markets got a chance to end the week on a high note. Now that spring is in full bloom (sorry Albertans) there will most certainly be tulips – which serve as an appropriate reminder about how crazy bubbles can form and burst.

As much as price is driven by supply and demand, the forces of competition are interesting to watch unfold in the discount brokerage market where, yet again, a commission drop was announced by a major bank-owned brokerage except this time with a twist. In addition to competition in price, there also appears to be movement in the investor education space – something that may be the next battleground amongst Canadian discount brokerages. Of course, with the competition comes complexity. Thankfully, an exciting announcement from here at SparxTrading will hopefully make things easier for DIY investors to do their research as the competition amongst brokerages continues to heat up.

Scotia iTrade Commission Pricing Drop

This past week Scotia iTrade jumped into the price drop ring but with a twist. Instead of keeping pace with the other bank-owned brokerages at the standard commission pricing level, Scotia iTrade announced that they’re going to go after the highly active (and highly valuable) trader segment and lower their best commission level from $6.99 down to $4.99 flat for clients that make 150 or more trades per quarter.

While in dollar terms, the offer may not seem like a lot, for highly active traders, the savings are substantial enough to probably get their attention. The savings for traders that make 150 or more trades per quarter translate into at least $1200 per year.

One of the reasons why this deal ups the ante with both bank-owned brokerages and independent brokerages is because traders at that level of activity also qualify for free access to premium level of Scotia iTrade’s FlightDesk platform. This platform is a fairly robust trading tool so other brokerages that cater to the highly active segment will have their work cut out for them to match the total value of the offering.

The ‘cherry-on-the-sundae’ however is that Scotia iTrade is also pairing the new pricing drop with a deal. They’re offering up either cash back or free trades for new and existing clients that range from $50 to $500 or 100 free trades to 500 free trades depending on the deposit size. To learn more about the deal, check out our discount brokerage deals section.

Be on the look-out for an in-depth look a couple of follow up pieces we’re putting together on the commission price drop and the active trader segment.

We All Need Some Education

In a regular scan of the Canadian discount brokerage landscape, we picked up something interesting on a pair of different webpages.

On Credential Direct’s home page we spotted a large banner pointing to educational resources being offered to clients. While it just speculative at this point, it appears that after the session with Dan Bortolotti, Credential Direct may be moving to offer more education as part of its service offering.

CIBC Investor’s Edge has also picked up in activity by offering a couple of webinars this year, with the most recent one being a webinar on using some of Morningstar’s research features.

Although these moves are modest by comparison, investor education is definitely on the minds on several brokerages and even recent articles seem to suggest that self-directed investors can expect more of it to come.

Better Discount Brokerage Reviews Coming

For many self-directed investors, choosing or comparing online brokerages is no easy feat. In fact, this past week there two articles (this one on Morningstar by Gail Bebe, and this one on Globe Investor (paid) by Rob Carrick) that were published to try and add some clarity to the process. Thankfully, however, the process of researching and choosing an online trading account is about to get a little easier.

As announced in our post earlier this week, we’re getting set to roll out our new, redesigned brokerage profiles. The new profiles will make the research process much more efficient by including information that may self-directed investors are interested in learning about. We’re rolling out a beta version to a small group of industry participants before rolling it out in beta format at the end of this month. Check out the following post for more details.

Biting the Hand that (Data) Feeds You

The conversation on HFTs is still alive and well. In the following post on Canadian Money Forum, there was an interesting question posted on whether community members tended towards market orders or limit orders.

When the Dust Settles

Getting an order filled in stages can be stressful (and sometimes expensive) scenario that traders find themselves in. In the following post from the RedFlagDeals forum, there was an interesting thread that highlights the importance of understanding how particular brokerages treat partial fills for orders and why knowing your order types matters.

That does it for this week’s roundup. Hopefully everyone will have a chance to stop and smell the flowers this weekend – which is a great reminder going into Earth Day next week to take care of the green outside of your portfolios as well as inside.
