Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – November 30, 2020

Hard to believe but the end of 2020 is almost here. Then again, a lot of what’s happening is surreal. With stock markets continuing to rise alongside COVID numbers, and increasingly tightening restrictions here in Canada to try to wrestle the virus into control, it’s hard to believe there is good news to be found. Fortunately, hope springs eternal, and while there are definitely some challenging times ahead, we’re glad to be able to share a slate of stories of things to look forward to from online brokers.

In this month-end edition of the Roundup, we take stock of the activities that stood out in November – including the influx of deals and promotions for DIY investors. Staying on theme, we also dive into some important developments and exciting publications set to launch at SparxTrading.com that will shine a spotlight on the challenging year that was and how online brokerages overcame multiple challenges to deliver a record-breaking year. Being the month end, there’s a special addition, which includes coverage of some interesting things that crossed our radar that we didn’t get a chance to dive into more deeply this month. As always, we’ve got chatter and banter from DIY investors in the forums and from Twitter.

Days of Our Deals: Online Brokerages Lean Into Deals in November

It’s fitting that on Cyber Monday we get to talk about deals and promotions for DIY investors.

November has been filled with a constant stream of deals updates, as almost all Canadian discount brokerages either stepped back into the deals pool or dove in for the first time.

With nine advertised deals now in the commission-free trade or cash-back category (10 if you include the latest deal from Wealthsimple Trade), online investors are able to pick and choose which deal best suits their needs.

For anyone keeping score at home, within the first week we saw offers from BMO InvestorLine, BMO SmartFolio, CIBC Investor’s Edge, and TD Direct Investing come to market. Not far behind them came offers from Scotia iTrade and RBC Direct Investing. Finally, at the end of the month, we saw Wealthsimple Trade jump into the deals and promotions pool with a clever cash-back promotion.

At the time of publication of this Roundup, it appears that there is one promotion set to expire – the commission-free trade offer from National Bank Direct Brokerage – however, that might change heading into a new week. Not to worry, though, as there are numerous offers that are scheduled to be around until well into RRSP season, which ends at the beginning of March 2021.

Even though we’ve said this before, it is worth stating again. This massive influx of deals activity was a far cry from the promotional landscape we saw midway through 2020 when almost all Canadian discount brokerages removed their “top-tier” promotional offers.

The pullback in offering deals was largely the result of a tsunami of investors trying to get into the markets to take advantage of the COVID-induced volatility, and though COVID is still around, it appears that substantial market swings are not. The pace of investors opening up new accounts has also slowed down compared to the spring of 2020, which, according to some industry insiders, is a welcome reprieve.

As for the Canadian discount brokerages currently on the deals and promotions sidelines, we suspect they won’t be there for too much longer. The space is far too competitive at this point not to be actively courting DIY investors with an offer. The question is more when than if the brokerages currently not offering either a commission-free trade or cash-back promotion will step forward.

One theme that is clear this year is that there appears to be a greater degree of targeting of specific investor segments going on than in years past. As is usually the case, big assets are what all online brokerages aspire to attract. However, outside of that group, there is a definite interest in the entry-point investor.

With the big deal days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the books, it appears that the stretch between here and Christmas could bring with it a few bonus gifts for DIY investors.

Lots to Still Look Forward To in 2020

It’s been a storied year for everyone. For DIY investors, there have been once-in-a-generation opportunities to get into stocks that were panic-sold as well as to jump into stocks that have surged as a result of the shift to working from home.

All Canadian online brokerages were tested in multiple ways during and because of COVID, from having to be able to process the flood of applications for new accounts, to shifting operations and personnel to a remote-work model, to dealing with the ongoing challenges of the marketplace that demanded more features at lower commission prices.

Though there were certainly hiccups along the way, in hindsight, the Canadian online brokerage industry managed to weather an exceptionally challenging storm.

For that reason (and the fact that it is 2020), we thought it would be fascinating to hear from the leaders of Canadian online brokerages themselves, so we invited them to participate in our soon-to-be-released Look Back/Look Ahead series.

In this upcoming edition, readers will learn a lot about what 2020 has meant for various Canadian online brokerages, including the challenges they have faced (and overcome) as well as the opportunities for innovation that presented themselves during the year.

In addition to talking about the past, one of the most interesting features of this year’s Look Back/Look Ahead series is what online brokerages have shared about what they’re working on and what online investors can expect from them in the coming year. Stay tuned for our official launch announcement on Sparx’s social media channels.

And, speaking of fun things to look forward to, we’re still working away at the launch of a new Sparx Trading digital experience.

Our new website will feature streamlined organization and powerful new tools to help online investors looking for online brokerages. Exclusive sneak peeks will be shared on the Sparx Trading Twitter feed as well as featured in the Weekly Roundup.

Lightning Roundup: More Interesting Developments

With so much happening this past month, it’s tough to cover all of the interesting developments in as much detail as we’d like to. So, here’s a quick rundown of things that crossed our radar.

Lots of Outages, Lots of Outrage

Twitter is generally a place where discussions can get heated, and people don’t hold back on what they’re thinking or feeling. In fact, it’s arguably THE place online to vent/share just that. For businesses (like online brokerages), however, in addition to being a place where clients share their experiences, there’s also an expectation of channels like Twitter to serve as a customer service channel.

November has been an abysmal month for many DIY investors across multiple Canadian online brokerages because of platform outages and downtime that occurred during trading hours at big bank-owned online brokerages and smaller operations alike. Many active investors found themselves ranting about outages as well as scary wait times to speak to customer service representatives.

For all of the good, the bad, and the (much) ugly, check out the tweets of the week from November in each of our Roundups.

Financial Literacy Month

November is Financial Literacy Month in Canada, and this past month marked the 10th anniversary of this initiative, which is aimed at helping Canadians be better informed about their personal finances.

There was a steady stream of content as well as activities online for individuals wanting to deepen their understanding of important financial topics. Interestingly, there were a lot of credit unions, independent personal financial bloggers, federal agencies or entities, and provincial securities regulators who were visible on social media.

When it came to investing – in particular DIY investing – there wasn’t much in the way of dedicated content from Canadian online brokerages, despite the wealth of information they have on hand or have historically provided about the way in which online investing works. It seems like an interesting opportunity to have more of a voice on an important issue that would enhance the general public’s understanding of what online brokerages are and how they function.

One telling gap in the current state of awareness and communication around financial services options for investors is highlighted in the introductory stock market video produced by the Nova Scotia Securities Commission.

This video series does a great job explaining the basics of stocks, but when it comes to describing the options that individual investors may encounter, the fact that “robo-advisors” don’t really get mentioned shows there are things consumers encounter in the world of investing online that don’t quite match up to what is being explained in this video. Granted, the video focuses on stocks (rather than ETFs), but given the popularity of these instruments and that they pull investors into trading online, it might be a great follow-up video to provide for investors.

Despite the wealth of information (pun intended) on personal finance that has been shared during Financial Literacy Month, there are still lots of opportunities for either online brokerages or other members of the online investing ecosystem to step forward with more investor-friendly content.

Discount Brokerage Tweets of the Week

Into the Close

If you’ve managed to survive the gauntlet of Black Friday and Cyber Monday advertisements and email promotions, congratulations! With the holidays now less than a month away, investors will have more than just visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads – tax-loss selling deadlines are now looming, and there are bound to be some stocks that investors would love to leave behind as much as they would 2020. Of course, for the bargain hunters, there are also opportunities to peruse the deep-discount bin. Maybe there are a few more deals to be had after all. Here’s hoping you have a profitable week ahead!

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – November 16, 2020

If there’s one place where the news isn’t all bad, it’s the stock market. True to their nature, stock markets are always focused on the future, and the record highs being notched and funds flowing back into highly beaten-down names signal a view of the world that says things are likely to improve. For DIY investors, especially Canadian ones, the news continues to improve – at least for most.

In this edition of the Roundup, we take a look at a recent trading outage that negatively impacted investors trying to cash in on another historic trading day and examine how online brokers can set the record straight on system stability. Next, we review the gift that keeps on giving – deals and promotions – as more Canadian online brokerages jump into the deals race to make for an exciting run-up to RRSP season. As always, we have interesting perspectives to share from DIY investors, including forum commentary and real-time reactions to trading highs and lows on Twitter.

Volume Challenges Online Brokerages’ Trading Systems Yet Again

There’s no denying money is an emotional subject. Layer in fast-moving markets, fleeting opportunities, significant expectations about reliability, relatively high commission pricing, and online trading screeching to a halt, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for some serious online brokerage “haterade.”

This past week was déjà vu all over again when stock markets moved substantially higher on the news of the vaccine from Pfizer and the prospect of a clear winner to the US presidential election. The heightened enthusiasm, however, ended up translating into a surge of trading volume on stock exchanges across North America and, sadly, some online brokerage systems were unprepared for the volume.

In the US and in Canada, several noteworthy online brokerages suffered trading outages at the worst possible moment, leaving many investors angry and sidelined from making (or saving) considerable money. TD Ameritrade, Schwab, and Fidelity were among the big names in the US online brokerage space that were reporting issues with users being able to access their online trading accounts on Monday.

In Canada, some DIY investors were also greeted with a bad case of the Mondays. According to reports from users on Twitter, Questrade and Scotia iTrade suffered outages that impacted traders on Monday morning, sending users into a fury that made for some disconcerting reading on Twitter.

Massive volatility in stock markets is not something new, and, in fact, it is something many online brokerages had already been bracing for in the lead-up to the US presidential election. For DIY investors, however, it is understandably frustrating, perhaps infuriating, when online brokerages go offline or have technical issues because of increased trading activity.

Interestingly, only one online brokerage in Canada, Wealthsimple Trade, has taken it upon themselves to proactively report and disclose issues regarding their trading systems on a separate, dedicated website. By automating this disclosure, it provides some measure of access to situations where trading systems are impacted – so users aren’t completely in the dark about what’s going on. More impactful, however, by making this disclosure public, DIY investors can also see for themselves just how “reliable” the trading system is.

For example, from September through November 15th, Wealthsimple Trade reports their trading system was up 99.89% of the time – something users can verify for themselves. It is worth noting that there were no outages reported on their systems status page on November 9th, the date that other online brokerage systems went down.

Going forward, investor patience for outages that take place at online brokerages will be very limited. The fact that “new kid on the block” Wealthsimple Trade can do so almost begs the question as to why other, larger, better-resourced firms that are competing with Wealthsimple Trade haven’t or won’t disclose this data. Seems fitting for a challenger brand.

That said, the majority of online brokerages are likely up and running without issue for most of the year. Having a site that objectively reports this uptime profile is much more likely to communicate what reality is versus what the subjective and emotional impressions are of the reliability of a platform. If an online investor is doing their homework into the stability and reliability of an online brokerage (and those burned by outages before likely will), then it seems like a bad idea to have the only record of system function be the trail of angry tweets that inevitably highlight when things go wrong instead of a site that communicates how often they got it right.

Big Deals Keep on Turning

If there’s one thing November can lock in its reputation for, it’s ushering in deals and promotions. From Singles’ Day to Black Friday, millions of shoppers around the world look forward to this month to get access to savings, and so too do Canadian DIY investors.

This past week saw three more offers come to market. Two of those promotions came from big bank-owned online brokerages, RBC Direct Investing and Scotia iTrade, which launched a commission-free trade and a combo, cash-back and commission-free trade deal, respectively. The third offer, courtesy of Virtual Brokers, was a discounted commission offer.

Compared to earlier this year, when Questrade was the sole online broker in Canada offering up promotions for new accounts, the sharp increase in promotions this month alone is cause for optimism for DIY investors who are interested in opening an online trading account.

Looking more closely at the new deals to cross the wire, the RBC Direct Investing commission-free trade offer is more of a “classic” than a new offer. They are bringing back a popular offer they have had for a few years that consists of 25 commission-free equity trades that are valid to use for up to a year from the time of account opening. The perks of this offer are the low threshold to qualify, a deposit of $5,000, and the long timeframe in which to use these commission-free trades. At a standard commission rate of $9.95, the equivalent value of the offer is just shy of $250.

By comparison, Scotia iTrade also leaned into a familiar strategy in offering up the choice to investors of accessing either a cash-back promotion or commission-free trades. The combined nature of this offer makes it one of the more interesting promotions currently in play among Canadian online brokerages. To further enhance the value, the discounted commission rate of $6.99 per trade equates to a 30% discount on the standard commission fee until June 30, 2021.

To see how the Scotia iTrade offer truly stacks up, however, it is worth comparing it to the other cash-back promotions currently in play.

Deposit TierBMO InvestorLineCIBC Investor’s EdgeScotia iTradeTD Direct Investing
$5,000$25
$10,000$50$50
$15,000$100
$25,000$100$100$200
$50,000$100$200$200
$100,000$250$500$400$300
$250,000$450$750$500
$500,000$950$1,000$1,000$1,000
$1M+$2,000$2,000$1,500

The first thing that jumps out about the cash-back offer from Scotia iTrade is that the minimum deposit threshold is lower than that of any of their peers. At $5,000 to qualify for a $25 cash-back bonus, there are no other offers in this range that would compete.

As we reviewed last week, there are certain deposit tiers that it is clear online brokerages appear to be most interested in targeting. In the case of Scotia iTrade, the segment where they (and they alone) have the highest offer is between $250K and $500K, with an offer of $750 cash-back. Their cash-back offer is also tied for top spot at the $50K deposit level with CIBC Investor’s Edge, with both of these online brokers offering $200. Similarly, Scotia iTrade is in a three-way tie for top offer of $1,000 cash-back at the $500K to $1M deposit range.

When it comes to the commission-free trade comparison picture, however, Scotia iTrade’s promotion is unique in that it is the only online brokerage (at the moment) to use tiered deposits to qualify for higher quantities of commission-free trades. And, beyond deposits of $100K, it is the only online brokerage offering commission-free trades of greater than 100 trades. That said, currently National Bank Direct Brokerage has, hands down, the highest commission-free trade offer, with 100 trades and no deposit minimum required to qualify.

Of the offers that have come to market thus far, Scotia iTrade is the most versatile of the bank-owned brokerages. It spans the widest range of deposit tiers, from $5K through to $1M+. It has a combined discounted commission and cash-back or commission-free trade offering. And, the bonus offers can be combined with their existing referral program, which means that there is an opportunity for extra cash-back or free trades to be added onto either of the base-free-trade or cash-back promotion offers.

Finally, a different category of deal that was launched this month was from Virtual Brokers. This offer waives the minimum spend per trade of $1.99, which is a part of the standard commission price structure. Interestingly, this offer does not apply to odd-lot trades – defined specifically by Virtual Brokers according to the price of the security. Also, this offer is available only until the end of December 2020, and in order to maximize savings from this offer, investors would likely be trading securities priced at $1 or more (likely significantly higher than $1).

As predicted, November has been a watershed month for DIY investors looking for a deal to open a new online investing or trading account. With market volatility likely to stay elevated (if last week is any indication), there will undoubtedly be interest from investors who are still on the sidelines or who are contemplating other account types (or moving online brokerages) to kick the tires on these offers. There are still a handful of online brokerages that have yet to jump into the deals pool, but we anticipate there to be at least one or two more offers coming to market before November ends.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – November 2020

*Update: November 27* Daylight isn’t the only thing being saved this as we enter the month of November. It seems like DIY investors are also in for some savings too.

Like adjusting the clocks back, it’s going to take some getting used to online investing in November. With the US presidential election likely to shape the rest of the month, online brokers and investors alike are uncertain as to what the fallout will be.

Heading into a new month there is a mixed picture for promotional offers. On a down note, the 60-day commission-free trade offer from HSBC InvestDirect concluded at the end of October. On the plus side, however, Questrade rolled back the clock on inactivity fees, taking them back to zero. While technically not a promotion, it is a piece of good news for DIY investors looking to park their money without penalty.

Another bit of good news for DIY investors is November is historically a big month for online brokerage offers coming to market. We expect that several big names will be launching new offers in anticipation of RRSP season and the heightened activity around TFSAs and markets heading into the end of the year.

So, don’t forget to check back throughout the month for any updates. The US election is expected to heavily impact investor behaviour and in turn, the discount brokerage space. As always, we’ll continue to monitor and provide new developments on discount brokerage promotions as they arise but if you hear about any offers that would be interesting to fellow DIY investors, feel free to drop a comment below.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – September 21, 2020

In a “normal” world, fall would be the start of the blockbuster movie launches that viewers expect to enjoy as the weather turns cooler. This, however, is the “new normal.” Instead of movies, IPOs are in the spotlight, with investors watching spectacular IPOs posting incredible numbers and driving FOMO to new heights even as tech starts to show signs of weakness.

In this edition of the Roundup, numbers take centre stage, as we review recent performance stats published by several online brokerages in the US and what it could mean for the current sentiment among Canadian online brokers. Next, we share some exclusive updates to new and exciting features coming this fall to SparxTrading.com. As always, we’ve got a great selection of interesting commentary from investors in the forums and on Twitter.

Painting by Numbers: A Portrait of the Online Investing Marketplace

It’s hard to believe but it has been already/only six months since the market meltdown and subsequent snapback in March. In crossing this milestone, there are lots of questions about how long the “rally” in stocks can continue and whether the surge in online trading has subsided or is still going strong.

This past week, and indeed this month, there have been some important trading metrics reported by US online brokerages that can shed further light into the momentum of online investing among self-directed investors.

Two big firms in the US online brokerage space, Schwab and E*Trade, reported their monthly activity metrics that showed continued strength in the interest of investors to open trading accounts, although it might be fair to say this heightened level of interest is showing signs of plateauing.

Starting first with E*Trade. The iconic online broker reported that its standard trading volume metric – daily average revenue trades (or DARTs) – was up about 2% on a month-over-month basis to 1.04 million daily trades, which is a whopping 256% higher than the same period last year. While robust trading volume was an interesting stat, what really jumped out was the surge in net new retail accounts opened in August at E*Trade, with 80,000 new accounts coming in. This represents a level 76% higher than the previous month and 439% higher than the same point last year.

The largest online brokerage in the US, Charles Schwab, also saw its trading volume and new account numbers stay elevated – although nowhere near the percentage performance posted by E*Trade. For August, Schwab had amassed $4.5 trillion (with a t) in total client assets and saw a gain of 202,000 new online brokerage accounts, which is a slight dip (-2%) compared to July but still 60% higher than where new-account growth levels were at last year. Trading volume at Schwab still appeared to be significantly elevated, at 1.5 million daily average trades, which is about four times where it was for 2019.

Aside from E*Trade and Schwab, other large firms in the US that report their trading activity metrics regularly include Ameritrade and Interactive Brokers. Interestingly, this past August, the privately held Robinhood also reported trading metrics for the first time, in which they shared staggering figures from a record month in June. However, as of publication, no follow-up post with updated figures has been published.

Earlier this month, Interactive Brokers published its metrics, which showed DARTs were 88% higher than a year ago and new account openings were 374% higher than the same point last year.

Although several Canadian online brokerages are owned by publicly traded banks, the majority of these bank-owned brokerages do not disclose trading data at their online brokerage units in the same depth or with the same transparency as their US counterparts, with, perhaps, one important exception, RBC Direct Investing. The financial reporting for RBC includes reporting for direct-investing trade volumes, which are reported on quarterly. The third-quarter results for their 2020 fiscal year show that trading over the period from May through July was about 125% or so higher than the same point last year.

Six months after the major lows of the stock market in March, it appears that there continues to be very robust interest from investors in participating in online trading and investing.

Across several different data points, the picture emerging is that investors are still hungry for opportunities to grow their wealth via equities, despite the recent downdraft in the tech stocks having probably rattled a few nerves. The recent performance of IPOs like Snowflake, Nuvei, and “magic mushroom” company Compass point to the fast-money crowd looking for opportunities to jump into and out of the market.

On a macro basis, the stretch between now and November, when the US presidential race will be decided (or will it?), is expected to be filled with volatility, which should only be amplified by the increased participation of so many more retail investors. Interesting data on options trading behaviour and volume, for example, points to the “lottery ticket” trade taking place, and investor forums are rife with YOLO and moon-trade talks, which also signal investors are taking outsized risks to chase potentially outsized returns.

Any experienced farmer will say make to hay while the sun shines, and any experienced investor/trader knows it’s never different this time. For online brokerages, whether in Canada or the US, being flexible is going to be key to responding to whichever scenario plays out.

Good News for 2020: Upgrades to SparxTrading.com Coming

2020 has been a year of big changes. Not many have been good, but despite the sentiment that this year should be over as quickly as possible, there are still a few months – and hopefully some good news – to come.

One piece of exciting news on our end: SparxTrading.com is going to be launching a new web experience for individuals interested in learning about and navigating all things online brokerage in Canada.

When SparxTrading.com first launched (way back in 2011, and officially in 2012), the online investing landscape was considerably different than it is today. Commissions were higher, “trading on the go” meant something very different, and finding information on online brokerages was filled with fragments of keyword- and agenda-driven content.

Since launching, we’ve chronicled the evolution of the online brokerage industry here in Canada (while keeping a keen eye on what’s happening in the US), and over that time we’re glad to report that many of the things that we saw as gaps for DIY investors have either started to improve or have been significantly addressed. One of those items that we saw as an issue was the absence of reliable, objective, up-to-date, and well-organized information about how to choose online brokerages.

Thankfully, there are now sites like GetSmarterAboutMoney.ca that act as credible touchpoints for investor-education basics and have the kind of support and expertise available to improve the financial literacy of Canadian investors (we also love that they share a preference for icons!). Further, there’s also a national strategy on financial literacy being championed by the federal government. And although there is lots of work still to do in educating individuals about investing, there are now some important building blocks in place.

Of course, with over a dozen online brokerages in Canada (and more on the way), there’s still a lot of confusion for consumers and DIY investors alike when it comes to investing online, which is why we’re still as excited and committed as ever to help bring clarity to the landscape. We’re extremely proud to have impacted tens of thousands of Canadian DIY investors who have referenced our simple but effective site as part of their journey into or through online investing.

More immediately, we’re also really excited to be launching a new edition of our Look Back/Look Ahead series, featuring exclusive content and insights from Canada’s online brokerages. This has been an unprecedented year in so many ways, so it will be fascinating to see how different online brokers have fared and what they have their sights set on for 2021. We’ve already got a great response from the industry and look forward to sharing what they have to say about what has been an eventful year.

Finally, over the coming weeks, we will be making some changes in preparation for the rollout of our new digital experience, so be sure to stay tuned to our Twitter account for early previews of features and content.

Here’s hoping that despite the negative news out there in 2020, SparxTrading.com can spark something positive to look forward to in the coming months.

Into the Close

Life in the markets primes you for volatility. Even so, sometimes the pull of gravity on the way down is undeniable. Once again, 2020 has claimed a beacon of hope, with the passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The shockwave of this event will undoubtedly be felt for weeks to come and will overshadow an already contentious state of affairs in America. Of course, experience in the market also teaches that there is nothing quite as powerful as hope to fuel ambitious change. Stay rational, stay measured, and here’s hoping for some positive progress to start showing up soon.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – September 2020

*Update: September 18* Although it feels like we’ve barely had enough time to enjoy the simple pleasures of summer this year, the end of the season is now just around the corner. As 2020 progresses, DIY investors continue to be met with market volatility. In fact, as we release this month’s discount brokerage deals and promotions update, stock market indices are continuing their push into record territory.

Despite September’s chillier weather, the Canadian online brokerage space appears to be heating up this month. After a few quiet months devoid of new promotions, Canadian discount brokers have recently begun to gradually unveil new deals, signaling the return of some sense of “normalcy” in the world of discount brokerages.

Heading into this month, a pair of new commission-free trade offers from two bank-owned discount brokerages have appeared on our radar. Scroll on to learn more about these recently launched promotions, as well as other deals that are currently being offered by Canadian discount brokerages.

Be sure to check back throughout September, as we continue to monitor and provide updates on new discount brokerage deals. Here’s hoping these updates will keep you warm as the fall season approaches!

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – August 2020

*Update: August 18* With everything that’s happened over the last few months, 2020 has simultaneously felt like the longest and the shortest year ever.

Time isn’t the only thing that the COVID-19 pandemic has distorted. Despite the biggest economic shock in memory (and on record), stock markets and retail investor behaviour have also distorted how discount brokerages are viewing promotions at this time. Specifically, the retail investor trading frenzy in stock markets may be directly behind why Canadian online brokerages haven’t felt the need to boost business by adding any new promotions for August.

In fact, as we head into the latter stretch of the summer, we’ve taken note of further erosion of deals activity. Qtrade Investor, for example, withdrew their referral promotion – a point of particular significance when considering how effective these deal types are when trying to control the cost of acquisition of new clients.

So, for DIY investors looking for a promotion this August, the current slate of offers represents the “new normal” – at least to start the month. Most of the deals are for transfer fee coverage promotions, and for those looking for commission-free trading offers, Questrade appears to have the spotlight to themselves.

Scroll down to learn about the current offerings from Canadian discount brokerages. And wherever you happen to be this month, try to stay cool.

As always, we will keep monitoring for new discount brokerage deals and add updates as they appear, so make sure to check back throughout the month.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – July 13, 2020

With COVID-19 very much in focus, it appears that time is being measured more in phases and case counts than in actual calendar days or traditional time. Despite the uncertainty (or perhaps as a result of it), discount brokerages in Canada find themselves in a unique position to learn from what is happening in the US to plot out the next important steps to take in the second half of 2020.

In this edition of the Roundup, we pull out the telescope to peer into the second half of 2020 and see what interesting data points from investors and online brokerages could provide insights into what to expect from Canadian discount brokerages in the remainder of the year. From there, we recognize the bold decision that one bank-owned online brokerage has taken to include an often-overlooked group and hope that this is the start of a new design choice among brokerages going forward. As always, we’ll wrap up with chatter from DIY investors on Twitter and in the investor forums.

The Next Chapter: Where Might Canadian Online Brokerages Go Next

With the first half of 2020 now well behind us, it’s time to start looking ahead at what trends could impact online brokerages here in Canada and in the US.

It almost goes without saying that the biggest force still at work is COVID-19, followed by the US presidential election.  And, while there is justifiable cause for alarm at the human toll of this crisis, the giant voting machine that is the stock market is placing its bets that though things might be bad, the future (at least for some sectors) stands to be brighter than it is today.

For US online brokerages, the heightened uncertainty in the stock market should translate into continued earnings strength from commissions (for those that charge them), payment for order flow, and margin interest. The historically low interest rates suggest that the cost of borrowing for margin trading (to amplify results) will be, on a relative basis, more affordable. In sum, the macro picture for online brokerages in the US appears to be bullish, as investors continue to wade into the volatility rather than shy away from it.

Among Canadian discount brokerages, the thesis supporting robust performance appears to be similar. Strong trading volumes combined with trading commissions holding steady mean that online brokerages are going to be generating healthy revenues, and for Canadian banks (those that have online brokerage arms), this could be an important bright spot against a backdrop of challenging economic conditions. Across Twitter, the comments over the past few months by Canadian DIY investors reflect heightened enthusiasm for making fast money, as well as the tools/platforms and user experience to facilitate doing so. As such, active trading platforms – along with associated data feed packages – have likely seen record levels of interest, and brokerages that don’t currently have these features in place are likely losing the patience or the business of clients who wish to keep a very tight pulse on the market.

For the better part of this year so far, Canadian online brokerages have been surprisingly quiet when it comes to advertising campaigns or major feature release announcements. As we referenced in last week’s Roundup, it is unlikely that the final half of 2020 will see Canadian brokerages maintain their “wait and see” approach – there are simply too many important opportunities at stake.

Some interesting data out of the US online brokerage market also seems to support the macro case for Canadian brokerages either ramping up advertising to close out 2020 or seriously considering doing so.

One of the first important indicators of this is a recent sentiment survey by E*Trade Financial, released last week. In that survey, it found that in Q3 of 2020, bullishness among DIY investors has increased 34% (13 percentage points) compared to Q2 of 2020. Importantly, over half of investors (51%) believe that markets will rise through the end of the year – a remarkable feat considering how much markets have rallied from their March lows.

Another interesting factor for online brokerages in Canada to consider (though this data point also originated in the US) is a comment regarding online investing made by Interactive Brokers founder Thomas Peterffy in an interview with Bloomberg. Specifically, Peterffy pointed out that even once the pandemic stabilizes, the interest in online investing has likely been sparked in many investors who will want to continue. In other words, the die has been cast for the return and prominence of active online investors. For Interactive Brokers in particular, Peterffy highlighted that unlike with Robinhood, the clients of Interactive Brokers tend to be more sophisticated in nature, with a better understanding of what they want and how to manoeuvre around various market opportunities.

From a macro perspective, the US market heading into the second half of the year will also provide some important information regarding the consolidation of players on the field. On July 21st, online brokerage Charles Schwab will provide their summer update and likely include information about the progress of their acquisition of TD Ameritrade. Incidentally, Interactive Brokers is also announcing their earnings on the same date. The Schwab/Ameritrade merger will create a behemoth in the online brokerage space in the US, something that appears to be necessary to fend off a growing number of competitors. Other deals on the radar in the latter half of 2020 include the acquisition between Morgan Stanley and E*Trade.

On the technology front, it will also be interesting to see what US online brokerages roll out in the near term that may influence how Canadian online brokerages ultimately decide to deploy the historic revenues they are generating from trading activity.

One clear winner for online brokerages in the US has been fractional share trading – something that has ignited interest by younger investors to participate in the stock market in record numbers. Another interesting feature gaining traction is investor-oriented content. Online brokerage Robinhood has clearly put significant effort into their podcast, and it is gaining momentum with their target demographic. Almost all major US online brokerages have robust online/digital content strategies, and the brokerages making outsized gains have clearly demonstrated the value of these during the COVID-19 pandemic. By comparison, online investor content among most Canadian online brokerages is extremely limited, static, and often inaccessible.

Already, Canadian DIY investors on Twitter are calling out Canadian online brokerages for features that exist in the US but do not exist here – whether that be zero-commission trading, fractional shares, innovative technology, or incredible DIY investor content. Seeing as how three of those four options would require massive technology investment or significant revenue erosion, one likely battleground for DIY investors in the next half of 2020 will be in content.

RBC Direct Investing: A More Inclusive Approach

One of the unique consequences of covering the Canadian online brokerage market in detail for almost a decade is that you get to see how the market has evolved over that time. This past week, we spotted a small but important detail on the RBC Direct Investing website that we hope signals a shift in the way in which online investors are depicted.

Specifically, on the RBC Direct Investing website, an image of an individual in a wheelchair was positioned alongside the caption “I Want to Be a Confident Investor.” In the almost-decade-long coverage of the Canadian online brokerage space and the scores upon scores of generic business imagery placed on the front pages of DIY investing websites, it would be difficult to identify at any point the inclusion of a person with a disability on the homepage. It is certainly worth commending RBC Direct Investing for doing so in this case, even though the inclusion is not in the main image (yet). The reality is that persons with disabilities get little to no recognition or acknowledgement in the often “aspirational” imagery associated with online brokerage websites.

For that reason, RBC Direct Investing deserves a significant “hats off” for being (probably) the first major online brokerage in Canada to be more inclusive in their imagery choices, by including a person with a visible disability. Here’s hoping it inspires other online brokerages to do the same.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – July 6, 2020

Whether it’s the first or fourth of July, where and how you might have celebrated depends in large part on where you happen to find yourself.

In this edition of the Roundup, we keep things short and sweet, like a great helping of soft-serve ice cream. First, we take a peek at the deals and promotions for July and see how they differ from June. Next, we scroll on over to the launch of an updated mobile app for a leading Canadian online broker. As always, there’s lots to ponder from the investor forums as well as from Twitter.

New Month, Same Deals

With the second half of 2020 now officially underway, there are lots of questions investors and online brokerages are asking as far as what the rest of the year holds for investing online. One of the biggest questions is around volatility and whether the trading volumes that were the norm in the first part of the year will continue to feature prominently into the end of 2020.

As has been covered extensively through the Weekly Roundup since March, volatility in stock markets has also pushed up trading volumes to record-breaking levels. The prevailing theory is that the combination of individuals being forced to shelter in place, the absence of sports betting, and the distribution of government support payments have all converged into a perfect storm of retail investors flooding into the market to try to take advantage of some kind of rally in heavily battered stock prices.

The knock-on effect of all of this, however, has been that interest in opening an online trading account at an online brokerage has been so strong that most Canadian online brokerages have opted to shelve their promotions for the summer. In the most important deal categories to DIY investors (cash-back or commission-free trades), Questrade has become the sole online brokerage with active promotions.

Crossing the threshold into the latter half of the year, it is hard to imagine Canadian online brokerages standing on the sidelines for much longer before jumping back into the promotions race.

First, Questrade represents an increasingly tough competitor for other Canadian discount brokerages to defend against. Whether it is in investor forums, TV commercials, or social media, there’s a good chance that new investors looking for an online brokerage are going to run into mentions or even recommendations for Questrade. By leaving Questrade unchallenged, other online brokerages are enabling this already popular brokerage to build market share and attract investors to a conversation about investing.

Second, should any of the factors that caused the rush of investors looking to set up accounts abate, discount brokerages would almost certainly have to aggressively ramp up their marketing efforts – including adding promotions. To further challenge the financial services space as a whole in Canada, several large Canadian banks have also elected to pause their advertising on Facebook. Unless Facebook remedies their enforcement of curbing hate speech, it will be a challenge for online brokers to find a way to scale up their messaging and advertising during COVID-19.

Finally, the end of the year is typically when the ramp-up to RRSP-contribution season starts. Layer in a year in which there is almost certainly going to be a good portion of tax-loss selling and realizing of capital gains, TFSA maneuvering, and more, and DIY investors will be doing a lot more with their accounts through the end of this year. Of course, in order for online investors to want to stick with their current brokerage, it means the service experience at online brokerages has to be very good, and right now, based on comments from Twitter, there aren’t a lot of good customer service stories for Canadian discount brokerages.

It’s clear that nobody can fully predict the scale and scope of how COVID-19 will unfold in Canada or the US. Tied to that uncertainty is the business need to attract new clients via marketing and incentives. As the rest of the economy in Canada starts to fire up again, and people begin to come out of isolation, so too, hopefully, will the Canadian discount brokerage deals.

Teaching an Old App New Tricks – TD Direct Investing Launches Updated App

When mobile investing apps first arrived, they were heralded as the future for individual investors to gain even more freedom when wanting to trade, whether in line at Starbucks or hanging out poolside with a drink in one hand and a phone in the other. Mobile trading was truly going to be the next “big thing” with DIY investing. Arguably, now that apps and being able to do just about everything on a mobile device have become the norm, that sentiment of trading almost entirely by mobile app is closer to the original vision.

In June, TD Direct Investing unveiled the latest updates to their mobile app, which focused on investor education. TD Direct Investing’s mobile app now provides access to their online learning centre, which is filled with content to help investors get up to speed on a number of topics related to investing.

Among the more interesting capabilities is the ability to cast video lessons directly to TV – something that could offer up that perfect balance of autoplay TV series and educational content.

Of course, TD isn’t the only one that has conducted a refresh or added features to their mobile trading app this year. Virtual Brokers and RBC Direct Investing are the others. Thus, it seems like multiple Canadian discount brokerage who haven’t yet worked on improving their current app design/build will be busy figuring out how to build a mobile app for the current world.

With summer now upon us, it is the perfect opportunity both to learn about investing and investments as well as to be out and about. The latest wave of mobile upgrades at TD Direct Investing enables users to do both.

Into the Close

That’s a wrap on a shortened-week edition of the Roundup. Markets continue to power higher (for now), which means that there are many DIY investors on the sidelines hoping to still get in on the action. Of course, with professional sports starting to come back online, we’re betting we will start to see fewer “traders” and a restart of the world of financial promotions. Oh, and there’s now Kanye to add into the mix.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – July 2020

*Update: July 28* Summer has finally arrived, and what a strange summer it’s shaping up to be! This word has been used a lot in the last few months, but it continues to be the word of the moment: unprecedented.

With the whole world – and the stock market – venturing into uncharted territory, it’s impossible to know what, exactly, the second half of 2020 holds in store.

Despite ongoing fluctuations in the stock market, online brokerages are continuing to see a high level of interest from DIY investors. Like their US counterparts, Canadian discount brokerages have been opening huge numbers of new accounts. This may explain why several brokerages haven’t felt the need to add any new deals or promotions for the month of July.

Regardless, there are still many ongoing deals and promotions to entice savvy DIY investors. Scroll on to review the current offerings from Canadian discount brokerages.

As always, Sparx Trading will add any updates as they appear, so be sure to check back throughout the month.
