Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – September 13, 2013

Welcome to the Friday the 13th edition of the discount broker weekly roundup.  It’s been an exciting week in the markets as news of the widely anticipated Twitter IPO became official.  This week, I’ll provide some highlights of fee drops and deal announcements that took place, followed up by a couple of interesting forum on discount broker costs.  Finally, there are a couple of examples of how “social media” is being used by discount brokerages/financial firms to connect with Canadians interested in investing.

Fee Information Gets No RESP(ect)

Earlier this week, I wrote a piece on CIBC Investor’s Edge and how they’ve waived the annual fee for the RESP for balances under $15,000.  As a quick heads up, neither the fee schedule nor the commission page have been updated as yet, however the announcement does appear on their home page.

Deal Updates

RBC Direct Investing also just recently jumped onto the deals and promotions bandwagon by offering 25 commission-free trades that can be used for up to a year.  Their marketing strategy of being able “trade free for a year” is definitely catchy however be sure to read the fine print.  To see how this offer stacks up against other discount brokerage deals, click here.

In the Forums

Forum activity has been picking up recently, with investors looking to other investors for their thoughts on market direction and particular stocks.  Along with the increase in market interest, there were a couple of discount brokerage related questions that came up about the costs at Questrade.

In this first post on Canadian Money Forum, a mini-debate was touched off by Questrade’s recent announcement to its clients that it would be raising its options assignment/exercise fee to $24.95 (flat) from $12.95.

Forum Post on Questrade Option Assignment Fee

The following post on RedFlagDeals.com, there was some clarification required on the actual interest rates for margin accounts.  While the original poster had their answer clarified, the follow up post shed light that Questrade’s margin interest rates are not, in fact, as cheap as other discount brokerages.  This is a good example of why it is important to understand all of the costs associated with choosing a discount brokerage and whether some tradeoffs on price make sense for the style of trading that is anticipated.

Investors and Social Media

A recent survey commissioned by BMO InvestorLine showed that investors may not find social media as reliable as “traditional media” when it comes to investing information.  Intriguing as the results were, there are more results daily of the shift in media towards the new channels, such as Twitter, Facebook and others.  The following examples from this week’s roundup seem to suggest that social media is something investors and Canadian discount brokerages, are starting to embrace more fully.

From FaceBook

While it might be hard to imagine Facebook being a source of investment information, the following example of funny video from TD shows how TD is leveraging Facebook as a way to connect with investors in their “TD Helps” forum

From Twitter

Twitter is awash in content being provided by various discount brokerages. While there is often an incentive to try and direct traffic to the brand, online brokers such as National Bank Direct Brokerage, have used Twitter to connect visitors to educational content. And they’re not alone, brokerages on Twitter such as Scotia iTrade and Virtual Brokers are also doing the same, albeit to different degrees.

As these major brands migrate more of their content onto social media channels, users may find it ‘easier’ to trust the channel if they begin to trust the personalities present on them.

That’s it for this edition of the roundup, hope everyone has a spectacular weekend!

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – September 6, 2013

With the end of the first week in September, there was certainly lots of news around the globe and in the markets to keep investors on the edge of their seats.  Within the discount broker space, there were some noteworthy deal extensions that showed up late into week one of September.  From the investor side of the fence, metrics on trading activity continue to look encouraging for retail participation and investors debate the offerings from some popular discount brokerages. Finally, there are a couple of updates/reminders for discount brokerage related events taking place over the weekend.

Deal Extensions

This past week, BMO InvestorLine decided to extend their Air Miles promotion deadline through to the end of September. While either an extension or a new deal was anticipated, it was interesting to see the deadline for the deal get pushed back for just 3 more weeks.   By comparison, Scotia iTrade decided to extend their 100 commission-free trade offer until November 25th.  To find out more about the latest updates and other discount brokerage deals for the month, click here.

Trading Activity Continues to Rise

With a new month comes the data on trading volumes supplied by Interactive Brokers for their previous month. In the latest results, trading volumes and customer accounts were both up on a yearly and monthly basis.  Their recent earnings report also cited improved trading activity among clients which continues to confirm investors are coming back to stock markets.

Discussions about Discount Broker Fees

Chatter on the forums this week featured some interesting threads about discount brokerages. When it comes to discount brokerages, one of the popular points with investors is fees. This discussion on the RedFlagDeals forum was an interesting look at comparing TD Direct Investing with Questrade and shows that price and perceived value are not the same thing.

In a second forum, the Financial WebRing, this post contained some interesting perspectives about opening an account with BMO InvestorLine and about getting a better deal when opening an account.

Updates

Questrade announced will be releasing a minor software update to their IQ edge platform this weekend. For more details on the update click here.

Reminder

Options Education Day takes place in Montreal this weekend. Several discount brokerages are sponsors of the event and should be there to answer questions about trading options on their platforms.  For more information about the event, click here.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – September 2013

ArchivedDealsUpdated Sept. 20/13

September is here, and with it comes a number of deal extensions from Canadian discount brokerages.  Going into the home stretch of the calendar year, several factors might be at play that explain why there are more ‘extensions’ of deals than new deals appearing just yet.

First, a number of financial firms that have their year-end (mostly at the October 31st mark) which means some firms might want to figure out marketing plans (and budgets) based on the year’s performance and market conditions. In other words, it might be a bit of coasting as far as deals are concerned until the results from the year are tallied up.

Another important factor is that stock market activity (and therefore investor activity) tends to pick up at the tail end of the year. More investors in the marketplace should mean that discount brokers will be jockeying for clients. Recent history has shown, however, that investors have been reluctant to come back to stock markets and only this past year have trends started to show a return of retail investor interest.   As the retail investor landscape evolves, there may be some caution around the size of deals that will be put forward.

Lastly, several discount brokerage rankings get published within the last calendar quarter of the year including the “JD Power Investor Satisfaction Survey”, the “Online Broker Rankings” from Rob Carrick at the Globe and Mail and the Morningstar award for “Best Discount Broker”.  Marketing teams will be in ‘wait and see’ mode to respond to these popular evaluations.

Putting these pieces together, it might help account for the fact that this month there are more ‘extensions’  of several offers rather than the introduction of anything new just yet.  Also, at the time of writing this post, it is Labour Day weekend and there are still some discount brokerages who haven’t updated their offers on their websites.

Nonetheless, there are a couple of things that I’ll be on the lookout for in early September which will likely result in an update of the deals section in the early part of this month.  Most notably, the BMO InvestorLine ‘AirMiles’ deal expires September 4th so there should be either an extension or a new promotion that is coming up.*UPDATE*: BMO InvestorLine has extended the deadline for the AirMiles promotion to September 30th.

Expired Discount Brokerage Deals:

As of the publishing of this post, there were three two deals that expired at the end of August:

  • National Bank Direct Brokerage’s Margin Account deal
  • Questrade’s Unlimited trading offer
  • Scotia iTrade’s 100 commission-free trades deal  *UPDATE*: This deal has been extended until November 25th.

Of the three deals, the lapsing of Scotia iTrade’s commission-free trading offer means that Disnat and Questrade are now the two discount brokerages offering trading commission-credits. *UPDATE*: The good news is that Scotia iTrade’s commission free offer is back and such there are now three discount brokerages offering commission-credit promotions.

Extended Discount Brokerage Deals:

This month three four discount brokerages have extended several of their deals and promotions.

  • Disnat has decided to extend their $300 commission credit deal out until December 31st, 2013 and also have changed the promo code.
  • Questrade has extended their ‘100 free trade’ offer out until November 30th – note that the promo code for this deal has been changed too.
  • Questrade has also extended their ‘Advantage’ linked deal out until the end of October and also updated the promo code associated with it.
  • Scotia iTrade has extended their refer-a-friend promotion deadline out for another month to September 30th.
  • *UPDATE* – BMO InvestorLine Airmiles promotion extended out until September 30th.
  • *UPDATE* – Scotia iTrade extended 100 commission-free trade offer deadline to November 25th.

New Discount Brokerage Deals: (Updated 9/20/13)

At the outset of September there are no new deals to report however there is the deal from BMO InvestorLine that is set to expire in the first week, so there may be something new coming soon. (*UPDATE* : this deal has since been extended)

  • (Update 9/9/13) A 25 free trade deal from RBC Direct Investing has been advertised on their website; included as part of the offer is a transfer fee promo

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – August 2, 2013

As we officially launch into August, there is a lot of “behind the scenes” action that discount brokerages are up to in order to get ready for their busy season in the fall.

This week’s roundup features some updates on current discount brokerage deals, a couple of interesting upgrades to discount brokerage websites that were spotted and reports showing that investor participation in US markets continues to increase and a transaction between the owners of two major online brokerages.

Deal me in, again.

Being the beginning of the month, we have updated the discount brokerage deals section for August.  A couple of noteworthy deal extensions were spotted including an extension of the “Refer-a-Friend” offer by Scotia iTrade until the end of August as well as the extension of the commission-free ETF trading offer by National Bank Direct Brokerage (which we cover in depth here) until the end of October.

It’s time to put on makeup; it’s time to dress up right

Two of the major bank-owned online brokerages rolled out some cosmetic improvements to their websites recently in the hopes of making their content more accessible to investors.

The first upgrade was spotted at National Bank Direct Brokerage on their homepage and in their educational sections.   The new layout includes a video by their President, Nancy Paquet, as well as improved events listings and an improved link into their education centre.  There will be an in-depth look at the improved education centre in a follow-up posting, however the new layout of the investor education center section contains much of their existing material but in a much cleaner and user friendly presentation.

Upgrades to the investor education sections at TD Direct Investing were also recently rolled out.  The in-depth feature on this improvement (available here) showcases the improved way in which investors can now find out about and connect to investor education seminars via TD Direct Investing’s website.

With both TD Direct Investing and National Bank Direct Brokerage stepping up their investor education sections, other brokerages that currently provide substantial investor education seminars or content will likely be looking to see how they improve on their offering to try and maneuver around these developments.

Investors Trickling Back In

While it’s difficult to know exactly what retail investor is like given the recent market performance in the US, the data on trading volumes from Interactive Brokers continues to signal improved participation, at least state side.  The July figures for trading volumes at Interactive Brokers paint a mixture with trading volume increasing 13% year over year but actually declining 12% compared to June.  Margin-loan balances and customer equity showed increases on both a yearly and on a monthly basis.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – August 2013

ArchivedDealsAugust Discount Brokerage Deals Overview

The discount brokerage deals activity remains largely in a holding pattern as we move into August.  While there were a couple of noteworthy deals that expired in July, the bigger news last month was Questrade’s announcement that they would be re-introducing their unlimited trading offer.  Currently Questrade is offering the most promotions of any Canadian online brokerage however with four major promotions set to expire at the end of August and one in early September, there are plenty of opportunities for other discount brokerages to step up their promotion activity.   We’ll be watching the chatter closely this month as there are already signs certain discount brokerages are making some interesting moves to improve their existing and potential client experiences.

Expired Discount Brokerage Deals

The major deal that expired in mid-July was TD Direct Investing’s 50 Free Trade offer along with their transfer fee promotion.  Our search data shows that there is still some interest in the deal, so there is likely some appetite for this offer still out there. TD Direct Investing, however, rarely ran these kinds of deals in the past so it may be some time before something like it returns.

Extended Discount Brokerage Deals

Scotia iTrade’s Refer-a-Friend promotion has been extended to August 31st.

New Discount Brokerage Deals

Questrade announced the return of their Infinite Trading promotion which offers 3 months of commission-free trading for deposits of $50,000 or more.  For deposits between $10,000 and $24,999 they offer 1 month of commission free trading and for deposits between $25,000 and $49,999 new signups receive 2 months of commission-free trading.  This deal expires August 31st, 2013.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – July 12, 2013

In this week’s discount broker roundup, we highlight an article launch, how hard it is for discount brokers to be really, really popular and the beginning of what looks to be a busy promotional battle between discount brokerages for self-directed investors’ new business.

More commission-free ETF info

Earlier this week, part 3 of the series on commission-free ETFs was released.  In it, there were some key highlights about the commission-free ETF trading offers at Scotia iTrade and Qtrade as well as some interesting stats on the dominant provider of commission-free ETFs for the various discount brokerages. To read part 3 click here.

Don’t hate me because I’m bountiful

For many discount brokerages, keeping up with compliance is simply a cost of doing business. Failure to keep up, however, usually ends up costing more.  So it seems that Interactive Brokers has been growing a little too quickly that they let the paperwork on a few of their clients slip. The US arm of Interactive Brokers got a hard lesson in keeping up with their regulatory requirements from the National Futures Association.

While the $300K fine was a small amount for a multibillion dollar company to absorb, the bigger lesson apparently is that no publicity is bad publicity.  In the official response from Interactive Brokers, a company lawyer didn’t pass up the chance to sell the features and pricing that Interactive Brokers. The press release also contained a handily placed plug of their 2013 best online broker award win.  Well-played Interactive Brokers.

Discount Brokers Making Attractive Offers

While July is usually when barbeque grills are heating up, funnily enough discount brokerage promotions have also managed to flare up all of a sudden. On the heels of the TD Direct Investing 50 trade offer expiry, Questrade, Scotia iTrade and Disnat all launched additional offers to new or existing clients.

[nggallery id=1]

The biggest launch of discount brokerage deals came from Questrade where they announced they’re giving away iPad minis, commission-free trades, and…wait for it… magnets.  It seems like the marketing team from Questrade has launched the promotions war with some big guns.  Their 3 months of commission-free trading is certainly going to get the attention of their peers, however the innuendo-filled magnets may not be as ‘attractive’ as they think.

As part of Scotia iTrade’s roll out of their iPad app, they are offering clients one free trade (equity or options) for downloading and using the app. As was mused about earlier in the week in one of our tweets, with all of these touch screen devices now being used for trading, will the incidences of ‘fat-finger’ trades be on the rise?

Instead of playing the free commission game, Disnat is going with the ‘free information and research’ route. Disnat is offering 6 months free access to Michael Campbell’s Money Talks online resources for existing Disnat clients. At the end of the 6 months, subscriptions will cost $9.79 plus any extra charges for other site content (such as certain videos).

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – July 2013

ArchivedDeals[Updated July 2nd]

For the most part, many of July’s discount brokerage deals and promotions look to be mostly similar to last month’s offering.   First, I’ll recap of the deals that expired at the end of June and then launch into the deals that got extended and round out with the newest offerings.

Expired Deals

Three discount brokerages had their deals expire coming into July:

  • Scotia iTrade’s 100 Free Trades + Flight Desk Promotion [Now extended to September 30, 2013]
  • Disnat’s SCATE tour  promotion (and transfer fee credit that goes with it)
  • Credential Direct’s transfer fee credit promotion

TD Direct Investing’s 50 commission-free trade offer is scheduled to expire just before mid-July and we will be watching to see what, if anything, will replace it at that time.

Extended Deals

Sometimes it’s just too hard to say good-bye to a deal.  Scotia iTrade has extended the deadline for their Refer-a-Friend promotion out to July 31st  as well as their 100 Commission-Free Trade offer (extended until September 30th). Questrade has added some more time to the clock of their Advantage promotion, which offers 1 month of unlimited commission free trading, moving its expiry date out to the end of August.

Newly Added Discount Brokerage Deals

Although this is not the first time Questrade has offered 100 commission-free trades, the current 100 commission-free trade offer does make it the only Canadian discount brokerage to have a 100 commission-free trade promotion on the table makes them one of two discount brokerages (the other being Scotia iTrade) to offer 100 commission-free trades. The terms and conditions on the Questrade deal are numerous, so be sure to read and understand the requirements (especially the account funding rules) when considering this offer.  The offer is open to new accounts depositing at least $10,000.

Out of the 12 13 deals on this month’s list, Questrade and National Bank Direct Brokerage make up just over half of the offers.  Given the competitive nature of the discount brokerage business, however, it is not likely that the remaining discount brokerages will sit out of offering deals for very long.

As always, if there are any deals or promotions that you spot that you think should be featured, feel free to drop me a note here.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – June 28, 2013

It has been predictably quiet in the discount brokerage space this past week with many self-directed investors out enjoying summertime activities. Still, there are some updates on several discount brokerage promotions that are noteworthy as we head into July.  Also, there are a couple of advertising/marketing stories that might be of interest for those keeping a closer eye on the industry.

Easy Come, Easy Go

The end of June is here and with it several discount brokerages are retiring some promotions. First, the Disnat SCATE promotion will end as of June 30th.  Also slated to expire at the end of June will be the 100 free trades offer from Scotia iTrade.  For details on the discount brokerage deals, check out our deals page here.

Not all the deals and promotions originally supposed to expire at the end of June will come to an end though. It seems that Scotia iTrade and Questrade have had a change of heart about a couple of their respective promotions. Scotia iTrade’s “Refer-a-Friend” offer has been extended to July 31st 2013 and Questrade also has extended its Advantage offer out to the end of August 2013.

Baby Not on Board

Even though it is not a Canadian discount brokerage, the news that the agency famous for bringing us the E*Trade baby is moving along signals a change in the times.  Discount brokerages in the US spend hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising per year and it appears that E*Trade is making a move to lower these advertising costs.  To read more about the story, click here.

Winning the Customer Service Game

Advertising also seems like it is on the mind of HSBC InvestDirect after their recent win of the Dalbar Direct Brokerage Service Award. We got what looks like a sneak peek at a promotional video that highlights what it took for the HSBC InvestDirect team to win this year.

Discount Brokerage Fees Still Matter

Last Friday’s article in the Globe and Mail ‘A primer on low-commission’ trading by Rob Carrick provided a quick overview of many discount brokerages’ fees.  Both Virtual Brokers and Questrade stand out as low-fee choices however as we pointed out in the special series comparing these two discount brokerages to each other, the low-commission price may mask other fees, such as data or platform fees, that are required in order to fully take advantage of the low commission rates.  An individual (named “Uss”) in the comments section of the article also made an interesting observation that Interactive Brokers wasn’t part of this low-commission rate primer although their rates are just as competitive at the lowest end of equity and option commission pricing currently available. Interactive Brokers has typically not been included in the annual online broker ratings that Rob Carrick publishes because they do not offer registered accounts and it would be safe to assume that is why they were not included in this primer either.

As a reminder for next week, Canadian stock exchanges will be closed on Monday July 1st for Canada Day and U.S Markets will close early (1PM) on July 3rd and will be closed all day July 4th.

Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Canada Day and long weekend!

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – June 7th 2013

This week’s discount brokerage update features the newly announced deal by BMO InvestorLine, a couple of great forum post on the Financial Webring Forum on Qtrade vs. RBC Direct Investing  as well as another article from The Globe and Mail about Canada’s best discount broker.

Deals Getting Some Air

Unlike a lot of deals that tend to start right at the beginning of the month, BMO InvestorLine has tended to announce their new deals a few days into the start of a new month.  In keeping with their routine, this past week they BMO InvestorLine announced their latest promotion where new account openings can choose between receiving 2000 Air Miles or $250 cash back. The minimum deposit to qualify for this offer is $100,000 so it is one of the higher priced promotions currently being offered by a discount brokerage. For more details on this and other deals for June 2013, click here.

Traders Coming Back?

It looks like investor activity is starting to climb in the US which is likely the result of major indices hitting new all-time highs last month.  Overall markets appear to be shrugging off bad news and rallying on good news.  Interactive Brokers reported their daily average revenue trades (DARTs) improved from this time last year (13%) as well a slight month over month improvement (6%).

Canadian discount broker Questrade also reported improved options trading activity since they introduced multi-leg options trading.  The following screenshot of the news release hints at trading activity with Questrade having picked up. To read Questrade’s full press release regarding options trading activity, click here.

Close is Good Enough

Looking through the Financial Webring forum, this post was spotted where the user (“Amira”) was trying to decide between Qtrade and RBC Direct Investing.

One of the most interesting answers came from the user “Ockham” who basically suggested not worrying too much about picking the best discount brokerage as they are all very similar to one another:

 Another “Best Discount Brokerage”

An article in the Globe and Mail (by Gail Bebee) was published earlier this week entitled “For the DIY investor, which discount broker is best?”   This article is another in the growing list of those identifying who they think is Canada’s best discount brokerage. Ultimately Gail Bebee narrowed her top three choices down to BMO InvestorLine, RBC Direct Investing and Qtrade with her top choice being BMO InvestorLine.

Whether the results from Rob Carrick’s annual discount brokerage review will concur could make for interesting times at the champion’s podium.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – June 2013

ArchivedDeals[Updated June 12th]

With summer just around the corner, a few of Canada’s discount brokerages are going to be working a little harder this month to try and win over self-directed investors.  The recently announced earnings from several major Canadian banks indicate that they aren’t making as much money as their shareholders are expecting. As a result, getting more clients and assets will surely be on their to do list to boost their bottom lines. For consumers, they can expect much more marketing coming their way from the big banks as well as the independent discount brokerages who wish to keep pace.

While likely unrelated, the timing of the deal being offered by TD Direct Investing this month is particularly intriguing.  TD Direct Investing has typically avoided deals and promotions, especially the “free trade” variety.  So, their “50 free trade” offer launched at the end of May is somewhat of a major departure from their previous approaches to attract new clients. The end date of the free trade deal, which they can admittedly change at any time, was also curiously positioned to expire mid-July.

BMO Investorline’s cash back promo is set to expire a few days into June, so the next offer, should there be one, is what we’re looking out for over the coming month.  BMO InvestorLine has announced their latest promotion which offers new accounts the choice between $250 cash back or 2000 Air Miles when a deposit of $100,000 or more is made.  This isn’t the first time Air Miles have been offered for signing up for an InvestorLine account, however after Scotia iTrade’s “Get Educated” promo it seems that the big bank-owned discount brokerages are starting to get more creative with their promotions.

Overall, this summer could prove to be fairly interesting from a deals perspective for a number of reasons. Most importantly, there are five deals which are scheduled to expire within this month signalling that marketing teams are faced with deciding where and how to outsmart one another.  For their part, Scotia iTrade looked to using a contest (the “Get Educated” promotion) and waving around some big prize money to get the attention of existing and would be investors.  Questrade‘s Advantage promotion also expires at the end of the month – just make sure to read through and understand the terms and conditions, in particular for start dates for data packages, minimum account balance maintenance and start dates for the commission-free trading month.

Coming up with something ‘new’ isn’t nearly as easy as just extending the expiry dates of existing deals, which is exactly what a couple of discount brokerages have done.  Scotia iTrade has extended their refer-a-friend deal and Disnat has extended their 30th anniversary deal until the end of August.  Also still on the table is another offer by Disnat that was part of their SCATE tour.

We will continue to monitor the deals over the course of the month and, as always, if there are any offers you spot that you’d like to share, please drop us a note.

[Updated June 12]

National Bank Direct Brokerage has just announced a promotion on their margin accounts (for 3 months) which also includes a fixed commission rate of $6.95 per trade.  To qualify for this account, clients will have to pass a credit check as margin accounts essentially allow clients to borrow money in order to trade with greater buying power.  The discount on margin rates is definitely something different than what is being offered currently so it will be sure to attract the interest of those investors/traders who use margin as part of their strategy.
