Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – March 14, 2014

This week’s discount brokerage roundup is a little ‘rounder’ than most as it falls on Pi Day. This irrational edition of the weekly roundup features a quick announcement about an ETF webinar reschedule followed by a release by one discount brokerage of a refreshed trading platform.  In addition, we provide some interesting results from US online brokerages that may be telling of what may unfold here in Canada and finally we’ll come full circle with an irrational forum post fit for an algorithmic king.

Credential Direct Webinar Moved

Although we were looking forward to the session with the Canadian Couch Potato this past week, it seems that this webinar got postponed.  The date for the new webinar with Dan Bortolotti is March 19th at 12 pm ET.

myQuestrade Gets a Refresh

Questrade users got a nice surprise recently as the discount brokerage rolled out its latest upgrade to the myQuestrade interface.  There are upgrades to monitoring one’s account including performance stats and charts that make staying on top of one’s account much easier than it used to be.   The reaction from Questrade users online was generally very positive – although it appears that there may be some third party compatibility issues with Mint.    To learn more about the updates, check out the video below the tweets.

Back to the Future

When it comes to online brokerage products, pricing and services, the US market tend to be an interesting place to look for clues as to what may be coming down the wire here in Canada.  And, unlike the title song from Back to the Future, it looks like the discount brokerage train will be looking for money and for credit.

As the Canadian marketplace tries to adjust to the newer reality of lower commission pricing, the US has already been working through this environment for quite some time.  An interesting set of articles released this week helps to paint a picture of what is going stateside that could shape how things unfold for Canadian discount brokerages.

First, data from this article adds to the evidence that more and more retail investors are participating in the markets.  An important takeaway (and perhaps disturbingly) is that many ‘institutional’ investors monitor the participation of retail investors in the market as a contrarian indicator – meaning when the public is piling in, the pros are on their way out.  With more and more retail investors coming in, it is safe to wager more seasoned investors are becoming more cautious.

A second piece, a news release from ratings agency Fitch, suggests that large brokerages are interested in attracting deposits and supplying fee based services to offset low trading commission revenues.  In their analysis Fitch also reaffirms the view that pricing for commissions will continue to be driven lower. The bottom line, bank-owned or larger online brokerages could start to make their managed products and ancillary services more of a focal point.  For smaller or independent brokerages, however, these other services aren’t an option (unless they partner with a bank) so increasing fees (as Questrade is doing with their cheque processing fee for example), getting more active traders, higher margin lending rates and/or aggressively pursuing more assets could all be part of the plan.

From the Forums

IPO Frequencies Going High Frequency

It seems that IPOs continue to generate interest, and while calling a bubble is hard to do, the word comes to mind when looking stories such as this one from the Financial Wisdom Forum that showcase a high frequency trading firm going public.  You can read up on the financial firm Virtu mentioned in the post here. Skepticism is warranted but also – what are they paying on trading commissions?

That does it for this week’s roundup.  Hope you all have an irrationally great weekend!

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – February 14, 2014

On this Valentine’s Day edition of the discount brokerage weekly roundup, romance is definitely the air for many folks.  Yes, it appears more bank-owned discount brokerages are lining up to show just how much they love their self-directed investor clients by offering lower commissions.   Courting self-directed investors, however, is going to take more than just price cuts.  As one low-cost brokerage showed this past week, getting fancier bells & whistles may be part of what’s needed to woo investors their way. In addition to ‘stuff’, another brokerage took to winning the ‘hearts and minds’ of investors by timing an Olympic themed promo.  Finally, this week’s review rounds out with some interesting education events being offered and a great forum thread on RESPs.

The Three Bank Bobsled Team

This past week, BMO InvestorLine became the third Canadian online brokerage to lower their standard commission fee down to $9.95 (click here to read the press release).  While not quite a race to the bottom, it seems that the banks are willing to match one another on their standard pricing. For self-directed investors this is definitely welcome news as the pressure will certainly be mounting on those remaining online brokerages with high (and complicated) standard fees to drop them. On a related note, there was an interesting article in the Globe and Mail regarding the move by bank-owned online brokerages to lower their fees as a strategic move to bring in revenues from sources other than the banking services.

Getting the Power

Not content to sit idly by as the bank-owned online brokerages drift into their pricing territory, this past week Virtual Brokers took aim at the platform and data category by rolling out their PowerTrader Pro platform in a bundle with free streaming data (with a catch of course).  For those brokerages that’ve been chasing the lucrative active trader segment, platforms and data fees (in addition to commissions) have always been a sore point.   The PowerTrader Pro platform, however, is built on the Sterling Trader Pro platform so it has definite appeal to active traders.  To that end, Virtual Brokers is offering free streaming data with the platform for those making complex options trades.  This package and platform take aim at TD Direct Investing’s US Trading Platform (aka ThinkorSwim), Interactive Brokers’ Trader Workstation and Questrade’s IQ platforms as well as those web based or desktop based platforms that don’t have the fancy scanners, charts and trade planning.

Metals for Medals

An interesting Olympic-themed promotion is being offered by Questrade.  Until February 24th, Questrade is offering 50% off precious metal commissions.  To boot, they are also offering a special promo every time Canada wins either a gold or silver medal.   For the physical precious metals bugs, it is but one more reason to cheer on the stellar performance of this year’s Canadian Olympic effort.

Investor Education Events

With all the talk of athletes and fitness, the couch potatoes out there also have something to cheer about.  Credential Direct announced this past week that they are holding a webinar with Dan Bortolotti aka the Canadian Couch Potato.  This webinar will be about building the “perfect” ETF portfolio and yes, attendees can join this webinar from the comfort of their couches.

Continuing on in the investor education theme, Desjardins Online Brokerage (Disnat) is holding a week-long series of education sessions Montréal & Québec City.  The events are free and topics cover a number of themes for self-directed investors.  Of note is that there are a couple of interesting sessions on taxation for investors/traders.  Check out our investor education calendar for more information.

From the Forums

Given the time of year, there is an increase in the number of questions about registered accounts of all kinds (RRSPs, RESPs and TFSAs).  One thread in the RedFlagDeals forum in particular stood out as being an interesting look at RESPs at discount brokerages – specifically on the point of joint subscribers.  Click on the post below to learn more about what folks had to say about RESPs at Canadian discount brokerages.

RESPs at Discount Brokerages

That does it for this week’s roundup.  Hope everyone has a great weekend and just as a reminder, Canadian and US stock markets will be closed on Monday – perfect timing given the release of the new House of Cards!

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – February 2014

*Updated Feb. 27th 2014*

Now that February is here, the RSP contribution deadline (March 3rd) is in the crosshairs of many investors.  Canadian discount brokerages have already stepped up the deals & promotions activities with last month seeing over 20 deals offered.   The most active of all the discount brokerages was Questrade followed by BMO InvestorLine however RBC Direct Investing’s commission lowering announcement also had brokerages scrambling to provide offers to get investors’ attention.

With 7 of the deals set to expire within the first few days of March, the sprint to the RSP deadline is on.   Given the combination of news from RBC and the scramble for new client assets at this time of year, February should hold its own fair share of surprises.  Be sure to check back regularly for updates or follow @SparxTrading on Twitter for announcements of deal/promo updates.  So, without further ado, here’s the discount broker deal rundown at the beginning of February.

Expired Deals:

Most of the deals that expired in January did so at the beginning of the month. These deals included:

  • Questrade’s Boxing Day Promo
  • RBC Direct Investing’s 25 Free Trade offer
  • BMO InvestorLine’s 250 free trade promo

Interestingly, a deal that was a bit of a ‘flash’ offer from CIBC Investor’s Edge that started and finished in January.  They were offering $400 + 50 free trades for $50,000 deposits and $200 + 25 free trades for $25,000 deposits.  It has been quite some time since CIBC has offered a special however given the changes going on in the marketplace, it may not be long until we hear from them again.

Extended Deals:

There was one deal that had its deadline extended out: Scotia iTrade’s refer-a-friend offer.  This promotion now expires at the end of March.

New Deals:

Updated Feb. 27/14: HSBC InvestDirect has launched a promotion for new and existing clients to celebrate their performance on Dalbar’s direct brokerage service evaluation.  The promotion offers clients 30 days of unlimited commission-free equity trading of North American and international equities (including ETFs).  Commissions generated from this 30 day period will be refunded within 90 days.  The terms and conditions are very manageable to get through and there is a well prepared FAQ document that explains how the deal works.  This promotion is set to run until March 31/2014. See table below for more info.

Technically this is the section for ‘new deals’ however Scotia iTrade’s 100 free trade + Flight Desk offer has been substantially modified to warrant placing it in the ‘new’ section.  It appears that Scotia iTrade has reduced the deposit amount required to qualify for this deal from $25,000 to $15,000 and has extended the deadline from the end of March until the end of June.  For those considering the deal, be sure to note the change in promo code also.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – December 6, 2013

This week’s discount brokerage roundup finds us crossing into the home stretch of 2013.  Now that December is finally here things will almost certainly begin to gear down on the discount brokerage front until 2014.  Even so, this past week had a number of stories from various discount brokers including a new fee & commission schedule taking effect at a major discount brokerage, an order type being removed from another brokerage, several discount brokerage-related events that popped up on the radar and finally a couple of interesting stories from the forums for good measure.

Trading Places

Speaking of measure, it being the beginning of the month, trading metrics from Interactive Brokers for November were released earlier in the week.  Trading activity (as measured by daily average revenue trades (DARTs)) showed an increase of 16% year over year however it was about flat compared to October.  A very interesting figure was the growth of customer margin loan balances which was $12.6 billion at the end of November compared to $9.6 billion from the year before.  While the figures show quite a dramatic change from last year, on a month over month basis, activity and growth appear to be steady.

Mind the Fees

BMO InvestorLine’s updated commission fee schedule took effect December 1st, with mostly nominal increases to their AccountLink service fees making up the bulk of the changes.  For more information on the new fee schedule, check it out here. Incidentally, there will also be another fee change coming in May of 2014 (details of which can be downloaded here).

Stopped Out

Scotia iTrade announced to clients that they are no longer accepting stop market orders on Canadian stocks.  As part of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) review on ensuring investors receive the best available pricing at the time of order execution, stop market orders were put under the microscope to determine whether or not they were beneficial or harmful to investors.

Ultimately, IIROC strongly recommended that discount brokerages ensure their clients use stop limit orders (i.e. that clients should be entering in limit prices) rather than stop market orders. For the full report (13-0191) outlining IIROC’s position on stop market orders, click here.

An Eventful Week

The SparxTrading Investor Education Calendar for December is full of interesting seminars/webinars from Canada’s discount brokerages. This past week two discount brokerages who don’t normally hold many seminars, Credential Direct and CIBC Investor’s Edge, held seminars on researching for investing ideas using Recognia’s Value Analyzer tool and Morningstar Research Tools respectively.

Two brokerages geared towards active and professional traders, JitneyTrade and Interactive Brokers, were among the sponsors of the Canadian Annual Derivatives Conference (organized by the Montreal Exchange) in Mont Tremblant this past week.   Although it was geared towards investment industry professionals, there were several interesting discussion topics which will undoubtedly also impact retail investors.

From the Forums

TFSA/RRSP room after an options trade loss

This past week, two forum discussions were definitely worthy of sharing.

The first was a thread from the Canadian Money Forum on taking a loss on an options trade and how (or if) it impacts the contribution room.

Unpublished commission rate deals

Regular SparxTrading.com readers know that the discount brokerage deals section covers most of the deals offered by Canadian discount brokerages.  Occasionally though, there are offers extended by discount brokerages to clients as an incentive to do more business with them (e.g. transfer a mortgage or loan over as well as open an investment account). This is known as ‘relationship’ pricing and while not every brokerage offers it, it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask.  The following thread covers one forum user’s experience with trying to get a better commission rate with BMO InvestorLine.

That’s a wrap for this week, have a great weekend and happy shopping (only 19 days left until Christmas!)!

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – September 20, 2013

Against the backdrop of smartphone maker drama, securities regulator announcements and US Federal Reserve tapering, Friday is finally here – and for some, it couldn’t come fast enough.  While it was hard to compete with the headline grabbing billion dollar writedown or a sexy new operating system, Canadian discount brokers were busy making some big moves of their own.

In this week’s roundup, I look at a roll out of a new mobile website, two new deals that popped up and a couple of investor education events readers might be interested in.

A New Front

This past week, National Bank Direct Brokerage officially unveiled the new mobile website (www.m.nbdb.ca).  For the most part, the mobile website improvement comes at the front-end where visitors can learn more about NBDB, access upcoming event information and do some market research.  In fact, there is something very unique about the mobile website relative to other discount brokerages in that NBDB has provided access to research on markets and stock quotes without having to log in.  This is very handy for anyone looking to get a quick update on market activity.

There is a review of their mobile website prior to the front-end upgrade which details what the experience is like after the login.

Deal Me In

Two new discount brokerage deals popped up on the radar this week.  The appearance of this first deal, while a surprise, is not unexpected given the level of competition between discount brokerages.

HSBC InvestDirect, which has been quietly adding some promotional material to its homepage, finally posted its latest promotion on their website. They are offering new clients 50 free trades (valid for 60 days).   What really sets this deal apart is that according to the deal terms and conditions, there is no deposit minimum.   A nice touch is that the terms and conditions are fairly simple to understand and they have also provided a frequently asked questions document to go with the deal to explain it.

HSBC InvestDirect's latest deal

The second deal spotted this week comes from Scotia iTrade. In their latest offer, new or existing clients that fund their account with $100,000 or more can get $150 cash back.   Cash-back offers have not been that popular except with bigger discount brokerages such as BMO InvestorLine, however new clients who sign up for this deal  are also likely to be eligible for the 100 free trade offer.

To see how the new HSBC InvestDirect deal  and the Scotia iTrade cash back offer stack up against other discount brokerages, click here.

Upcoming Events

This weekend many of Canada’s most popular personal finance bloggers, authors and enthusiasts will be in Toronto at the 3rd annual Canadian Personal Finance Conference.    If you are a fan of personal finance, you can learn about the conference here. If you want to tune into the buzz, check out the hashtag #CPFC13  or the Twitter feed below:

For those interested in learning about options trading or how options work, Options Education Day is coming to Toronto on September 28th. There is going to be a great lineup of speakers and several Canadian discount brokerages sponsoring the event will also be on hand. Check the event listing here for more information.
Finally, one more discount brokerage has decided to offer a free webinar on how to understand company reports. Credential Direct is hosting a free webinar (scheduled for October 3rd) put together by Morningstar Canada on how to understand company reports . For more information check out the event listing.

That wraps it up for this week’s roundup. Have a great and safe weekend and enjoy the last of the 2013 summer!

Maintenance Fees Get no RESP(ect) at CIBC Investor’s Edge

The swelling costs of funding higher education are on the minds of a lot of folks lately.  With the speed and magnitude at which fees for post-secondary tuition are growing, simply putting money aside for “junior’s” education may not be enough.  It seems like even the savings have to go out and find a second job to support the idea of paying for post-secondary education.

RESP(ect), Find Out What it Means for Fees

One of the tools that Canadian parents have at their disposal when it comes to saving for their children’s post-secondary education is the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP).  Recently, despite the dark clouds of rising fees for schools, there was a silver lining from one of Canada’s major bank-owned discount brokerages. CIBC Investor’s Edge  announced that they’re eliminating their annual RESP account administrative fees.

As can be seen in the comparison of registered account fees table, the cost per year for these accounts ranges typically from $25 to $50 for balances that range between $15,000 and $25,000. Prior to the announced change, CIBC Investor’s Edge, like many other Canadian discount brokerages, charged clients who had less than a certain balance (in this case it was $15,000) a $50 annual fee on the account.   In the case of CIBC Investor’s Edge, this fee would normally have been charged at the beginning of every September, so the recent announcement is a bit of a bonus for those existing clients who would have had to pay.

All the cool kids are doing it

CIBC Investor’s Edge now joins the likes of Credential Direct and Questrade in providing no-fee RESP accounts that self-directed investors can manage.

While independent discount brokers such as Questrade and Credential Direct may not provoke the bank-owned discount brokerages into action, now that CIBC has eliminated this fee, other bank-owned discount brokerages might have to take notice.

Traditionally the ‘convenience’ factor has been a benefit that bank-owned brokerages could offer over the independent discount brokerages. This latest move by CIBC Investor’s Edge, however, may provoke the other bank-owned discount brokerages to get creative on how to sweeten their offers to self-directed investors who also enjoy the convenience of doing all of their banking and investing in one place.

Make sure to do your homework

Like all offers, however, it is important that those considering the offer understand what the associated costs are of doing business with any brokerage.  Factors such as commission charges, inactivity fees, minimum trading requirements, exit costs and overall accessibility and support should still be taken into account when choosing a discount broker.  There are also restrictions and regulations associated with RESPs that self-directed investors should understand ahead of deciding to use them.

Overall, the fee removal by CIBC Investor’s edge will benefit investors with smaller RESP balances (those less than $15,000). Hopefully the move will encourage more investors to consider the benefits of RESPs and making their savings work hard so that their kids won’t have to.

(Editor’s Note:  At the time of publication, the fees and commissions schedule/section of the website for CIBC Investor’s Edge was not updated to reflect their announced offer, however they have been alerted to this discrepancy and are working to address it)

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – December 2012

For self-directed investors, it seems like the gift of discount brokerage deals has already been given in November. As it stands, the deals offered by discount brokerages into the end of the year are largely carried over from last month.

The most noteworthy deal announced mid-November was the unlimited trading offer by Questrade. Similar to the Scotia iTrade offer, these deals offer unlimited trading but for a limited time. If you’re looking for promos that have a much longer time frame to use up those free commissions, the deal by Disnat (celebrating their 30th year) gives investors up to 6 months. National Bank Direct Brokerage is offering its best rate on commissions for 6 months.

A number of deals (six by our count) will be expiring in December. These deals include the Scotia iTrade unlimited trading offer for 100 days which expires December 14th and deals from CIBC Investor’s Edge, Disnat, BMO Investorline, Virtual Brokers, Scotia iTrade and Credential Direct coming to an end by the end of December.

For those looking for a deal, it is an interesting time of year because on the one hand there are some compelling offers, but on the other, the busy season for attracting new customers (i.e. RRSP season) is right around the corner and so there is likely something in the works with most discount brokerages.

With the introduction of unlimited trading, the bar for discount brokerage deals has definitely been raised by Questrade and Scotia iTrade. Whether or not that is enough of an incentive to get consumers to choose a discount brokerage based on this kind of promo, however, is something we’ll find out if these offers persist. One thing is certain going into the holidays, those discount brokerages not willing to give deals or promos are also those less likely to receive the business of self-directed investors looking for a little holiday cheer.

Questrade Inactivity Fees Take Effect

Halloween isn’t the only scary event to come along this October.  Beginning this month, Canadian discount broker Questrade officially starts charging for inactivity fees – $19.95 per quarter to be exact. Once billed as the “no fee” discount brokerage, Questrade faced a strong backlash from its client base on Canadian deal site RedFlagDeals.com back in May of this year when Questrade departed from their long held stance against inactivity fees and announced the introduction of these fees. Not long after this announcement, however, it became apparent Questrade’s clients were more than unhappy at the news. In a highly responsive move, Questrade’s Director of Communications Lynn Suderman responded to their customers on the forum with the following statement:

Thank you everyone for your feedback here in RedFlagDeals. We’ve read each of your comments, which led to a passionate discussion among our staff. Our CEO said it best: the real value of Questrade is our clients. Yes, we have to implement pricing changes to reflect the changing nature of this industry. But we have to do it without compromising our promise to you: provide all Canadians with cost-effective brokerage services.

I’d like to address the changing industry first. The costs of maintaining a brokerage account, active or not, are going up. Until now, and unlike the majority of brokerages, we’ve avoided inactivity or maintenance fees to pass on those costs. But this is no longer prudent. We are at the point where our more active clients will be subsidizing inactive clients. (You can find the full statement here)

As a consequence of the client feedback, Questrade moved its original implementation date back to October from July 2012.  In addition, Questrade offered a number of exceptions to the inactivity fee.  Account holders under the age of 25 and charitable organizations are exempt from getting charged the inactivity fees as are  Questrade clients with $5000 or more in combined equity across their accounts as well as those clients who place at least one “commissionable” trade per quarter.  Basically, the client that this fee impacts the most is the 25+ year old who does not make any trades in a quarter AND who has less than $5000 in combined equity across all of their Questrade accounts.  So what options does that person have to avoid the dreaded inactivity fee?

The first option is to top up their account with a deposit so that the total balance (across all accounts combined) equals $5000 or more. If making a deposit isn’t an option, they could place 1 trade per quarter for a year racking up a total bill of  anywhere between $19.80 to $39.80 per year in commission costs (plus what the trade itself costs).  If, however, they are bent on not making any trades whatsoever, that person could choose to pay $79.80 per year ($19.95 x 4) and remain inactive. Of course, as a last resort, they could close their account with Questrade altogether which is free to do.  With an inactivity fee of anywhere between $19.80 and $79.80 per year, however, Questrade could be the cheapest account of inactivity-fee charging brokerages to maintain or if not the cheapest, then certainly not the most expensive.

One silver lining of the Questrade approach to inactivity fees is that if you do happen to incur an inactivity fee in one quarter, Questrade will apply that $19.95 fee as a credit against any trades you make the following quarter. From a strategic perspective, if you have an investment account and you can’t find a trading opportunity (either a reason to buy anything, sell anything or re-balance your portfolio) within 3-6 months and your combined equity across comes in at less than $5000 you still might not be ready to take on investing quite yet.

For those consumers who absolutely must have a no inactivity option, however, there are still three Canadian discount brokerages: Virtual Brokers, Credential Direct and Qtrade who offer no inactivity fee accounts to their customers (optionsXpress is currently not accepting new Canadian accounts otherwise there would be four) , with Virtual Brokers having the cheapest commissions among the three.

While the move on Questrade’s part is a departure from their historical position as the “no fee” brokerage, their move into charging fees is certainly a measured one and they appear to be working hard to preserve the relationship with their customers.  As the Canadian discount brokerage landscape continues to get more competitive, only time will tell if other discount brokerages will lower or eliminate activity fees to grab market share or if other low-cost discount brokerages will start to implement activity fees to keep up.
