Event Review – World MoneyShow Vancouver – April 2013

World MoneyShow VancouverThis year’s Vancouver World MoneyShow turned out to be a little different than most others. The exhibiting space felt a bit smaller than usual, the lineups took a bit longer and the schedule a bit less punctual.  As it turned out, this year’s MoneyShow would be the one in which this franchise would announce its Canadian retirement.

The big announcement the MoneyShow franchise would be exiting the Canadian market came as a surprise to many. With one more stop to go in Toronto this upcoming October, the MoneyShow organizers said they have enjoyed their time in Canada and will turn over their Canadian show back to the predecessor of the MoneyShow in Canada – the Financial Forum.  Charles Githler, Chairman and Co-Founder of the MoneyShow will be taking the reins for the Financial Forums next year and when we spoke to him at the show, he hinted that something bigger and brighter would be coming next year.

A small (26) and eclectic mix of companies, organizations and services exhibited this year ranging from multibillion dollar energy giant Royal Dutch Shell to consultants offering grant funding tips.  By far the most popular booth was the ‘crack the safe’ promotion held by MoneyShow which offered attendees the chance to punch in a code on a safe for a chance to win the $50,000 it contained.   There was also the usual assortment of promotional items and conference swag. Aside from some interesting pens and rubber ducks, nothing really stood out this year as being very cool conference loot.

Surprisingly, there were three discount brokerages in attendance and one notable absence. TD Direct Investing, National Bank Direct Brokerage and Interactive Brokers all attended the conference this year, however a regular at these conferences, Disnat, did not.  The discount brokerage’s booths varied in their ‘bells and whistles’ and giveaway items. TD Direct Investing’s booth was located in the prime real-estate – right at the entrance to the conference. They had their platforms on display as well as an army of staff to handle questions.  In contrast, Interactive Brokers took a no-frills approach with a lone rep, some brochures and a laptop. National Bank Direct Brokerage was offering their standard ‘hand sanitizer’ (a practical piece of conference gear after all that hand-shaking) as well as a special deal on trading commissions for new account sign ups (the details of which we’ll be posting in our deals section here).

One of the brighter spots of the conference was the assortment of interesting speakers discussing everything from market cycles and seasonality to exploration opportunities to personal finance and everything in between.

Bruce Sellery, personal finance author and owner of Moolala, gave an energetic and thought-provoking series of tips to help Canadians better approach their own financial management.  Other interesting speakers, such as Peter Hodson (of Canadian MoneySaver and 5i Research) gave investors some interesting food for thought about the mutual fund industry as well as important signs to look for when assessing investing opportunities. Most notable among those tips: “pull the weeds and water the flowers” when it comes to managing your portfolio’s winners and losers.  Marin Katsua of Casey Research also shared his dour forecast of the next few months in the mining and exploration space as well as his fascinating case for the energy market potential in Europe.

Overall, participants, speakers and exhibitors seemed to characterize Vancouver’s MoneyShow as a bit slower and smaller than usual. The MoneyShow’s formula of speakers, exhibitors and giveaways nonetheless provided something unique to attendees. Hopefully the Toronto show can be a chance for the Financial Forums to provide Canadian self-directed investors with a glimpse of greater things to come.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – March 2013

ArchivedDealsAs we move past the 2013 RRSP season, many of the promotions offered last month are either expired or will be expiring at the end of this month.  It seems like several discount brokerages are going to pass altogether on offering up any promotions for March whereas others are just extending out the deadlines of existing promotions.  This month there are seven discount brokerages offering promotions with free trades or credits for trades being the most popular.

The BMO InvestorLine RSP promotion offering 250 free trades is set to expire within the first week of March.  While 250 free trades is a substantial offer it is important that potential clients be clear that the “free trades” being offered in the advertisement refer to 250 free trades, not unlimited free trades which some of the other discount brokerages have recently been offering.  At the opposite end of the month, Scotia iTrade‘s 100 free trades offer is set to expire March 31st. Questrade is still running their 100 free trades promotion through till the end of April.

Both Scotia iTrade and National Bank Direct Brokerage are continuing to offer their refer-a-friend deals with iTrade’s offer now extended out until May 31st 2013.

We will keep an eye out for more deals may surface during the month and always invite our readers to share news of any promos they may have seen.

Getting to the bottom of who’s on top of Canada’s discount brokerage market

In search of Canada’s best discount brokerage

Getting to the bottom of who’s on top in the Canadian discount brokerage market is a lot trickier than it seems.  After all, one would assume that winning the crown of “best discount brokerage” is fairly difficult to do and also when a discount brokerage gets that award, it means they’re actually “the best”.  In our ongoing search to find an answer to the popular question “who is Canada’s best discount broker?”, we found a curious answer – it depends on what is being measured.

Over the past year, 7 of the 14 Canadian discount brokerages have been given titles such as:

  • Canada’s #1 Direct Investing Brokerage
  • Best Canadian Online Broker
  • Canada’s Top Online Discount Brokerage
  • Best Discount Brokerage
  • #1 Online Brokerage for Client Service in Canada
  • Highest in Investor Satisfaction
  • Top Bank-Owned Online Brokerage

With so many high achievers to choose from, it seems hard to believe that Canadians would have any kind of struggle finding a great discount brokerage.  According to these stats, almost 50% of the Canadian discount brokerage providers are “the best” at something, if not the best outright. It stands to reason that if the discount brokerages are doing such a great job, then clients would also be satisfied with the service they are getting.  The data, however, paints a different picture.

Desjardins Group buying a piece of Qtrade

Desjardins Group invests in Qtrade for the long-term

Desjardins Group, parent to discount brokerage Disnat, announced earlier this week that they are taking a significant ownership stake in Qtrade Financial Group.  Desjardins has committed to purchasing between 25 to 40% of Qtrade’s outstanding shares initially with the option to acquire the remaining shares within six years.

According to the arrangement between the two companies, Qtrade will continue to operate independently retaining its brand name and current leadership.  With regards to the discount brokerage component specifically, both Desjardins and Qtrade state that for the foreseeable future it will be business as usual.

Ron Cann, Qtrade’s VP of Marketing and Communications, says that the focus will continue to be on delivering a quality experience, something that Qtrade’s discount brokerage has earned top honours for from the Globe and Mail and Morningstar in recent years.  From Desjardins perspective, director of media relations André Chapleau says that the near term will be a time of learning – one in which the opportunities to build synergies will be explored.

Even though these two companies are going to operate independently, and they both seem committed to continuously improving their offerings for Canadian investors, there are still some wrinkles to iron out. Specifically, will Disnat, the discount brokerage side of Desjardins and Qtrade’s discount brokerage business compete directly with one another?  While there might be some overlap, each side seems to feel that their respective target client base is diverse enough in terms of trading style (active trader vs long term investor) and geography (Quebec vs Western Canada) that competition is not really a focal point.  The alignment of Qtrade and Disnat as alternatives to the big-bank owned discount brokerages is what both parties see as a value add for their respective clients and partners.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – February 2013

ArchivedDealsThis February will be the busiest month for football, love and RRSP deals.  Winning new business is clearly on the minds of big and small discount brokerages with a number of promotions aimed squarely at Canadian investors looking to open RRSP accounts.

Kicking off the RRSP-specific deals are a couple transfer deals from the usually quiet TD Direct Investing (formerly TD Waterhouse Discount Brokerage) and Credential Direct.   Credential Direct’s offer of $200 to cover transfer fees for accounts of $10,000 and over is currently the most competitive transfer fee deal. For those looking to transfer with less than $10,000 but who have more than $5,000, Credential Direct is also offering to waive the first year’s account administration fee of $50.  TD Direct Investing, by comparison, is offering to cover up to $150 in transfer fees for a $25,000 account.

Of course, February is also about love so what better way to show someone you care than offering them a referral to your favourite discount brokerage?  Refer-a-friend programs appear to be the preferred strategy for  National Bank Direct Brokerage, Questrade and Scotia iTrade. National Bank Direct Brokerage is willing to pony up $200 for referral business with $100 going to each the referrer and referee, with a catch being that payment will take place after 6 months and a cap of $1000 in referral payouts per client.  The 6 month payout time will give both parties plenty of time to think about where to spend their bonus dough. The Scotia iTrade and National Bank Direct Brokerage deals do come with a number of strings attached (the fine print alone on the iTrade deal is over 1400 words long vs ~450 words on the National Bank Direct Brokerage deal) so be sure to read the details carefully and while fully alert. Questrade’s offer of commission credits for referral business – $50 in credits for the referee and $100 for the referrer,  is much simpler to follow and even comes with a link to share the deal.

We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any more promotions, deals and special offers during February for investors and if you know of any we’ve missed, feel free to message us to have them added.

3 Tips For Do It Yourself Investors Researching Online

In another discount brokerage survey confirming that Canadian do it yourself investors are turning to online resources to help manage their financial futures, TD Direct Investing recently released results of a survey it commissioned in December 2012 that explored the online habits of Canadians.   According to the TD Direct Investing survey, convenience, control and content are what online channels of information offer to Canadian investors.

For most individuals, the notion that Canadians are turning to online resources for research is probably not surprising.  In fact, earlier in 2012, BMO Investorline conducted a similar study that found Canadian online investors research in order to help make effective investment decisions.  These types of discount brokerage sponsored surveys, however, stretch back across the past decade and largely confirm one another in the observation that do it yourself investors are, in fact, doing it themselves.

Not surprisingly, if you are reading this post, you are probably part of that group of do it yourself investors that is looking online for resources they can use to help navigate the management of their personal finances.   Looking to online resources generally means having to wade through lots of opinions, in order to find quality tools and resources – something we at SparxTrading.com know all too well.

So, given that so many Canadians are going online to do their research on financial products and services, here are several tips that we can offer when looking for discount brokerage accounts and resources offered by them.

  1. Be skeptical.  Even though you don’t need to be a stick in the mud, don’t take everything you read at face value.  Ask yourself whether the “facts” presented to you by writers, advertisers, surveys or other sites support the claims they make – i.e. “what makes someone the best discount brokerage?”
  2. Ask how the writer/source is compensated.  Many independent blogs or writers online earn their living by the quality of their content – usually by advertising dollars.  Others, however, have affiliate relationships or are clearly savvy marketers.  Learning the difference between them isn’t easy, however take note of whether there is a balance of perspectives presented.
  3. Take your time. Great timing is what savvy investing is all about, but stepping in for fear of missing out is the enemy of investors everywhere.  Knowing when a discount brokerage deal is actually a deal versus when it is a sales tool comes with experience and, you guessed it, research.

Comparing features, pricing and promotions are what can make you a savvier shopper when it comes to finding a discount brokerage or any financial product online.  Our comparisons sections are designed around making discount brokerage research not only easy but also value-focused.

While it does take time and effort to research online, often some research ahead of time is the best investment to avoid costly experiences and heartache in the end.  Keep your wits about you and happy hunting.

Special Series: Review of Globe and Mail’s Discount Brokerage Rankings – Part II

In part one of this series, we looked at the background of the Globe and Mail discount brokerage rankings as well as how they’re structured and who they’re targeted towards. In this next part, we take a detailed look at what the discount brokerage rankings are actually measuring and some interesting observations we made about the Canadian discount brokerage industry over time.  Lastly, we provide some important tips to keep in mind when using rankings as part of your product research.

What Do the Discount Brokerage Rankings Measure?

When looking at any ranking or rating, one of the most important questions to be clear on is what the ranking or rating is actually measuring.  In our review of the J.D. Power Investor Satisfaction Survey, we saw that “investor satisfaction” was being measured by six components: interaction, trading charges and fees, account information, account offerings, information resources and problem resolution. By comparison, the Globe and Mail discount brokerage rankings are measuring what Rob Carrick thinks is the “best discount brokerage” for “mainstream” investors.

As we saw in part one, when looking across the last eleven rankings, it appears that the categories that go into defining “the best” discount brokerage are not static. The most stable characteristics of what it means to be “the best” seem to cluster around costs, trading and tools. According to Carrick, the categories that he chooses vary in large part because they are based on a combination of data from reader surveys and his perceptions of what mainstream investors are curious about or would find worthwhile.

Strengths of the Discount Brokerage Rankings

A strength of this approach is that the discount brokerage rankings are somewhat reflective of the mood or sentiment of mainstream Canadian investors.  If investors are curious about certain features, such as commission free ETFs or user experience of a discount brokerage, the rankings have incorporated these kinds of innovations into their structure.  Having looked at a decade of results, it is fair to say that the rankings reflect the pulse of what mainstream investors are exposed to from the discount brokerage industry and hence curious about.

Limitations of the Discount Brokerage Rankings

While Rob Carrick’s opinion is certainly informed by monitoring Canadian discount brokerages for over 14 years, his opinion may not necessarily be shared by other investors, something that readers should keep in mind when doing their research.  The degree to which his opinion can be generalized rests on how accurately the needs of “mainstream investors”, a term that is loosely defined, are captured in the questions he uses to survey discount brokerages and in the process he uses to evaluate their products and services.

A second limitation of the rankings is historical comparability.  Because the criteria have changed as often as they have, it is difficult to compare historical performance of Canadian discount brokerages in a meaningful way.  It may be possible to compare results on costs, trading and tools because of their relative stability as categories however the total scores from year to year are largely incomparable.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – January 2013

ArchivedDealsHappy New Year to all of our deal hunting readers and welcome to another edition of Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions. One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions for folks is to slim down. As it turns out, the number of deals being offered by discount brokerages has also slimmed down.  Right out of the gate, we noticed that a couple of discount brokerages did not update their deals section (Scotia iTrade and Virtual Brokers) and still had posted deals that expired on December 31st, 2012.  We’ve since let them know and will update our deals section when we hear back from them. Update: as of January 7th, it appears that Scotia iTrade has updated their promotions page and extended out their 100 days of free trading offer to March 31st, 2013. Virtual Brokers has yet to update their promotional offer.

Those discount brokerages that did start off 2013 on the right foot were CIBC Investor’s Edge and Disnat, both of whom have extended out their respective promotional offers well into 2013 (and had their sites updated by Jan 1, 2013).   Interestingly, BMO Investorline‘s 150 trade offer expires on January 3rd so we’ll also be on the look out for the update on whether this deal is extended out or replaced. Update: As of January 4th, BMO Investorline has launched a new deal offering 250 free trades or 250 free trades + $250 depending on whether you deposit $100,000 or $250,000 respectively. Their advertisement might be a bit confusing as it advertises 90 days of free trades, however the fine print reveals that is actually 90 days to use up to 250 trades. It is NOT an unlimited trading offer. Be sure to read the fine print carefully as there are a number of conditions attached to this offer.

One of the big deals we’re tracking is Questrade‘s unlimited trading offer which is due to expire in mid-January.  As we mentioned in our outlook for 2013, we think that there will be more discount brokerage deals coming down the road especially now that TFSA contribution limits have been raised and because we’re headed into RRSP season.

Check back here throughout January as we get some more visibility on upcoming discount brokerage deals, promos and special offers for 2013.

TD Waterhouse Discount Brokerage is now TD Direct Investing

It looks like TD Waterhouse Discount Brokerage has recently rolled out its new name: TD Direct Investing. With the new name TD Direct Investing comes a much more user-friendly layout to their website, and many more pictures of smiley happy people.

After waves of reports and surveys about investors requiring added support and educational resources, it seems like TD’s response is to simplify access to the large amount of material they have developed for self-directed investors.

Screenshot of TD Direct Investing’s website – Dec. 20/2012

Gone are the overpoweringly excessive green and orange tabs and pages.  Instead cleaner shades of green and grey, mixed in with crisp fonts and ample use of white space have made the site far easier to navigate and read. The front end of their website now provides easy login access to WebBroker, three choices for individuals to access information depending on whether one is “new to online investing”, “an experienced investor” or “an advanced trader”.  Simplified website – check.

Scrolling further down the page, there are four simple categories mixed in with ample adjectives.  Your choices are investor education, knowledgeable support, powerful trading platforms and tools, and competitive fees. Despite sounding a bit super-hero like, rather than having to be a super-hero to find the information, the new layout makes finding things incredibly intuitive.

While filled with great promise at the investor education section and the investment seminars, the excitement quickly fizzled after clicking on the links to “find seminars near you” which took us back to the duo-tone green layout and semi-functional .pdf listing of seminars. Undeterred, we doubled back to check out more of the education section.

The “investor education” is a very well presented section. There are four interesting videos that made it to the landing page. On closer inspection, however, only four of the many videos are accessible directly from this page, and when clicking on any one of the videos, the user is taken back to the “green version” of the website.  While not terrible, I’m sure there’s work to be done to make that experience simpler than it is now.  The guides on options trading, mutual funds and fixed income looked promising however, they pointed back to some of the existing content that was less than engaging to read in the old-layout.

The re-branding exercise to go from TD Waterhouse Discount Brokerage to the shorter TD Direct Investing will take some time to catch on.  Credit should be given where it is due, and so while there is still some work that needs to be done on their website, the new look and feel of the TD Direct Investing website are certainly far easier to navigate and find information on than the previous version. To visit the new site, click here.
