Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – July 11, 2014

The word heading into the end of this week: Drama. This weekend it seems no matter where you look there is some source of incredible drama. An Argentinian team playing for the World Cup final in Brazil, LeBron ‘going home’ to Cleveland and rumours of Eva Mendes having Ryan Gossling’s baby – wait what?

Not to be outdone by rivalry, homecomings, and bundles of joy, Canadian discount brokerages had their fair share of news making to do. In this week’s roundup we take a look at a major commission price announcement that takes one online broker out of the shadows and back into the spotlight. Next we highlight the competition between brokerages as July deals and promotions start to show up in droves. We then take a quick look at the next trillion-dollar idea brokerages are trying to position themselves for. Of course no roundup would be complete without a healthy dose of investor commentary from the investor forums.

Don’t H8 The Player

Although they’ve been out of the spotlight for quite some time, Credential Direct stepped up their game by announcing a major commission drop and pricing structure overhaul.

Gone are the convoluted pricing tiers and the separation between ‘active’ and ‘non-active’ traders. In their place: one price, $8.88, is now applicable to all online equity trades. While it is a significant internal shift, the pricing move also is bound to generate quite a bit of buzz with other Canadian brokerages who have recently lowered their trading fees to $9.95/$9.99. Save the Dates

There’s something about calendars that have got two Canadian online brokerages inspired.

In the first instance, Questrade has just rolled out a very unique set of offers in a bid to win new clients/assets. As part of their latest promotion (among several already ongoing ones), Questrade is offering new clients the option of receiving a free trade a month for 12 (for deposits of at least $12,000) or 24 months (for deposits of $20,000 or more).

The next calendar inspired promotion is from RBC Direct Investing as part of a lead up to its 25th anniversary. Specifically RBC Direct Investing is holding a weekly giveaway of $1,000 for 12 weeks (between July 24th and October 9th) for individuals that are a part of its “community”. Paying it Forward

While many people get excited about the prospect of new bundles of joy, the conversation about the other end of the circle of life is understandably less enthusiastic – unless you happen to be a financial adviser. The notion of inheritance and passing along wealth to subsequent generations has got lots of financial institutions trying to position themselves for nearly a trillion dollar’s worth of wealth to be passed on. This past week, BMO InvestorLine released the results of a study it had commissioned on inheritance and what that might mean for individuals and their investment decisions.

More Potato Skin in the Game

In this interesting post from the Reddit Personal Finance Canada thread, a community member shares their journey of getting a Couch Potato inspired ETF portfolio set up within their RBC Direct Investing account. The other members chimed in to provide some great tips on the finer points of building a low maintenance portfolio.

Is Eight Enough? Credential Direct Drops Commission Pricing

The price war between Canadian online brokerages just got a little hotter as Credential Direct announced a major shift in its pricing structure and a substantial commission price drop.

Effective July 9th the standard commission per online equity trade at Credential Direct is $8.88. That is a significant drop from their previous standard commission price of $19 per trade and also a reduction in price from their previous ‘best price’ of $9.95. To boot, it is also strategically positions Credential Direct as a lower cost alternative to many of the $9.95 standard commission offers that are currently in play across the online brokerage space.

Drop it Like it’s Hot

The new pricing structure offered by Credential Direct is almost a complete overhaul from its predecessor.

First, the distinction between “active trader” and “standard user” has been removed. That means that all clients, regardless of trading activity level, are offered the best possible price on an online equity trade commission and online options trade.

Another major change is that all online equity trades are $8.88 regardless of the price of the stock/ETF being traded. This is especially welcome news for those who like to dabble in low dollar value shares, ‘penny stocks’ or junior companies where the size of the orders can be quite high. Under the previous commission schedule, non-active users could pay up to $250 per trade depending on the size of the order and the price of the stock.

In many ways, the new pricing plan was the result of a major shift at the beginning of the year from many of Canada’s large bank-owned brokerages. What is particularly interesting, however, is that Credential Direct didn’t just match the offers – they actually bid underneath them.

How Fortun-8

Another interesting touch was the choice to use all 8’s in the pricing. The use of then numbers seems like a clever way to add some cultural appeal to the many East Asian investors that see the number as a sign of good fortune. Given the significant footprint Credential Direct has in British Columbia the new pricing may indeed prove to be self-fulfilling.

Of course other institutions, that focus heavily on connecting with East Asian or Chinese clientele, such as HSBC InvestDirect, have incorporated the number 8 into their pricing schedules for similar reasons (and another example of a ‘fortunate’ coincidence: TD Direct Investing’s Investor Centre address in Downtown Vancouver is 888 Dunsmuir St).

The Tradeoff

While the lowering of the commission price is likely welcome news for many who actively trade, there is a tradeoff that the new pricing structure imposes: administrative fees.

Specifically, for clients who have less than $15,000 in combined assets with Credential Direct, they may be subject to a $25 per quarter administrative fee. Historically Credential Direct did not charge administrative/activity fees but it looks like they’re banking on lower commission pricing offering more competitive value. Other fees are also increasing – especially for telephone assisted trades and some administrative services. These other fees are scheduled to take effect in October of 2014.

Like a couple of other online brokerages, however, Credential Direct does offer clients who fall under the $15,000 balance threshold a couple of ways to be exempt from the administrative fee.

For those with less than $15,000 in combined assets, the first way to be exempt from the administrative fee is to make at least two commission generating trades per quarter. According to this scheme the annual cost of placing two trades per quarter at the new commission price would be $71.04 (which is cheaper than paying the $100 per year for passively holding).

The second way for clients with sub-$15,000 accounts to avoid the administrative fee is to register for a pre-authorized contribution plan of at least $100 per month. What is great about pre-authorized contribution plans is that they create a structured and scheduled way to put some money aside, so having this option is a plus for those just starting out with DIY investing.

New clients (defined as clients that have accounts that are under 6 months old) will also be exempt from the administrative charge.

The Bottom Line

For most online investors, getting a break on commission pricing is welcome news. Other brokerages – such as the bank-owned brokerages as well as (and especially) the independent brokerages have fewer reasons to smile.

The drastic overhaul of Credential Direct’s pricing model is going to make it much easier for investors to understand the commission pricing (and to afford it) – something that the marketplace is clearly communicating to the Canadian online brokerage community.

Credential Direct has been extra bold by challenging the $9.95 standard price floor established by the bank-owned brokerages earlier this year. Whether or not fortune favours their boldness remains to be seen but at the very least they’ve got some lucky numbers to help their chances.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – July 4, 2014

This past week has been filled with many reasons to look skyward. Canada Day, Independence Day, and new all-time highs on major market indices. Add to the mix that it is the beginning of a new month and that we’ve passed the halfway mark on 2014 and there are even more reasons to smile.

For Canadian discount brokerages, the new month typically brings a bit of a change to the promotions and deals, and this month is no different. We’ll take a look at these in this week’s roundup in addition to looking at trading figures and trends from a  major US online brokerage and some interesting conversations between investors in the online investing forums related to the trending markets.

Deals Cooling Down

As we mentioned in last week’s roundup, there were a number of deals and promotions poised to expire at the end of June. Although it is still early in the new month, we have seen deal action pull back slightly.

There were 4 offers that officially expired at the end of June and so July started with 15 deals. Within the first week, however, a deal from Questrade and National Bank Direct Brokerage have ended bringing the total down to 13 offers. As a quick update, it looks like the popular iPad Mini promotion from National Bank Direct Brokerage has concluded earlier than originally scheduled due to high demand. Traders Taking a Breather

With the recent spate of low market volatility and gradually rising prices, for better or worse the “excitement” in the markets has been muted. In their latest trading figures, Interactive Brokers’ reported a 4% m/m dip in the number of DARTs (Daily Average Revenue Trades) but increases in the number of customer accounts (17% yr/yr and 1% m/m) to 262,000.

A quick look at the recent 6 month trends in DARTs and average commission revenue shows that while the market (Dow Jones Industrial Average) has been trending upwards, traders may be sitting back, riding the trend and monitoring positions and ultimately sending fewer orders into the market.

The Trend has some Friends

With markets that have been trending (mostly) upwards for a few years now, the index investors have been content to allocate accordingly and mostly enjoy the ride up. It stands to reason that ETFs and in particular those that track indices have become very popular with most investors.

Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – July 2014

July is here and while sidewalks and barbeques might be sizzling, deals at Canada’s online brokerages at the outset of the month are quite a bit cooler. That said, if history is any predictor, we don’t expect that situation to persist for too long.

As was the case last month, the beginning of the month is off to a quiet start. The deals that are currently in play feature commission-free trading, cash back offers and iPad minis.

In a landscape where pricing has become so competitive, it is interesting to take note of which brokerages are more willing to ‘give’ in order to ‘get’. The mix involves both bank and credit union-owned brokerages as well as independent brokerages, however there are more of the former than the latter.

So, just who is in the deal pool this month? Thus far it is BMO InvestorLine, Desjardins Online Brokerage (Disnat), JitneyTrade, National Bank Direct Brokerage, Scotia iTrade and Questrade. Of this group, BMO InvestorLine, Questrade and Scotia iTrade have multiple offers.

New Deals

[Update: July 18, 2014]

  • National Bank Direct Brokerage has launched a new Canadian margin account promotion that offers an introductory margin rate of 2% (prime rate – 1%).   This offer is open to new and existing clients (who don’t already have a Canadian margin account). This offer is scheduled to run until August 31st 2014, see table below for more details.
  • Questrade has introduced an innovative new offer – get one commission-free trade per month for either 12 (with a $12,000 deposit), 24 months (with a $24,000 deposit) or for as long as you make a deposit of at least $1,000 per month for consecutive months (for up to 24 months). This offer is open to new and existing clients however for existing clients, funds for the new account cannot come from another Questrade account. Also, each free trade must be used in the month it is assigned to otherwise the trade expires (no carry forward or rollovers). There are no new deals as of July 1st however there were 2 deals announced mid-late June (both from Questrade) which extend past and/or expire within July. .

The first, set to expire in early July (July 3rd) is a commission-free trading offer (the Canada Day promotion). This offer is interesting because it allows clients to have 25 commission-free trades that don’t expire until the end of December 2014 (~6 months). Many commission-free trading offers are good for between 60 and 90 days.

A second promotion announced in late June by Questrade was the 3 months of unlimited trading offer for deposits of $50,000 or more. There are also unlimited trading offers for those with lower deposit amounts – see the table below for more details. Currently Questrade is the only brokerage running ‘unlimited trading’ offers.

Extended Deals

Scotia iTrade has extended two of the three deals that were set to expire at the end of June.

The first, their Refer-a-Friend offer, has been extended out until October 31st. This deal had typically been extended at one month intervals so it is interesting to note that it is now be extended for the next 3 months.

Another deal extended by Scotia iTrade is their 100 commission-free trades offer (for deposits of $15,000 or more) which has been extended until August 31st.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – June 27, 2014

We kick off this week’s discount brokerage roundup with a little investing inspiration from the beautiful game. The inspiration is not that one can stare at a screen for hours only to see nothing change (hint hint to the traders out there) but rather that when things are fiercely competitive, don’t put it past opponents to try and take a bite out of one another’s business.

In this week’s roundup we take a quick tour through the deals set to expire as we head into July. Deals and promotions are where brokerages seem to be doing the most visible kinds of competing. Education will also be another area that is of interest to brokerages and we take a look at one major player taking an interest in providing investor education to a key market. Switching gears slightly, we take a look at competition of a different variety that has definitely caught the attention of many investors lately. Finally we cap the roundup off with an interesting brokerage comparison from the forums.

Deals Going on a Staycation

For many summer is a time to gear down. What is interesting to note about the Canadian online brokerages is who is still actively offering deals and promotions throughout a typically quiet period.

A quick look at our deals and promotions section for June shows an interesting ‘cluster’ of deal providers. Notably Questrade, Scotia iTrade, National Bank Direct Brokerage, BMO InvestorLine and Disnat (or under half of all brokerages) all have advertised deals and promotions.

Of the deals currently being offered, Questrade has 7, BMO InvestorLine 4 and Scotia iTrade has 3. Looking at the expiry dates on these offers, however, all of iTrades offers are set to expire whereas only one of Questrade’s (the Amazon gift card) is. Virtual Brokers’ commission-free trade offer is also set to expire at the end of June.

It will be interesting to see what Scotia iTrade decides to do for the rest of the summer. If history is any indicator, the Refer-a-Friend is likely to be extended. Whatever the case, it’s clear to see that those brokerages that either want to or have to grow their business are not taking it easy.

All the Saving Ladies

Thanks to Beyoncé yet again for a headline inspiration. Of course it is not entirely unrelated as this past week, the world famous artist may have had her own thoughts to share on her financial future at an interesting event sponsored by TD. Specifically there was an interesting session called #YourStoryYourFuture which focused on empowerment and encouraging industry to focus on financial planning for women.

Over the past year we have noted that TD Direct Investing has offered a number of “women focused” investing education sessions and so this recent event (which is reviewed here) appears to be part of a broader strategy to connect with women investors.

All the Leaves are Green

From one big green story to another. The marijuana-themed Green Rush conference took place in Toronto this past week. Conferences such as the Green Rush are fairly unique because the sector of (legal) marijuana-related investing is so new but it also is a great example of how quickly speculative capital can mobilize itself. In both Canada and the US, investment in marijuana producing companies (or those hoping to get into the business) has been one of the hottest news stories this year. Of course with a lot of the hype comes the rampant speculation.  Check out this interesting video recap on the conference from BNN and also this link on our Facebook page from Bloomberg which provides some food for thought when considering investing in the ‘Green Rush’.

This past week was a bit quieter around the forums. An interesting comparison question did come up in the Reddit PersonalFinanceCanada thread through and it looked at comparing two bank owned Canadian discount brokerages: TD Direct Investing and CIBC Investor’s Edge. Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – June 20, 2014

It seems fitting to launch this week’s discount brokerage just ahead of the longest ‘day’ of the year. As the markets have proven yet again, the longs have it. Like the balance between day and night, however, there will inevitably be a shift. When that shift will happen, however, is anybody’s guess. For the moment, discount brokerages (north and south) are basking in sunshine, a thawing in investor attitudes towards participating in the market and hopefully not looking down.

This pre-summer solstice session of the weekly roundup features an interesting development and response to the high frequency trading stories unfolding in the US, a(nother) promotion launched by one of Canada’s independent online brokerages, news of expansion by an infrequent news maker as well as some interesting perspectives from Canadian investors on brokerages and DIY investing.

When the Market Gives You Lemons

Summertime and lemonade tend to go hand in hand. Of course, if you’re an online brokerage in the US, one of the biggest lemons that has been dealt to you has been the highly disruptive book ‘Flash Boys’ by Michael Lewis. The resulting debate on the benefits or harm that high frequency trading has (allegedly) caused for marketplace participants has quite literally put the squeeze on the stock prices of many US online brokerages.

This past week, however, as the US senate committee held proceedings investigating the practice of HFT, many online brokerages saw their stock prices rally – a sign that perhaps shorts (which had been on the rise for certain online brokerages) were starting to cover their positions.

An interesting twist in the HFT debate came via the form of an ad being run by Interactive Brokers. Specifically, Interactive Brokers’ CEO Thomas Peterffy took to the airwaves to specifically to tell clients and prospective clients that his firm ‘doesn’t trade against’ client orders. Check out the video below to see his take on why Interactive Brokers is saying “we’re one of the good guys”.

Welcome to Summer, eh?

While other brokerages are in somewhat of a holding pattern with regards to offering deals and promotions, Questrade recently launched yet another promotion aimed at acquiring new clients.

This past week, Questrade launched their ’25 free trade’ offer to coincide with the upcoming celebration Canada Day. The spin on this promotion: clients have until the end of 2014 to use the commission free trades (about 6 months). The deal is being offered to individuals making a deposit of $25,000 into a new Questrade account.

Qtrade Widens Network

In a slightly different approach to acquiring new clients, Qtrade Securities Inc decided to form a strategic partnership. Earlier this week they announced that they are working together with The Great-West Life Assurance Company and its subsidiary London Life in order to offer “to offer clients access to professional advice on securities including stocks and bonds through licensed investment advisors” as well as access to online brokerage services. Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – June 13, 2014

The Stanley Cup, the NBA Finals and the kickoff of the World Cup – between any or all of these major events it’s hard not to think about all of the fierce competition going on. Of course competition can bring out the best and sometimes the worst in the athletes. Online brokerages also know a thing or two about the heat of competition – sometimes driving innovation for the better and other times pushing things into a bit of a grey zone in the benefits department.

In this week’s roundup the Canadian online brokerage space saw a major feature release from one player. Across the border, however, this past week provided a glimpse into the darker side of innovation in the investment industry – something that is also being debated (albeit more politely) here in Canada. Of course this week wouldn’t be complete without a venture into the ongoing debate between investors from the forums.

If You Like It, Then Put a Bracket On It

Earlier this week, Questrade announced a big feature release as part of its latest set of trading platform feature upgrades. New with this release: bracket orders. For loyal readers of the roundup, we had announced the mention of this feature last month, however the official launch came this week, complete with a news release and video tour.

Active traders in particular will take note of these order types as placing conditions on an order enables (in theory) more efficient order entry planning. That said, Questrade isn’t the only brokerage that offers these features – both TD Direct Investing (on certain platforms) and Interactive Brokers also offer these. We have also caught wind of several other brokerages also actively working to implement these order types for their clients however like this competition inspired version of the roundup has shown us, clients may not want to go without for too long – especially the active trader types.

Ghost in the Machine

The US discount brokerages look like they’ve had a rough week and next week may be a little rougher. One of the bigger stories unfolding is the increasing scrutiny being placed on the brokerages for payment for order flow.

This past week, one of the largest US discount brokerages, TD Ameritrade, decided to start disclosing exactly how much of its revenue it derives from selling order flow – and the amount was a staggering $236 million from fiscal year 2013. Just who paid that amount? Mostly large high frequency trading firms/units that were able to capture incremental gains from many of those orders. TD Ameritrade wasn’t the only one to start disclosing this information though, E*trade and Schwab also revealed some of their figures related to payment for order flow.

At the heart of the discontent is not so much that brokerages made the money, but that fairness and transparency may have been compromised. Like the competitions referenced in this week’s roundup, sometimes the drive to compete crosses into a gray zone – which is where the order flow issues reside. In Canada, there is an analogous debate going on with regards to fairness for order flow – specifically known as the “order protection rule” or OPR.

Before the summer months are over, there is likely to be much more debate on both sides of the border. For retail investors, however the decisions may end up impacting how brokerages earn some of their revenues, which may in turn, impact retail trading costs.

Taking a Breather

Another interesting data point out of the US trading market also comes courtesy of TD Ameritrade – specifically in their trading volumes. Earlier this month Interactive Brokers reported their trading figures were lower for May and it looks like TD Ameritrade also pulled back about 15% month over month and about 8% year over year. While trading volumes are still strong on a relative basis, it is still interesting to wonder whether ‘complacency’ is setting in (and showing that sometimes too much of a good thing is not a good thing).

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – June 6, 2014

Another day, another new high – wait is it déjà vu all over again? Impressively, the major stock markets feel like a Jeopardy champ on a bit of a hot streak. As this past week showed, however, even winning streaks can end when you bet big and bet wrong.

Self-directed investors as well as discount brokerages north and south of the border continue to benefit from stronger markets. In this week’s roundup we look at an interesting event that may be a sign of the shift in investor focus (at least for the near term), some discount brokers that appear to be raising the stakes going into the summer with deals and additional advertising, an interesting blip on a major US discount brokerage’s performance numbers and finally we roll through the Canadian investor forums to bring you some noteworthy conversations.

Digging for Better Times

In a sign of an evolving marketplace for Canadian investors, the Canadian Investor Conference put on by Cambridge House International took place earlier in the week. This was the first ‘diversified’ sector conference which featured companies and speakers from several major sectors including mining & exploration, technology and others.

This conference replaced the World Resource Investment Conference (WRIC) which typically would have taken place in June. The recent challenges faced by the junior mining and exploration sector have been no secret and thus an entire conference dedicated to a sector of companies that appear to be reigning in spending may have been a stretch.   As its replacement, however, the Canadian Investor Conference offered something familiar but also some very interesting new features.

Among the highlights of the conference were the lineup of interesting personalities from the technology & investment space, a showcase of non-public companies working on innovative tech/green tech initiatives and scheduled meetings with company reps. The Toronto version of the Canadian Investor Conference runs from September 25th to 26th.

New month, new deals

Although June is barely out of the gates, it didn’t take too long for the deals action to start heating up again. Earlier this week, Questrade re-launched their 3 months of unlimited trading offer, perhaps as other brokerages gear down for the summer. Individuals who deposit $50,000 or more are eligible for 3 months of unlimited trading. For those who deposit between $25,000 and $49,999, they may be eligible for two months of commission-free trading and for those who deposit $1,000 to $24,999, there is one month of commission-free trading up for grabs.

June is a big month for online brokerage deals with about half of the current offers set to expire by month’s end. Given that many Canadian brokerages are in the last half of their fiscal year, there’s likely to be a stronger push to meet targets for their year-end (October 31st) which could include quite a bit of promotional activity through the summer and into the fall.

Staying Top of Mind

Given the recent run up in the markets, it’s likely (based on historical behaviours) that many retail investors might be considering stepping back into the markets (if they haven’t already done so). For that reason, online brokerages, such as National Bank Direct Brokerage, will be looking to attract the attention of investors. We spotted an interesting video ad produced for NBDB which highlights the importance of staying current and top of mind amongst the assortment of online brokerage choices.

Trading Metrics

As per the usual cycle, Interactive Brokers recently reported their trading metrics for May 2014. Although most of the numbers on a year over year basis looked better, one stat in particular dipped enough to raise an eyebrow. Interactive Brokers reported 518,000 Daily Average Revenue Trades (DARTs) for May which was 10% lower than the prior month. Given where the markets have headed, whether this was ‘sell in May and go away’ or traders just riding the trend remains to be seen. Another very interesting data point (especially for the price shoppers) is the average commission per equity trade which came in at $2.07 – far lower than almost all brokerages offer here in Canada (even with the exchange rate).

The ability to pull historical data is very valuable for active investors however different online brokerages have different windows of time that a user can actually go back and retrieve data from. While better practice is to record one’s trading activities on a regular basis (either on a spreadsheet or software or (gasp) with paper), doing so can be laborious. Discount Brokerage Deals & Promotions – June 2014

With summer just around the corner, June is an interesting month for Canadian discount brokerage deals. On the one hand, there are six offers that are scheduled to expire at the end of the month. On the other hand, history has shown that Canadian brokerages don’t like to be left out of the deals party.

In this month’s deals section, although nothing new was posted or announced at the beginning of the month from Canadian online brokers, we’ve seen a couple of interesting offers launched in mid to late May that are likely to get more attention in June.

So, while investors may be gearing down, the deals and promotions timeframes seem to suggest that Canadian discount brokerages are gearing up for a very heated summer of competition.

New Deals

[Update: July 10, 2014]

  • Editor’s Note: A representative from BMO Investorline has contacted us directly to let us know that the terms for the Select1500 and Select700 offers are being updated and that this will only be offered to select existing clients.  As such, we have removed this offer from the deals sections in which it appears.

Update June 23, 2014:

  • Questrade has launched yet another offer – this one themed around Canada Day. With this newest offer, new clients who deposit $25,000 or more into a qualifying account may be eligible to receive 25 commission free trades which can be used between now and the end of the year (about 6 months).  Be sure to read the details below and pay special attention to the deadline (July 3) if this offer is of interest.

Update June 11, 2014:

  • Questrade appears to have brought back its 3 month of free trading offer, currently no other brokerage is offering unlimited trading for this span of time. As a note, the full three months is available for deposits of $50,000 or more. Those who deposit between $25,000 and $49,999 get two months of commission-free trades and for deposits of between $1,000 and $24,999 one month of commission free trades are being offered. iPad minis made a comeback through May as two online brokerages, Questrade and National Bank Direct Brokerage, launched offers with these tablets as incentives to open an online trading account.   It is interesting to compare the two offers directly as, although the tablet being offered is the same (iPad mini 16gb wifi), the criteria to qualify and the value of the offers are very different.

In the case of National Bank Direct Brokerage’s offer, the minimum deposit required is $20,000 and the valuation on the iPad Mini is being pegged at $319.   It is noteworthy that this is the first time in recent memory that National Bank Direct Brokerage has offered up an iPad mini as an incentive to open an account.

Questrade’s iPad mini offer, by comparison, requires a minimum deposit of $100,000 and clients can elect to receive an iPad mini or $250 cash. For Questrade, this isn’t the first time they have used an iPad mini as part of their promotional mix. The iPad mini was being offered under similar terms to the current offer for quite some time however it wasn’t present through May.

Another very interesting deal was also quietly announced midway through May by BMO InvestorLine. Specifically they have launched an offer directed at younger investors (i.e. those aged 18 – 35) that offers free trades, a waiving of the minimum deposit requirement and the possibility to have minimum account balance fees waived on registered and non-registered accounts. For a number of reasons, younger investors are becoming an increasingly important demographic for online brokerages to target and this offer by BMO may result in comparable offers from other brokerages.

As history has shown, Canadian discount brokerages are not keen on standing still. So, although June might be a time when most investors are starting to take it easy, most of the brokerages will likely be working on their next wave of promotions and deals.

Extended Deals

Only one promotion saw its expiry date moved from the beginning of July out until the end of August. Questrade’s 100 commission free trades offer has now been extended to August 30th and the promo code for it has also changed.

Expired Deals

Only one deal was set to expire at the end of May and that was Questrade’s cash back offer. That deal offered either $250 cash back for a $100,000 deposit or $100 cash back for a $50,000 deposit.

Discount Brokerage Weekly Roundup – May 30 2014

Another week, another record high. It looks like not that many folks chose to sell in May and go away after all. In spite of most NHL hockey players and seasonal investors starting to take it easy, Canadian discount brokerages were still keeping busy keeping one another on their toes.

In this week’s roundup we look at a couple of online brokerage deals that are hoping to get the attention of self-directed investors with some popular toys. Also, another Canadian online brokerage announced a feature enhancement that will help show investors the money (or lack thereof). As a quick pulse of where the Canadian online brokerage industry may be headed, we take a quick peek at a merger of two US discount brokerages. An Apple a Day

Despite ponying up around $3 billion for a headphone (and streaming music) company, Apple still remains popular with consumers – which is something banks and now discount brokerages are capitalizing on.

Although Questrade was one of the first discount brokerages to offer up an iPad minis as an incentive to open an online trading account (and did so for a long time), it now seems that National Bank Direct Brokerage has also taken to a similar strategy.

Earlier this week, National Bank Direct Brokerage rolled out a new promotion offering iPad Minis for new clients who deposit at least $20,000. Interestingly, Questrade’s iPad Mini offer which had been taken down, looks to also have resurfaced. Questrade’s iPad mini offer requires a deposit of at least $100,000 and gives qualifying clients the choice of taking the iPad mini or $250 cash. Another curious point is that the value of the iPad Mini for the National Bank Direct Brokerage offer is listed as $319 whereas with Questrade it is being valued at $250.

Keeping it Realized

As commission pricing between major bank-owned online brokerages has come down, service, platform and features are the new battlegrounds to woo clients. Following their recent announcement about additional news data, earlier this week Scotia iTrade took another step towards improving customer experience by announcing the roll out of a realized gain & loss reporting feature. The new feature apparently allows clients to view their actual trading gains and losses as far back as January 2014.

Two Heads Are Better Than One

For many years, observers of the Canadian discount brokerage marketplace have observed the increasing competition for a very limited number of investors. While the fragmentation of the Canadian marketplace hasn’t really driven too much consolidation, the recent notable examples (e.g. optionsXpress Canada being acquired by Virtual Brokers) are far and few between.

In the US, however, the marketplace is also hypercompetitive and earlier this week, two Chicago-based online brokerages OptionsHouse LLC and tradeMONSTER Group Inc announced they would be joining forces. This merger comes just over 2 years after the merger of another pair of Chicago-based US brokerages – TradeKing and Zecco. While two points a trend does not make, it is nonetheless interesting to see smaller players combine to take on the incumbent brokerage houses. Whether it’s two smaller brokerages teaming up or a case of a bigger fish acquiring a smaller one, the signs from the US discount brokerages may be sending a signal of things to come here in Canada.
